Installation Instructions for the HLD Series Hydrogen Leak Detector
Document Number: 3017-2236, Issue 2
1.0 General Information
The Honeywell Hydrogen Leak Detector is a thermal conductivity-based hydrogen gas sensor offering high reliability, stability, and resistance to chemical poisoning. It is designed for detecting hydrogen leakage in various applications.
2.0 Use of the Hydrogen Leak Detector Sensor
The Honeywell Hydrogen Leak Detector is designed to provide ppm-level hydrogen gas readings in a clean air environment with high accuracy across a wide range of temperatures and humidity.
3.0 Calibration/Compensation
The Hydrogen Leak Detector is calibrated for H₂ sensitivity over temperature. On-board temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors are used to compensate/correct the sensor output for environmental changes. These measurements are also available via the CANbus message.
4.0 Installation
Mount the sensor using two mounting bushings and two grade 8.8 M6 bolts. The mounting tabs accommodate various bolt head styles. Torque mounting bolts to 8 Nm ±2 Nm.
The sensor should be mounted with the gas entry port pointed downwards to prevent water pooling on the gas membrane or dust collection. If downward orientation is impossible, position the sensor on its side to minimize water or dust collection on the membrane.
5.0 Sensor Diagnostics
The sensor provides diagnostic information, including:
- Voltage Outside Operating Range (High/Low)
- H₂ Sensor Error
- Temperature Outside Operating Range (High/Low)
- Humidity High Error
- Pressure Outside Operating Range (High/Low)

Faults are reported immediately when triggered using DM1. Faults shall report every 1 second while active. Once all faults are removed/recovered, sensors stop transmitting the DM1 message.
6.2 Fault Messages
DM1 (J1939-73 Standard)
The DM1 message reports error characteristics: Severity, Light, Flash, and FMI are used to describe the error. The DTC identifies the exact error, and occurrence reports how many times it has occurred.

8.0 Additional Sensor Installation Notes
- A. Orientation: While the H₂ sensor is not sensitive to orientation, the gas port should be pointed downwards to prevent fluid pooling on the membrane. Orienting the gas port on its side is an alternative to prevent fluid/debris collection on the gas port surface.
- B. CAN Bus: 120 Ohm termination resistors are required on both ends of the CAN Bus.
- C. Flame Suppressor: The sensor is assembled with a Flame Suppressor, intended to contain any internally generated flame/explosion and will not initiate a flame/explosion in surrounding ambient environments.
- D. Damage: Opening the device or damaging the flame suppressor will eliminate the flame containment performance of this sensor.
- E. Chemical Contact: The H₂ gas sensor is highly sensitive. Avoid close contact with volatile chemicals such as solvents, ketones (acetone), aldehydes (formaldehyde), alcohols (ethanol, methanol, isopropanol), and aromatic compounds (toluene), glycol esters.
- F. Chemical Sources: These chemicals are often components of epoxies, glues, and adhesives, which can outgas during baking/curing.
- G. Acid Exposure: Minimize or avoid exposure to acids like Hydrochloric, Sulfuric, and Nitric.
- H. Other Chemical Contact: Minimize or avoid contact with Ketenes, Ammonia (NH₃), Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂), and Ozone (O₃).
- I. Temperature Range: The H₂ sensor has been evaluated for a service temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.
- J. Repairability: H₂ sensors are not repairable. Faulty products should be returned to the manufacturer via the RMA process.
- K. Ambient Air Composition: The H₂ sensor is configured to work in ambient air. Nominal ambient air composition includes: Nitrogen (78.084%), O₂ (20.946%), Argon (0.0934%), Carbon Dioxide (0.036%).
- L. Composition Deviation: Sensor output will be affected if the ambient air composition deviates from its nominal composition.
