Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the LG DVD Player. This manual provides information on the operation and maintenance of your DVD player. Please read it carefully and retain it for future reference. If the unit requires service, contact an authorized service location.
Important Safety Information:
- Read all instructions before operating the product.
- Do not remove the back cover to avoid electric shock. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
- The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol alerts to uninsulated dangerous voltage.
- The exclamation point symbol alerts to important operating and maintenance instructions.
- WARNING: To prevent fire or electric shock hazard, do not expose this product to rain or moisture.
- WARNING: Do not install this equipment in a confined space such as a bookcase or similar unit.
- CAUTION: Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- CAUTION: This product employs a Laser System. Do not try to open the enclosure to prevent direct exposure to laser beam.
- CAUTION: The apparatus shall not be exposed to water or liquids.
- Protect the power cord from physical or mechanical abuse. Ensure the plug is easily accessible.

Compatibility Note: Not all high definition television sets are fully compatible with this product and may cause artifacts. In case of 525 or 625 progressive scan picture problems, switch the connection to standard definition output. Contact LG customer service for compatibility questions.
Disc Format Option: For rewritable discs, set the disc format option to [Mastered] for compatibility with LG players. Do not use Live File System.

Symbols next to section titles indicate applicability to specific disc types (DVD, CD, MP3, WMA, DivX, etc.).
Handling Discs
- Handling: Hold discs by the edges. Do not touch the playback side. Never stick paper or tape on the disc.
- Storing: Store discs in their cases. Do not expose to direct sunlight or heat.
- Cleaning: Clean discs with a soft, dry cloth from the center outwards. Do not use strong solvents.
Maintenance and Service
- Shipping: Save original shipping carton and packing materials for shipping.
- Exterior Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use strong solvents.
- Unit Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth.
- Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended after every 1,000 hours of use. Contact an authorized service center for details.
Front Panel
- (Power): Turns the unit ON or OFF.
- Disc Tray: Insert a disc here.
- (Open / Close): Opens or closes the disc tray.
- Display window: Shows the current status of the unit.
- Remote sensor: Point the remote control here.
- USB Port: Connect a USB Flash Drive.
- (Play): Starts playback.
- (Stop): Stops playback.
- (Skip): Returns to the beginning of the current chapter or track, or goes to the previous chapter or track.
- (Skip): Goes to the next chapter or track.
Remote Control
POWER: Switches the unit ON or OFF.
OPEN/CLOSE ( ): Opens and closes the disc tray.
CLEAR: Removes a track number or marker.
TV Control Buttons: For TV operations (if applicable).
SCAN ( / ): Searches backward or forward.
SKIP ( / ): Goes to the next or previous chapter/track/file.
NUMERICAL BUTTONS: Selects numbered items in a menu.
DVD MENU: Accesses or exits the DVD menu.
TITLE: Accesses the disc's title menu.
ENTER: Confirms menu selection.
DISPLAY: Accesses or exits On-Screen Display.
PAUSE/ STEP ( ): Pauses playback or performs frame-by-frame playback.
PLAY( ): Starts playback.
STOP( ): Stops playback.
Navigation Buttons ( / / / ): Navigates menus.
AUDIO: Selects an audio language or channel.
SUBTITLE: Selects a subtitle language.
ANGLE: Selects a DVD camera angle.
SETUP: Accesses or exits the setup menu.
MARKER: Marks any point during playback.
SEARCH: Displays MARKER SEARCH menu.
PROGRAM: Enters program edit mode.
ZOOM: Enlarges video image.
REPEAT: Repeats a chapter, track, title, or all.
A-B: Repeats a section.
RESOLUTION: Sets the output resolution for the HDMI jack.
RETURN ( ): Moves backwards in the menu or exits the menu.
Note: Pressing the Audio Button for more than 3 seconds controls volume. Use navigation buttons to adjust volume.
Installation and Setup
Connections:
- Video and Audio to TV: Connect the color-coded jacks (yellow for video, red for right audio, white for left audio). If your TV has mono input, connect to the left (white) audio jack.
- HDMI Connection: Connect the HDMI OUTPUT jack to the HDMI input jack of an HDMI-compatible TV using an HDMI cable (optional).
