ESL 511/518 Series Smoke Detector Installation Instructions

This document provides essential installation instructions for the ESL 511/518 Series two-wire smoke detector, designed for 24VDC fire systems. It is intended for licensed electricians and alarm installers.

Key Features

Selecting a Location

Proper placement is critical for optimal performance and to minimize false alarms. Follow guidelines from NFPA Standard 72 and local authorities. Key considerations include:

Installing the Detector

Wiring must comply with the National Electric Code (NEC) and local codes. Use 12 to 24 AWG wire.

  1. Prepare the mounting base, removing knockouts if using the detector/base lock.
  2. Remove the protective dust cover from the detector.
  3. Run system wiring and mount electrical boxes if needed.
  4. Attach the mounting base to the electrical box, wall, or ceiling using provided screws and anchors.
  5. Connect system wires to the appropriate terminals on the detector.
  6. Attach the detector to the base by aligning the tab and turning clockwise until it snaps into place.
  7. Apply power and test the detector.

Smoke Testing

Test detectors annually using simulated smoke. Direct smoke into the detector for 20 seconds or until an alarm is indicated. Ensure the smoke source is extinguished afterward. The detector LED should remain on, and an alarm should register at the control panel. Reset the detector using the system reset switch.

Sensitivity Testing

Use a test magnet on the detector's TEST letters to check sensitivity. The LED will flash 1-9 times, indicating status (e.g., normal sensitivity, not sensitive enough, too sensitive, or hardware fault). Follow table instructions for actions like cleaning or replacement.

Understanding the LED

Maintaining the Detector

These detectors require minimal maintenance when installed and used properly. Test the detector weekly. Cleaning involves wiping the cover and, if necessary, replacing the optical chamber following specific steps.

Limited Warranty

ESL, a brand of Sentrol, warrants the smoke detector against defects in material and workmanship for 3 years from the date of manufacture. This warranty covers repair or replacement without charge for defective units returned according to instructions. It excludes damage from environmental factors, abuse, misuse, or unauthorized modifications. Sentrol's liability is limited to the purchase price of the product.
