Nuki Opener: Connecting to Unknown Intercom Systems
This guide provides instructions for connecting the Nuki Opener to intercom systems not listed in the Nuki compatibility check. Please note that connecting to unknown intercoms is at your own risk.
What is an Unknown Intercom?
Unknown intercoms are systems not verified on the Nuki website (nuki.io/en/opener/).
Warning: Proceed at your own risk. The following guidelines are general. Nuki Home Solutions GmbH has not tested the Nuki Opener with your specific intercom system or cabling.
Do I Have an Analogue or Bus Intercom?
Analogue systems typically have multiple wires, while bus systems are digital and usually have two wires. The Nuki Opener interacts with them differently:
- Analogue systems: Actuated by shortening contacts.
- Bus systems: Actuated by replaying recorded signals. They require a recording phase during initial setup or when 'Configure Opener' is selected.
- Mixed systems: Partially analogue and partially bus-based. These can only be connected as "other doors".
Analogue Intercoms
- Select "Intercom" in the Nuki App.
- Choose "Generic" as the Brand and "Analogue" as the Model.
- Follow the mounting instructions and connect the cables according to the wiring diagram.
Basic Setup Wiring Diagram:
Opener Cable | Intercom Connection | Color Indicator |
---|---|---|
Yellow cable | RING | ● |
Blue cable | OPEN | ● |
Purple cable | GND (Ground) | ● |
Black cable | GND (Ground) - optional | ● |
Red cable | LOUDSPEAKER - optional | ● |
Orange cable | MICROPHONE - optional | ● |
Enhanced Setup with Doorbell Suppression Wiring Diagram:
Opener Cable | Intercom Connection | Color Indicator |
---|---|---|
Green cable | RING | ● |
Blue cable | OPEN | ● |
Purple cable | GND (Ground) | ● |
Black cable | GND (Ground) - optional | ● |
Red cable | LOUDSPEAKER - optional | ● |
Orange cable | MICROPHONE - optional | ● |
Yellow cable | NUKI clamp (1st port) | ● |
Disconnect the RING wire from the intercom and connect it to the NUKI CLAMP (2nd port).
It is recommended to start with the basic setup and then move to the enhanced setup once the basic setup is functional.
Configuration Failed: If the function test fails (door not opening or ring signal not detected), your intercom may not be compatible. Check the installation, re-configure, or contact Nuki support. You can also try configuring it as an "other door" by connecting directly to the intercom's opening button.
Successful Configuration: If everything works, email contact@nuki.io with your intercom's name and a picture of your wiring.
Bus Intercoms
- Select "Intercom" in the Nuki App.
- Choose "Generic" as the Brand and "Bus" as the Model. If your intercom is listed, you can select it directly.
Supported Bus Systems:
Model | BUS System |
---|---|
BUS (Generic) | Generic digital bus. Nuki Opener attempts automatic parameter identification. |
BUS (Twinbus) | Ritto Twinbus |
BUS (Qwikbus) | STR Qwikbus |
BUS (Bticino) | Bticino 2-Wire BUS system, Legrand |
BUS (Siedle) | Siedle In-Home-BUS |
BUS (Koch) | Koch |
Basic Setup Wiring Diagram:
Opener Cable | Intercom Connection | Color Indicator |
---|---|---|
Black cable | BUS- | ● |
Red cable | BUS+ | ● |
Orange cable | BUS+ - optional | ● |
Enhanced Setup with Doorbell Suppression Wiring Diagram:
Opener Cable | Intercom Connection | Color Indicator |
---|---|---|
Black cable | BUS- | ● |
Red cable | NUKI clamp (1st port) | ● |
Green cable | BUS+ | ● |
Orange cable | BUS+ - optional | ● |
Yellow cable | NUKI clamp (1st port) | ● |
Disconnect the BUS+ wire from the intercom and connect it to the NUKI CLAMP (2nd port).
It is recommended to start with the basic setup and then move to the enhanced setup once the basic setup is functional.
Non-standard Cabling Error: If the Nuki App indicates a non-standard system, the bus signal polarity might be incorrect. Try swapping the BUS+ and BUS- connections. Continue with the installation.
Error during configuration: Similar to analogue systems, this indicates incompatibility or a mounting error. Try re-configuring or connecting as an "other door".
Successful Configuration: Email contact@nuki.io with your intercom's name and a picture of your wiring.
„Other Door”
In this mode, the Nuki Opener shortcuts a contact to open the door. Ring detection and doorbell suppression are not available. Default settings, such as Auto Unlock, differ from supported intercoms.
- Select "Other door" in the Nuki App.
- Follow the mounting instructions and connect the purple and blue cables to your intercom's opening button.
- Complete the installation in the Nuki App.
Annex 1 - Cable Naming & Schematics
Cable Color | Function |
---|---|
Black cable | GND_AUDIO / GND_BUS |
Red cable | AUDIO_IN (Loudspeaker) / BUS |
Orange cable | AUDIO_OUT (Microphone) |
Yellow cable | RING_DETECT_INPUT |
Green cable | RING_DETECT_OUTPUT. Normally closed relay between RING_DETECT_INPUT and RING_DETECT_OUTPUT (max. 500mA, 50V), used for doorbell suppression with Nuki clamp. |
Blue cable | OPEN |
Purple cable | GND_2. Normally open relay between OPEN and GND_2 (max. 2A, 50V). GND_2 must be the same GND as GND_AUDIO. Opener does not support different ground levels. |
