Your ONT

The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is the device fitted to your wall during installation, which connects your home to the fibre optic cable. It is then connected to your router via an Ethernet cable.

Underside of ONT

  1. Optical Port: This is where the fibre optic cable enters the building.
  2. LAN-10GE Port: Connects to the WAN port of your router via an Ethernet cable.
  3. Reset Button: Please do not press this button as it will cause you to lose your internet connection. Contact Wildanet support if you experience issues.
  4. Power Port: Connects to your wall socket via a 12V plug.

Your Router

Your router, which will resemble one of the models shown, was installed by a Wildanet engineer. This guide will help you manage its functions.

Router Components and Functions:

  1. Power: Ensure the power adapter is fully inserted.
  2. WAN Port: Connects to your ONT via an Ethernet cable.
  3. LAN Ports: For direct wired connections to devices.
  4. WLAN Button: Toggles your WiFi network on or off.
  5. WPS Button: Used for easy device pairing (e.g., printers, Sky boxes) without needing a password.
  6. Reset Button: Press for less than 10 seconds to reboot the router; press for over 10 seconds to reset to factory settings. Requires a pin or paper clip.

Diagrams: Two Nokia router models are shown. The Nokia Beacon G6 is depicted with its ports labeled 1 through 6, and a bottom view showing the reset button. The Nokia Beacon 3.1 is also shown with its ports labeled 1 through 6.

Basic Setup

Follow these steps to set up your router and get connected:

  1. Plug the power adapter into the router's power port.
  2. Plug the other end of the power adapter into your wall socket.
  3. Ensure the on/off switch is set to 'on'. A front indicator light will appear when the router powers up, which may take a few minutes.
  4. Connect your devices (phone, computer, etc.) using the WiFi credentials (SSID and WiFi Key) printed on the bottom of your router.

Customising Your WiFi Network

We recommend downloading the Nokia WiFi App to maximize your home WiFi experience. The app allows you to:

Setting Up The Nokia WiFi App

For security, the Nokia WiFi App only functions when your mobile phone is connected to your Nokia home WiFi network.

  1. Connect your smartphone to your new home WiFi network: Open your smartphone's WiFi settings and connect to the network using the SSID and password found on the bottom of your router.
  2. Download the Nokia WiFi app: Search for "Nokia WiFi" in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and download the app.
  3. Enter the details: Open the app and tap 'Get Started'. You will be prompted to scan the QR code on your router or manually enter the details printed below it.

Configuring Your WiFi Network

  1. Name your first WiFi point: After scanning the QR code or entering details, you can rename your WiFi points using the pencil icon ✏️. It's recommended to name them based on their location (e.g., "Living Room") for easier identification, especially in a mesh network.
  2. Set WiFi name and password: On the next screen, you can change your WiFi network's name (SSID) and password using the pencil icon ✏️.
  3. Router reset: Changing the password will temporarily disconnect your network for approximately 5 minutes while the router reboots with the new credentials.

Create a Guest WiFi Network

A guest WiFi network allows you to provide internet access to visitors without compromising your main network's security or access to your connected devices.

  1. Locate the guest network card in the app: Open the Nokia WiFi app and swipe left on the main network name card. A pre-existing guest network will appear, currently inactive.
  2. Switch on guest WiFi network: Tap the toggle switch next to the guest network to enable it.
  3. Router reset: Enabling the guest WiFi will temporarily disconnect your network for about 5 minutes. Both your main and guest WiFi networks will be ready after the router reboots.
  4. Share internet access with your guests: Tap the share button on the guest network card to view, edit, and share the guest WiFi password or QR code.

Parental Controls

Utilize Nokia's built-in parental controls to manage your children's WiFi usage. You can set internet access schedules and pause internet for specific devices or users.

  1. Open Profiles in the Nokia WiFi app: Navigate to the 'Profiles' section.
  2. Create a profile for a child: Tap 'Create New', name the profile (e.g., 'Aaron'), and press 'Continue'. Select the devices belonging to that child and tap the check mark ✔️.
  3. Create a schedule: Within a profile, tap 'Schedules'. Here you can name the schedule, set start and end times, and select the days of the week for internet access.
  4. Pause/Resume WiFi Access: Select a profile and tap the 'Pause' button to disable internet access, or 'Unpause' to resume it.

WiFi Performance

WiFi signals can be affected by various factors, including walls, large appliances, microwave ovens, other wireless devices, and neighboring WiFi networks. While signals pass easily through wood and glass, they are blocked by metal, brick, and stone. The performance of your connected devices also plays a role; older devices may perform less effectively.

The further you are from the router, the weaker the signal becomes. For optimal performance, place your router in the room where you use the internet most frequently. Keep the router in an open space, away from cupboards, corners, or behind furniture. Ideally, position it higher up rather than on the floor.

Need to stretch your WiFi further? If you experience good WiFi signal in one area but struggle in others, consider Wildanet's mesh WiFi solution. Call us at 0800 0699906.

Create a Mesh WiFi Network

If you have a mesh WiFi service from Wildanet, you will receive Nokia Beacons 3.1s that work with your main Nokia router to create a seamless mesh WiFi network throughout your home.

  1. Check your main router: Ensure your main router is powered on and connected to the internet.
  2. Choose where to position your mesh WiFi access points: Place additional Beacon 3.1s in areas needing better coverage. Position them no more than two rooms apart and avoid placing them between load-bearing walls, metal appliances, or large furniture. You may need more than one additional Beacon to cover your entire home.
  3. Open the Nokia WiFi App: Navigate to 'Network', then 'WiFi Points'. Tap 'Add WiFi Point' and then the '+' sign to proceed.
  4. Scan the QR code: The app will prompt you to scan the QR code on your device or enter the details manually if scanning is not possible.

Image: A sequence of smartphone screenshots showing the Nokia WiFi app interface for adding and managing WiFi points in a mesh network. A Nokia Beacon 3.1 device with its QR code is also depicted.

Step 5: Place your Beacons

Once you have scanned the QR code or entered the details manually, the app will test the Beacon's location. Press 'Next' to initiate the test. The app will assess the distance between your phone and router to determine if the location is suitable. It will indicate if the Beacon is too close or in an optimal position. After selecting the best location, press 'Next' to add the Beacon to your network.

Troubleshooting Problems

The Nokia WiFi app allows you to monitor connected devices and their connection health.

To troubleshoot:

  1. Step 1: Open the Nokia WiFi app and tap 'Devices' to view all connected devices and their connection health. (Note: If you have a mesh system, the 'Network' button shows mesh nodes; otherwise, it shows only your router.)
  2. Step 2: Tap on the router or a mesh node icon to see connected devices and their signal strength. If a device has a poor signal, try moving it closer to a Beacon or contact Wildanet for coverage improvement.
  3. Step 3: Click on a device to view details like its MAC address, IP address, and other network information.
