1 Control Elements

Description of the machine's components:

2 For Your Safety

Comply with the Instructions for Use

Read these instructions thoroughly before use and keep them accessible for future users. Failure to comply may result in serious injury or property damage.

Proper Use

This machine is intended for coffee preparation and heating water by specialist or trained staff in commercial environments, or by non-professionals. Any other use is considered improper.

User Limitations

Individuals, including children, lacking the physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or the experience/knowledge to use the machine safely, must be supervised by a responsible person or receive proper instruction.

When using a CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge or JURA Connector, wireless connections are established. Details on frequency band and transmission power are in the '11 Technical Data' section.

Use by Children

Children must understand potential dangers from incorrect use:

What to Do in the Event of Damage

Never use a damaged machine or mains cable. This could result in fatal electric shock.

Preventing Damage

To avoid damage to the machine and mains cable:

Danger of Electric Shock

Water conducts electricity. Keep water and electricity separate:

Danger of Burns, Scalding and Injury

3 Preparing and Using for the First Time

Setting Up the Machine

Filling the Bean Container

The aroma preservation cover of the bean container is lockable (spanner supplied).

CAUTION: Coffee beans treated with additives (e.g., sugar), ground coffee, or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.

Determining the Water Hardness

Set the water hardness when using the machine for the first time. If you know your water hardness, proceed to the next section. Otherwise:

The test strip shows color indicators for different hardness levels: e.g., <3°dH / <3.75°e / <5.4°f (soft), >4°dH / >5°e / >7.2°f (medium), >8.4°dH / >10.5°e / >15.1°f (hard), >14°dH / >17.5°e / >25.2°f (very hard).

First-Time Use

WARNING: Operating the machine with a defective mains cable poses a risk of fatal electric shock.

Precondition: The bean container has been filled.

7 Maintenance

Basic Information About Maintenance

Rinsing the Machine

You can start coffee system rinsing manually at any time.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

Inserting/Changing the Filter

The W4 will prompt you to change the filter when it stops working (depending on water hardness). Using a CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge eliminates the need for descaling.

CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridges are available from specialized dealers.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed (or the filter symbol [filter-symbol] is red in the cockpit if the filter capacity is exhausted).

Cleaning the Machine

The W4 prompts you to clean it after 180 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses.

CAUTION: Using the wrong cleaning agent can damage the machine or leave residues in the water. Use only original JURA maintenance products.

The cleaning programme lasts approximately 20 minutes. Do not interrupt it, as this will impair cleaning quality. JURA cleaning tablets are available from specialized dealers.

Precondition: 'Clean' is displayed in the Cockpit.

Descaling the Machine

The W4 builds up limescale deposits over time and prompts you to descale when necessary, depending on water hardness. If using a CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge, descaling prompts will be bypassed.

CAUTION: If descaling agent contacts skin or eyes, it can cause irritation. Avoid contact. Rinse affected areas with clean water. Seek medical attention if it contacts eyes.

CAUTION: Using the wrong descaling agent can damage the machine or leave residues in the water. Use only original JURA maintenance products.

CAUTION: Interrupting the descaling operation may damage the machine. Allow the programme to run to completion.

CAUTION: Descaling agent may damage sensitive surfaces (e.g., marble). Clean up any splashes immediately.

The descaling programme lasts approximately 20 minutes. JURA descaling tablets are available from specialized dealers.

Precondition: 'Descale' is displayed in the Cockpit.

If the descaling operation stops unexpectedly, rinse the water tank thoroughly.

Descaling the Water Tank

Limescale deposits can form in the water tank. Descale it periodically for correct machine function.

Cleaning the Bean Container

Coffee beans can leave an oily film on the container walls, affecting coffee results. Clean the bean container periodically.

Precondition: 'Fill bean container' is displayed.

8 Display Messages

Messages on the Start Screen

Message Cause/Result Action
'Fill water tank' The water tank is empty. No products can be prepared. Fill the water tank (see Chapter 5 'Daily operation – Filling the water tank').
'Empty grounds' / 'Empty drip tray' The coffee grounds container or drip tray is full. No products can be prepared. Empty the coffee grounds container and drip tray (see Chapter 5 'Daily operation – Maintenance actions').
'Drip tray not fitted' The drip tray is not inserted correctly or not at all. No products can be prepared. Fit the drip tray.
'Fill bean container' The bean container is empty. Speciality coffees cannot be prepared, but hot water and milk can. Fill the bean container (see Chapter 3 'Preparing and using for the first time – Filling the bean container').
'Too hot' The system is too hot to start a maintenance programme. Wait several minutes for the system to cool, or prepare a speciality coffee or hot water.

Messages in the Cockpit

If a maintenance programme is pending, it is indicated by an additional red circle [alert-symbol] on the start screen.

Message Cause/Result Action
The filter symbol [filter-symbol] lights up red. The filter cartridge is used up. Replace the CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge (see Chapter 7 'Maintenance – Inserting/changing the filter').
'Clean' The W4 is prompting you to clean it. Perform cleaning (see Chapter 7 'Maintenance – Cleaning the machine').
'Descale' The W4 is prompting you to descale it. Perform descaling (see Chapter 7 'Maintenance – Descaling the machine').

9 Troubleshooting

Problem Cause/Result Action
Coffee only comes out in drips when being prepared. The coffee is ground too finely and obstructs the system. The water hardness may not have been correctly set. Set the grinder to a coarser setting (see Chapter 4 'Preparation - Adjusting the grinder'). Perform descaling (see Chapter 7 'Maintenance - Descaling the machine').
Dry ground coffee behind the coffee grounds container. The beans used result in an above-average volume of ground coffee. Reduce coffee strength or choose a finer grinder setting (see Chapter 4 'Preparation - Adjusting the product settings').
Grinder is making a very loud noise. Foreign objects in the grinder. Contact customer support (see Chapter '13 JURA contact details / Legal information').
'ERROR 2' or 'ERROR 5' is displayed. If the machine was exposed to cold for a long period, heating may be disabled for safety reasons. Warm the machine at room temperature.
Other 'ERROR' messages are displayed. Contact customer support (see Chapter '13 JURA contact details / Legal information').

If you cannot solve the problem, contact customer support (see Chapter '13 JURA contact details / Legal information').

10 Transport and Environmentally Friendly Disposal

Transport / Emptying the System

Keep the original packaging for transport. To protect the W4 from frost during transport, the system must be emptied.

Precondition: The start screen is displayed.

Disposal

Dispose of old machines in an environmentally neutral way. Old machines contain recyclable materials. Please use suitable collection systems for disposal.
