2 For Your Safety
Comply with the Instructions for Use
Read these instructions thoroughly before use and keep them accessible for future users. Failure to comply may result in serious injury or property damage.
- WARNING: Indicates circumstances that may result in serious injuries or death.
- CAUTION: Indicates circumstances that may result in minor injuries.
- CAUTION: Indicates circumstances that may result in damage to property.
Proper Use
This machine is intended for coffee preparation and heating water by specialist or trained staff in commercial environments, or by non-professionals. Any other use is considered improper.
User Limitations
Individuals, including children, lacking the physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or the experience/knowledge to use the machine safely, must be supervised by a responsible person or receive proper instruction.
When using a CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge or JURA Connector, wireless connections are established. Details on frequency band and transmission power are in the '11 Technical Data' section.
Use by Children
Children must understand potential dangers from incorrect use:
- Keep children under 8 away from the machine or supervise them constantly.
- Children aged 8 and over may operate the machine unsupervised only if instructed on safe usage.
- Children must not clean or service the machine unless supervised.
- Do not allow children to play with the machine.
What to Do in the Event of Damage
Never use a damaged machine or mains cable. This could result in fatal electric shock.
- If damage is apparent, disconnect the machine from the mains by switching it off with the On/Off button [power-symbol] and then removing the plug.
- Replace a damaged plug-in mains cable only with an original JURA cable. Unsuitable cables may cause consequential damage.
- Only authorized JURA service centers should repair the machine or its permanently connected mains cable. Improper repairs may result in consequential damage.
Preventing Damage
To avoid damage to the machine and mains cable:
- Do not place the W4 in a cabinet when in use.
- Keep the W4 and mains cable away from hot surfaces.
- Ensure the mains cable does not rub against sharp edges or become trapped.
- Never let the mains cable hang loosely, as it could be a tripping hazard or become damaged.
- Protect the W4 from weather and direct sunlight.
- Connect the W4 only to the mains voltage stated on the rating plate (located on the underside).
- Connect directly to a domestic power socket; multi-socket adapters or extension cords may cause overheating.
- The heating element and outer enclosure remain hot after use.
- Do not use alkaline or alcohol-based cleaning agents; use only mild agents and a soft cloth.
- Do not use coffee beans treated with additives or caramelised coffee beans.
- Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold, non-carbonated water.
- Switch off the machine using the On/Off button [power-symbol] and remove the plug if you will be absent for an extended period.
- Only use original JURA maintenance products. Using unrecommended products could damage your W4.
Danger of Electric Shock
Water conducts electricity. Keep water and electricity separate:
- Never touch the mains plug with wet hands.
- Do not immerse the W4 or mains cable in water.
- Do not put the W4 or any parts in the dishwasher.
- Before cleaning, switch off the W4 using the On/Off button [power-symbol]. Wipe with a damp cloth, not a wet one, and protect from water splashes. Do not clean with a water jet.
- The W4 is not suitable for installation where a water jet can be used.
Danger of Burns, Scalding and Injury
- Do not touch the spouts during operation; use the handles provided.
- If operating remotely via mobile devices, ensure others are not put at risk from hot spouts during product preparation or maintenance.
3 Preparing and Using for the First Time
Setting Up the Machine
- Choose a spot that protects the machine from overheating, ensuring ventilation slots are not covered.
- Place the W4 on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water (minimum height of 80 cm).
Filling the Bean Container
The aroma preservation cover of the bean container is lockable (spanner supplied).
CAUTION: Coffee beans treated with additives (e.g., sugar), ground coffee, or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.
- Only use roasted, untreated coffee beans.
- Remove the aroma preservation cover.
- Fill the bean container with coffee beans and close the cover.
Determining the Water Hardness
Set the water hardness when using the machine for the first time. If you know your water hardness, proceed to the next section. Otherwise:
- Hold the supplied Aquadur® test strip under running water for one second. Shake off excess water.
- Wait approximately 1 minute.
- Read the water hardness from the discolouration of the test strip and the packaging description.
The test strip shows color indicators for different hardness levels: e.g., <3°dH / <3.75°e / <5.4°f (soft), >4°dH / >5°e / >7.2°f (medium), >8.4°dH / >10.5°e / >15.1°f (hard), >14°dH / >17.5°e / >25.2°f (very hard).
First-Time Use
WARNING: Operating the machine with a defective mains cable poses a risk of fatal electric shock.
- Never use a damaged machine or one with a defective mains cable.
- CAUTION: Milk, sparkling mineral water, or other liquids can damage the water tank or machine. Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water.
Precondition: The bean container has been filled.
- For machines with a plug-in mains cable: Connect the cable to the machine.
- Insert the mains plug into a power socket.
- Press the On/Off button [power-symbol] to switch the W4 on.
- Language Selection: Press the [arrow-left] or [arrow-right] button until the desired language (e.g., 'English') is displayed. Press the 'Save' button.
- Water Hardness: Refer to the section above for determining water hardness. Press the [arrow-left] or [arrow-right] button to change the setting. Press the 'Save' button.
- Filter Operation / Insert Filter: Remove and rinse the water tank with cold water. Open the filter holder. Insert the CLARIS Pro Smart+ filter cartridge into the water tank with slight pressure. Close the filter holder (it will click audibly). Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert it. The machine automatically detects the new filter.
- Switch Operation: Turn the switch to the [open-switch-symbol] position. The machine will display 'Filter is being rinsed', and water will flow from the hot-water spout. Turn the switch to the [close-switch-symbol] position. The machine will display 'System is filling', and water will flow from the hot-water spout. Other messages include 'Machine is heating' and 'Machine is rinsing' (water flows from the coffee spout). The start screen will then be displayed, indicating the W4 is ready for use.