- Component Video Connection: Connect the COMPONENT/PROGRESSIVE SCAN OUTPUT jacks to the corresponding input jacks on your TV using a YPbPr cable. Connect audio cables separately. This connection is required for progressive scan signals.
- Digital Audio Output: Connect OPTICAL or COAXIAL DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT jacks to your amplifier. Ensure the audio format matches your amplifier's capabilities.
- 5.1CH Audio Output: Connect to an amplifier with analog 6-channel input jacks. For digital surround sound, your amplifier must have a digital multi-channel decoder. Make appropriate sound settings in the setup menu.
Resolution Setting:
- You can change the resolution for component video and HDMI output (576i/480i, 576p/480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p). Press RESOLUTION repeatedly to select.
- For 720p and 1080i on component video, only non-copy protected discs can be played.
- If the picture disappears or is abnormal, press RESOLUTION repeatedly until it reappears.
- Note for 1080p: Some 1080p TVs may not accept 60Hz images, preventing display from this unit.
- HDMI/DVI Connection Note: Ensure devices are switched off before connecting. Switch on the HDMI/DVI device first, wait 30 seconds, then switch on this unit. Ensure the connected device's video input is set correctly.
Audio Connection to Optional Equipment:
- Analog Stereo/Dolby Pro Logic: Connect AUDIO OUT jacks to your amplifier's audio IN jacks.
- Digital Stereo/Multi-channel Decoder: Connect DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) to your amplifier using an optional digital audio cable.
- Digital Multi-channel Sound: Requires an audio/video receiver supporting formats like MPEG 2, Dolby Digital, and DTS.
- Analog 6 Channel: Connect to a multi-channel A/V receiver with 6 Channel connectors. Make sound settings in the setup menu.
About HDMI: HDMI supports both video and audio on a single digital connection, including HDCP for content protection. It offers uncompressed digital video and high bandwidth.
General Operation
Initial Settings: Use the Setup menu to adjust picture, sound, and language settings. Press SETUP to display/exit the menu. Use navigation buttons to select options and ENTER to confirm.
Language Settings: Select preferred languages for audio track, subtitles, and menu language in the Setup menu.
TV Aspect: Set to 4:3 for standard TVs or 16:9 for wide TVs.
Display Mode (for 4:3 TV):
- Letterbox: Displays wide pictures with black bands at the top and bottom.
- Panscan: Displays wide pictures filling the screen, cropping the sides.
Progressive Scan: Provides higher quality pictures with less flickering. Connect to a progressive scan compatible TV.
Audio Settings: Set player's AUDIO options according to your audio system type.
- PCM: For two-channel digital stereo amplifiers.
- Off (DTS): DTS signal is not output.
- Sample Freq.: Select 48 kHz if your receiver/amplifier does not handle 96 kHz signals. Select 96 kHz if it does.
- Speaker Setup: Set to 2ch or 5.1ch. For 5.1ch, adjust volume balance and distance. Settings are active on Analog Multi Channel Output.
- DRC (Dynamic Range Control): Compresses dynamic range for listening at lower volumes.
- Vocal: For multi-channel karaoke DVDs.
- Dolby Digital / DTS / MPEG: Select Bitstream if connecting to a decoder-equipped amplifier.
LOCK (Parental Control): (Not available in DV422)
- Set an Area Code and password.
- Rating: Blocks playback of rated DVDs based on content. Select a rating from 1 (most restrictive) to 8 (least restrictive).
- Unlock: Disables parental control.
- Password: Enter or change the password.
- Forgot Password: Clear the password by entering '210499'.
DivX® VOD: This is a DivX Certified device that plays DivX video. Obtain a registration code from www.divx.com/vod to rent or purchase videos.
- DivX File Requirements: Check supported file extensions (.avi, .mpg, .mpeg), subtitle formats, codec formats, audio formats, sampling frequencies, bit rates, and file name limitations.
OTHERS:
- B.L.E. (Black Level Expansion): Select On for expanded grey scale or Off for standard grey scale. (NTSC system only)
- Rec Bitrate: Choose a bit rate for USB direct recording (higher bit rate = better quality, more space).
