Advanced Features:

Press the Mode button to access features in this order: Emissivity Display (E), Emissivity Setting (↓↑), Maximum (MAX), Minimum (MIN), Difference (dIF), Average (AVG), High Alarm Limit (HAL), Low Alarm Limit (LAL), and Probe (PRB).

Setting Alarm Points:

After selecting HAL or LAL mode, use the ▼ or ▲ button to set the alarm point. A tone and flashing alarm indicator will signal if the temperature is higher or lower than the set point (“HI” or “LOW” will appear).

Temperature Probe:

Connect a K-type thermocouple probe (sold separately) to the probe jack. Select PRB mode. The probe temperature appears in the lower right corner of the display, while the infrared sensor temperature remains in the center. The probe does not trigger high/low alarms.

Measurement Review:

After the unit shuts off, press Mode to review readings:

  • MAX: Highest recorded temperature.
  • MIN: Lowest recorded temperature.
  • dIF: Difference between MAX and MIN.
  • AVG: A weighted rolling average of readings.

Note: MAX, MIN, dIF, and AVG values reset when the trigger is pressed. AVG smooths data and excludes spikes.

Distance from Target

The thermometer measures surface temperature by sensing infrared energy from the target's spot size. The spot size increases with distance. For accuracy, the spot size should be smaller than the target area, ideally half the size for critical measurements. A spot size larger than the target can lead to inaccurate readings by including background temperatures.

Diagram Description: Object 1 is at the correct distance, with the target slightly larger than the spot size. Object 2 is too far, with the target smaller than the spot size, leading to background measurement.

Distance to Spot Size:

The TG-2000 has a nominal distance-to-spot-size (D:S) ratio of 16:1.

Diagram Description: Shows D:S=16:1 with examples: 8in @ 128in, 4in @ 64in, 2in @ 32in, and metric equivalents 0.2m @ 3.2m, 0.1m @ 1.6m, 0.05m @ 0.8m, illustrating nominal spot diameter at 90% energy.

Operation

CAUTION: LASER RADIATION—DO NOT STARE INTO BEAM. CLASS 2 LASER PRODUCT.

  1. Refer to "Typical Measurements" for specific instructions.
  2. Test the unit on an object with a known temperature. If it doesn't function as expected, replace batteries.
  3. To measure a selected area: Press and hold the trigger, point at the object. Dual lasers indicate the area diameter. "SCAN," the measured temperature, and advanced data appear. The scan icon blinks. Release the trigger; "HOLD," final temperature, and data remain for 1 minute.
  4. For multiple measurements or locating a hot spot: Press and hold the trigger, scan objects. The unit records MAX, MIN, dIF, and AVG temperatures.

Refer to "Advanced Features" in "Using the Features" for other functions.

Limitations:

  • Cannot measure through transparent objects (glass, plastic); measures surface temperature of the object itself.
  • Steam, dust, or smoke can obstruct the infrared sensor and prevent accurate measurements.

Locating a Hot Spot:

Aim the thermometer outside the area of interest and scan across with an up and down motion.

Troubleshooting

Code Problem Action

Er3 Ambient temperature is outside operating limits. Operate thermometer within specified limits.
Er5 ~ 9 Other errors. Reset thermometer by removing batteries for at least 1 minute. Reinstall and check operation.
HI Measured temperature is above range. Use thermometer within its specified range.
LO Measured temperature is below range. Use thermometer within its specified range.

Typical Measurements

Diagram Description:

  • Electronics: Shows thermometer measuring a circuit board.
  • Power Distribution: Shows thermometer measuring an electrical panel.
  • HVAC: Shows thermometer measuring an HVAC unit. Notes: Minimum line width of 25 mm (1") for accurate reading; Non-insulated line.

Emissivity

Emissivity is an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Most surfaces have an emissivity of about 0.95. Shiny metallic surfaces have lower emissivity, which can lead to inaccurate infrared thermometer readings.

CAUTION: Temperature readings are inaccurate on highly reflective objects or if emissivity is not adjusted properly. Follow masking and emissivity adjustment procedures.

Masking a Surface to Determine Emissivity:

To assess emissivity effects, cover the surface with masking tape or flat black paint (ensure it withstands anticipated temperature). These materials have an emissivity of about 0.95. Allow time for the covering to reach the material's temperature. Measure the covered area and a nearby area; readings should be similar. Differences may indicate emissivity effects.

Compensating for Emissivity:

  • If surface temperature is known, adjust emissivity until the unit agrees with the known temperature.
  • If material is known, adjust emissivity per the "Common Emissivities" table.
  • Otherwise, mask the surface, set emissivity to 0.95, measure masked and unmasked areas, and adjust emissivity until temperatures agree. Record this value for future use.
