Chapter 1: Unpacking and Parts Identification
Carefully unpack the instrument and accessories from the shipping container. Check the individual parts against the list of components below. If anything is missing or damaged, notify TSI Incorporated immediately.
- Carrying case
- Instrument
- USB cable
Chapter 2: Setting-up
Supplying Power
The TSI Model 9545/9545-A VelociCalc Air Velocity Meter is powered by four size AA batteries.
Installing the Batteries
Insert four AA batteries as indicated by the diagram located on the inside of the battery compartment. The instrument operates with either alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries, but it will not recharge NiMH batteries. Battery life is shorter with NiMH batteries. Carbon-zinc batteries are not recommended due to the risk of acid leakage.
Using the Optional AC Adapter
When using the AC adapter, the batteries (if installed) are bypassed. Ensure the correct voltage and frequency, as marked on the adapter, are used. The AC adapter does not recharge the batteries.
Using the Telescoping Probe
The telescoping probe contains the velocity, temperature, and humidity sensors. Ensure the sensor window is fully exposed and the orientation dimple is facing upstream during use.
NOTICE: For temperature measurements, ensure at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) of the probe is in the flow to allow the temperature sensor to be in the air stream.
Extending the Probe
To extend the probe, hold the handle in one hand and pull the probe tip with the other. Do not hold the cable while extending, as this can prevent proper extension.
Retracting the Probe
To retract the probe, hold the handle in one hand and gently pull the probe cable with the other.
Connecting to a Computer
Use the provided Computer Interface USB Cable to connect the Model 9545/9545-A to a computer for downloading stored data. Refer to Chapter 3, "LogDat2 Downloading Software," for detailed instructions.
CAUTION: A symbol (indicating a prohibition for network connection) signifies that the data port of the Model 9545/9545-A is NOT intended for connection to a public telecommunications network. Connect the USB data port only to another USB port.
Chapter 3: Operation
Keypad Functions
- ON/OFF Key: Powers the Model 9545/9545-A on and off. The power-up sequence displays Model Number, Serial Number, Software Revision, and Last Date Calibrated.
- Arrow (⬆️⬇️) Keys: Scroll through choices when setting a parameter.
- ← (Enter) Key: Accepts a value or condition.
- Arrow (⬅️➡️) and Menu Soft Keys: Change choices when setting a parameter. The Menu soft key selects menu options like Display Setup, Settings, Flow Setup, Actual/Std Setup, Data Logging, and Calibration.
Common Terms
- Sample: Consists of all measurement parameters stored simultaneously.
- Test ID: A group of samples. Statistics (average, minimum, maximum, count) are calculated per Test ID. Maximum 100 Test IDs.
- Time Constant: An averaging period used to dampen display fluctuations. A longer time constant smooths readings in fluctuating flows. The display updates every second, showing the average over the last time constant period (e.g., 10 seconds). This is also known as a "moving average".
Menus
DISPLAY SETUP
Configure desired parameters for the running screen. Use ON/OFF soft keys to show/hide parameters. The PRIMARY soft key displays one parameter in a larger format. One primary and up to two secondary parameters can be selected.
SETTINGS
Set general parameters including Language, Beeper, Units, Time Constant, Contrast, Time, Date, Time Format, Date Format, Number Format, Backlight, and Auto Off. Use ⬅️ or ➡️ soft keys to navigate options and ← to accept.
FLOW SET UP
Select from four flow types: Round Duct, Rectangle Duct, Duct Area, and Horn. Use ⬅️ or ➡️ soft keys to cycle through types and ← to accept. Highlight "Enter Settings" and press ← to change values.
NOTICE: Horn numbers correspond to horn models (e.g., AM 100). Compatible horn models include AM 100, AM 300, AM 600, and AM 1200. Selecting a horn model enables the instrument to use a preprogrammed curve for flow rate calculation from velocity.
ACTUAL/STANDARD SETUP
Choose between Actual/Standard measurements. Select Standard Temperature, Standard Pressure, and the source for actual temperature. Barometric pressure must be entered for converting air velocity and volume measurements to actual conditions.
DATA LOGGING
Measurements
Logged measurements are independent of displayed ones and must be selected under DATA LOGGING → Measurements.
Log Mode/Log Settings
Log Mode options: Manual, Auto-save, or Cont-key.
- Manual: Data is not saved automatically; prompts user to save samples.
- Auto-save: User manually takes samples, which are logged automatically.
- Cont-key: Starts readings and logging with the ⬅️ key; continues until ⬅️ is pressed again.
Auto-save and Cont-Key modes offer additional Log Settings:
Mode | Log Settings |
---|---|
Auto-save | Log Interval |
Cont-key | Log Interval |
Pressing ⬆️⬇️ simultaneously locks the keypad. Pressing them again unlocks it.
Delete Data
Use to delete all data, tests, or samples.
% Memory
Displays available memory. "Delete All" under Delete Data clears memory.
LogDat2 Downloading Software
Download LogDat2 software from the TSI Software and Firmware Wizard page. Install by running the application file and following on-screen instructions.
To download data, connect the Model 9545/9545-A to a computer via USB cable. Run the LogDat2 software and select tests for download or double-click a test to open it.
Chapter 4: Maintenance
The Model 9545/9545-A requires minimal maintenance.
Recalibration
For optimal accuracy, TSI recommends annual recalibration. Contact TSI offices or a local distributor for service arrangements and a "Service Request" number. An online "Service Request" form is available at tsi.com/service.