Playing a Disc
Basic Playback:
- Open tray, insert disc, close tray, press PLAY.
- Press STOP to stop playback. The unit may memorize the stopped point for resume playback.
Navigation:
- Skip ( / ): Move to the next/previous chapter/track.
- Fast Forward/Reverse (SCAN): Press SCAN ( or ) repeatedly to change playback speed. Press PLAY to resume normal speed.
- Pause/Frame-by-Frame (PAUSE/STEP): Pause playback or press repeatedly for frame-by-frame. Press PLAY to continue.
- Repeat (REPEAT): Select chapter, track, title, or all to repeat. Press REPEAT to select [Off] for normal playback.
- A-B Repeat (A-B): Set start and end points to repeat a section. Press A-B to select [Off] to return to normal playback.
- Title Menu (TITLE): Access the disc's title menu.
- DVD Menu (DVD MENU): Access the disc's main menu.
- Marker (MARKER): Mark up to 9 points. Use SEARCH to recall or clear markers.
- Time Search: Press DISPLAY, select clock icon, enter time code, press ENTER.
- Zoom (ZOOM): Enlarge the video image. Use navigation buttons to move within the zoomed image. Press CLEAR to exit zoom.
- Audio (AUDIO): Switch between available audio languages, channels, or encoding methods. Press and hold for 3 seconds to control volume.
- Subtitle (SUBTITLE): Select a subtitle language. Press and hold for 3 seconds to change character set for DivX subtitles.
- Angle (ANGLE): Select a different camera angle if available.
Special Playback Features:
- Power Resume: The unit memorizes the last playback position even after power loss.
- Screen Saver: Appears after 5 minutes of inactivity in stop mode and may turn off the unit.
- System Select: Select PAL or NTSC system mode by holding PAUSE/STEP for over 5 seconds when no disc is inserted.
Playing Mixed Discs or USB Flash Drives (DivX, MP3/WMA, JPEG): Use TITLE to select the desired file menu.
Playing DivX Movies:
- Check DivX file requirements (file extensions, subtitle formats, codecs, audio, sampling frequency, bit rate).
- Subtitle display may require changing the character set.
Listening to Music Discs/Files (MP3/WMA):
- Check MP3/WMA file requirements (extensions, sampling frequency, bit rate).
- Display file information (ID3 TAG) by pressing DISPLAY repeatedly.
- Program Playback: Create a custom playback order using the PROGRAM button.
Viewing Photo Files (JPEG):
- Check JPEG file requirements (extension, photo size).
- Select a photo file and press PLAY to view in full screen.
- Slide Show: Use navigation buttons to start a slide show. Change speed using navigation buttons. Listen to music during slide show if music files are present.
- Rotate Photo: Rotate photos using navigation buttons.
- Zoom Photo: Zoom and pan through photos using navigation buttons. Press CLEAR to exit zoom.
Playing CD-G Discs: A menu appears on screen. Select tracks using navigation buttons and press PLAY. Press STOP twice to display the CD-G menu.
Using a USB Flash Drive
- Connect a USB Flash Drive (version 2.0/1.1) to the USB port.
- Display the menu screen in stop mode using RETURN ( ).
- Select a file using navigation buttons or DVD MENU, then press PLAY.
- Remove the USB Flash Drive safely.
- Note: Do not extract the USB device while operating. Regular backup is recommended. USB extension cables or hubs may cause recognition issues. Not all USB devices are supported. Digital cameras and mobile phones are not supported. The unit cannot be used as PC storage.
USB Direct Recording
- Insert an Audio CD.
- Connect a USB Flash Drive.
- Select a track using navigation buttons or DVD MENU.
- Start recording by pressing AUDIO. Press STOP to stop recording.
- Notes: Recording is available only for Audio CD tracks. A "CD_REC" folder is created on the USB drive. Do not remove the USB drive or turn off the unit during recording. Ensure sufficient free space on the USB drive. CD-G discs and DTS encoded Audio CDs cannot be recorded. External HDDs, multi-card readers, and other devices are not supported. Recording speed can be set using AUDIO during recording. Recording format is MP3.
