1. What's in the box?

2. Camera Overview
The VANTRUE OnDash X1 dash cam features the following components:

LED Indicator Status:
- Blue LED solid on: Camera is on, but not recording.
- Blue LED blinks: Camera is recording videos.
- Red LED solid on: Camera is being charged.
- Red LED blinks fast: Camera is nearly full charged.
- Blue LED solid on, red LED solid on: Camera is on but not recording, and is being charged.
- Blue LED blinks, red LED solid on: Camera is being charged and is recording videos.
Screen Overview:
The screen displays various indicators including:
- Recording standby status / Recording
- Video resolution (e.g., 1080FHD)
- Recording time
- Emergency file lock [key-icon]
- Snapshot
- Loop recording time
- Microphone status (ON/OFF)
- Parking mode status
- GPS signal status (connecting/connected)
- HDR status (ON)
- G-Sensor status (ON)
- Memory card status (inserted or not)
- Date stamp
- Time stamp
- Battery level (charging status)
3. Getting started
3.1. Before using, charge the camera for 2-3 hours.
A. Charge via your USB charger
Connect the camera to a power bank or USB charger using the provided USB cable.
B. Charge via the car charger
Insert the car charger into your vehicle's cigarette lighter port and connect the USB cable to the camera.
Note: While charging, the LED indicator light is blinking red.
Notes:
- The device has two ports available for charging: the USB port on the camera and the USB port on the suction cup mount.
- When charging via a computer, use the USB port on the mount. Using the camera's port may cause it to enter "Mass Storage" mode, preventing operation.
3.2 Installing memory card
Use a genuine microSD memory card from 8GB to 32GB with a speed rating of Class 10 or higher. Insert the memory card into the camera's card slot until it clicks. To remove, turn off the camera, then push the card in until it clicks out.
Before first use, format the card: Navigate to MENU > System Setup > Format, then select YES.
Note: For 64GB cards, format to FAT32 on a computer first.
Important Notes:
- Format the microSD card every 2 weeks to maximize its lifespan.
- Do not remove the card while the camera is recording to prevent data loss.
3.3 Installing the camera onto your windshield
- Connect the suction mount to the camera's mounting socket until it clicks.
- Clean the windshield with water or alcohol and wipe dry.
- Clean the suction mounting pad on the camera mount.
- Attach the suction mount to the windshield and rotate the locking bar upward 90 degrees until it clicks to secure the camera.
- Route the power cable around the trim of your vehicle.
- Plug the mini USB connector of the cable into the USB port on the suction cup mount's locking bar.
- Insert the car charger into your vehicle's cigarette lighter port.
- Start the car; the camera will automatically turn on and start recording.
4. Basic Operation
4.1 Power on/off the camera
A. Manually
Press the [power-button] once to turn on the camera. Press and hold the [power-button] to power it off.
B. Automatically
When connected to the car charger and the car is started, the camera will automatically turn on and begin charging. It will auto-turn off 30 seconds after the car is shut off.
4.2 Settings in the menu
After powering on, press the [menu-button] to enter the setup menus. If the camera is recording, press the [ok-button] to stop recording first, then press the [menu-button].
A. Record setup
Navigate to Record Setup using the [down-button] and [up-button] to select items:
- Resolution: Default is 1920x1080P30fps. Options: 1920x1080P30, 1280x720P30.
- Loop Recording: Default is 5 mins per clip. Options: 1 min, 3 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins.
- Parking monitor: Default is OFF. Press [ok-button] and [down-button] to turn ON/OFF.
- G-Sensor Set: Default is Medium. Options: OFF, Low, Medium, High.
- HDR: Default is ON. Press [ok-button] and [down-button] to turn OFF/ON.
- Mic: Default is ON. Press [ok-button] and [down-button] to turn OFF/ON.
- Stamp: Default is ON. Press [ok-button] to turn on/off date/time, logo, car number, and GPS stamps.
B. System setup
- Language: Default is English. Options: English, Chinese, German, Japanese.
- Time Setup: Use [up-button]/[down-button] and [ok-button] to set date and time.
- Car Number Setup: Use [up-button]/[down-button] and [ok-button] to set car number.
- Auto LCD Off: Default is 3 MIN. Turns off the screen after 3 minutes of inactivity while recording. Options: 30 Secs, 1 Mins, 3 Mins, OFF.
- Power Off Delay: Default is 30 secs. Auto ends recording and powers off after 30 seconds when the car is shut off. Options: 30 sec, 1 min, 3 min, OFF.
- Non-use Auto Power OFF: Default is 3 MIN. Auto powers off after 3 minutes of inactivity. Options: 1 min, 3 min, OFF.
- Key Sound: Default is ON. Enable or disable button sounds.
- Flicker Frequency: Default is 50Hz. Options: 50Hz, 60Hz.
- TV Standard: Default is NTSC. Options: NTSC/PAL.
- Format: Formats the microSD card. All data will be lost.
- Default Setting: Resets the device to factory settings.
- Firmware Version: Displays the current firmware version.
C. GPS setup
Note: Requires a separate VANTRUE GPS receiver mount.
- GPS Setup: Default is Off. Turn ON/OFF.
- GPS Time Calibration: Default is OFF. When ON, syncs system time to GMT.
- GMT Setup: Default is 0. Select your local time zone (-11 to 12).
