Adjustments
Eyecup Adjustment
The eyecups provide a comfortable viewing experience and help block extraneous light. For users wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses, roll down the eyecups. This action brings your eyes closer to the binocular's ocular lenses, allowing you to see the full field of view.
IPD (Interpupillary Distance) Adjustment
The distance between your pupils, known as interpupillary distance (IPD), varies between individuals. To adjust the binoculars to your IPD or "eye to eye" width:
- Point the binoculars at a white wall or a blank area of the sky. Hold the binoculars and look through them as you normally would, without focusing yet.
- Firmly grasp each side of the binocular. Move the left and right sides closer together or farther apart until you see a single, continuous image with no shaded areas.
Focus and Diopter Adjustment
Follow these steps for optimal focus:
- First, adjust the eyecups and IPD as described in the preceding sections.
- Cover the objective lens on the right side of the binocular using the attached lens cap or your hand.
- Using the center focus knob, focus on a distant object with fine detail (e.g., a brick wall, tree branches) until it appears as sharp as possible when viewed through the left side of the binocular.
- Uncover the objective lens on the right side, and cover the left objective lens while continuing to view the same object.
- Rotate the diopter adjustment ring, located directly below the right eyecup (not the center focus knob), to bring the object into focus for the right eye. (On compact models, rotate the entire right eyecup). Avoid over-turning or forcing the diopter mechanism. If you cannot achieve focus for your right eye, ensure the left side is still in focus (repeat steps #2-4 if necessary). The diopter adjustment provides "fine focus" for the right eye to compensate for slight differences in vision between your eyes.
- Your binoculars should now be adjusted for your vision. You can now focus on any distance by simply turning the center focus knob. It is recommended to note your diopter setting (the position of the index mark on the diopter ring relative to the plus and minus marks on the binocular below the ring) for future reference, in case the ring is accidentally moved.
Attachment and Mounting
Neckstrap Attachment
To attach the neckstrap, thread its ends through the strap lugs on each side of the binocular (start from the bottom of the lug and push the strap up through the top, then back through the plastic buckle on the strap). Adjust the binocular's position around your neck for comfort by altering the strap length equally on both sides. For aftermarket straps with metal O-rings, attach them to a plastic zip tie on the lugs rather than directly to the lugs to prevent damage to the binocular's finish.
Tripod Mounting
To mount the binoculars on a tripod or monopod, unscrew or remove the cap covering the threaded socket at the end of the center hinge. Use a compatible binocular tripod adapter (e.g., a 90° angle bracket like the Bushnell #161002CM) to attach your Pro Hunter binoculars to any standard tripod in a horizontal position for a stable image during prolonged viewing.
Care of the Optics
Your Simmons Pro Hunter binoculars are designed for years of trouble-free service with proper care, similar to any fine optical instrument. Avoid sharp impacts; set the binoculars down gently on hard surfaces. Ensure the neckstrap is securely attached before wearing. Store your binoculars in a cool, dry place whenever possible.
Cleaning
- First, blow or brush away any dust or debris from the lenses using "canned air" or a soft lens brush.
- To remove dirt or fingerprints, clean with the supplied soft storage bag (made of washable microfiber cloth) by rubbing in a circular motion. Avoid using coarse cloths (like paper towels) or excessive rubbing, which can scratch the lens surface and cause permanent damage. Breathe lightly on the lens to provide slight moisture, then gently rub with the microfiber cloth.
- For more thorough cleaning, use photographic lens tissue and photographic lens cleaning fluid or isopropyl alcohol. Always apply the fluid to the cleaning cloth, never directly to the lens.
- Never use household window cleaning liquids, facial tissues, or clothing with abrasive fibers, as these can damage the optical coatings on the lens surfaces.