- Speed Unit: Default is MPH. Options: MPH, KM/H.
D. Files
View and delete videos/images in Normal/Event folders.
- Normal: Stores normal recording videos and images.
- Event: Stores event videos (detected by G-Sensor and manually locked).
4.3 Date/Time setting
Navigate to MENU > System Setup > Time Setup. Use [up-button]/[down-button] to select date/time values and [ok-button] to confirm and move to the next field. Press [menu-button] to exit.
4.4 Loop recording
After inserting the memory card and powering on, the camera starts loop recording by default. If not connected to power, press the [ok-button] to start recording manually.
While recording, the blue LED blinks, and a red dot flashes on the top left of the screen. Press the [ok-button] to stop/start recording.
The default loop recording time is 5 minutes. This can be changed in "Record Setup" > "Loop Recording" (1 min, 3 mins, 5 mins, or 10 mins). If the card is full, old videos will be overwritten.
Video files are named "Year_Date_Time_Serial" (e.g., "2017_0101_060101_001") and stored in the "Video" > "Normal" folder.
4.5 Event recording
Event detection is triggered by the G-Sensor. It automatically detects collisions, locks the current loop recording clip, and saves it to the Event folder, preventing it from being overwritten.
G-Sensor sensitivity is adjustable (Low, Medium, High, or Off) via "Record Setup" > "G-Sensor Set".
You can also manually lock a video by pressing the [emergency-button] while recording. A [key-icon] will appear on the screen.
Event videos are stored in the “Video” > “Event” folder and are not overwritten.
4.6 Voice recording
Voice recording is ON by default. To turn it OFF:
- Go to "Record Setup" > "MIC" and select OFF.
- While recording, press the [up-button] to turn voice recording OFF/ON.
When voice recording is OFF, the Mic icon will appear white with a red line across it.
4.7 Parking mode
To use parking mode, go to "Record Setup" > "Parking Monitor" and select ON.
Parking mode is triggered by motion detection. After activation, the camera switches to parking mode if no movement is detected for 5 minutes while recording. The parking mode icon [parking-mode-icon] will appear on the left side of the screen.
In Parking Mode, the camera starts recording when it detects movement and stops 10 seconds after movement ceases.
You can also manually activate Parking Mode by pressing and holding the [down-button] until the 'P' icon appears.
Note: To ensure continuous operation in parking mode, power the camera with an external power bank or hardwire it to the car battery. Avoid running it continuously for over 10 hours.
4.8 Taking a picture
When the camera is not recording videos, press the [camera-button] to take a picture (12M pixels).
While recording video, press the [camera-button] to take a snapshot (2M pixels).
4.9 Connecting external GPS receiver (Optional accessory)
To use the GPS function, purchase an external GPS receiver mount (available from Amazon).
- Install the external GPS mount onto the camera instead of the original mount.
- Connect the mini USB connector to the GPS mount's port and power it on.
- Once charged, the camera turns on. If a microSD card is inserted, it will start recording. Press the [ok-button] to stop recording first. Press the [menu-button] to enter setup, then navigate to "GPS Setup" > "GPS Setup" to enable the GPS function.
- The GPS receiver will search for a signal. The GPS icon [gps-icon] will be gray initially and turn orange upon successful signal acquisition.
- You can enable GPS tracking and speed stamps in "Record Setup" > "Stamp" > "GPS Stamp" and "Speed Stamp".
- Review videos with GPS data using the VANTRUE GPS Viewer, available for download at www.vantrue.net.
4.10 Viewing video and photos
Press MENU and go to "Files" > "Normal" or "Files" > "Event" to view and playback videos on the camera. Use [up-button]/[down-button] to select videos and [ok-button] to playback/pause. Press [up-button] for slow playback, [down-button] for fast forward.
Note: Photos cannot be viewed on the camera.
Press the [camera-button] to delete a video or all videos.
View on a computer
- Connect the data cable's mini USB connector to the camera's port.
- Connect the data cable's larger USB A connector to your computer.
- The camera screen will show "Mass Storage" or "USB Connecting".
- The device will appear as a removable drive or volume on your computer.
Note: When connected to a computer, the camera cannot be operated or set up. For charging and operation, connect to a USB phone charger or car charger.
View on a TV
The camera has a mini HDMI port for HDTV connection. A mini HDMI to HDMI cable is required (not included).
- Charge the camera using a USB charger.
- Connect the mini HDMI connector to the camera's HDMI port.
- Connect the other HDMI connector to your TV's HDMI port.
- Set your TV to HDMI input mode.
- The camera screen will turn black and display on your TV.
Note: Always connect the camera to a power source via USB when using HDMI mode. Live video recording is not supported when connected to a TV; only recorded videos can be viewed.
4.11 Upgrading the firmware
The system updates automatically if a firmware upgrade file is present on the microSD card. The camera will restart upon completion.
Check the VANTRUE website (www.vantrue.net) for the latest firmware updates. Registering your product on www.vantrue.net/register will provide email notifications for new firmware.
4.12 Working temperature
The camera operates between 32°F and 158°F (0°C to 70°C). Temperatures outside this range may affect performance and device longevity.
Avoid exposing the camera to direct sunlight in hot weather. In extreme cold (below 32°F/0°C), remove the camera from the windshield and store it in a storage box if not in use.
