Vitapur Point-of-Use Water Dispenser

Use & Care Guide

Models: VWD9506W-POU, VWD9506BLS-POU

Important Note

Your Vitapur water dispenser features a "safety" float switch mechanism for the "Kettle Feature" hot water tank heating system. If water is absent or low, the hot water heating system cannot activate. If water is drawn during heating and levels drop, the hot water tank operation automatically stops until normal levels are restored. You must then manually reactivate the hot water heating by pressing the red kettle feature button. The cold water system is not affected.

Important Safeguards

Grounding Instructions

Improper use of the grounding plug can result in electric shock, serious injury, or death. This appliance must be grounded. Grounding reduces shock risk by providing an escape wire for electric current. It is equipped with a grounding wire and plug and must be connected to a properly grounded polarized outlet. Consult a qualified electrician if grounding instructions are unclear. If the wall outlet is a standard 2-prong outlet, it must be replaced with a properly grounded 3-prong outlet. Never cut or remove the third prong. Do not use an adapter plug or extension cord. If the power cord is too short, have a qualified electrician install an outlet nearby.

Professional installation by a licensed plumber is highly recommended. If installing yourself, follow these guidelines:

Copper Pipe Plumbing (Soldering Required):

Flexible Pipe Plumbing (No Soldering or Glue Required):

Installation Location:

Select a suitable location in your home/kitchen with easy access to an electrical wall outlet and cold water supply line.

Getting Started (Main Water Line Hook-Up):

  1. IMPORTANT: Turn off the cold water supply.
  2. Open the cold water faucet to purge the system and minimize water leakage cleanup.
  3. Using a tube/pipe cutter, cut and remove a section of the cold water line at the desired height, above any manual shut-off valve.
  4. Copper Pipe Plumbing: Clean copper pipe ends with emery cloth, apply flux to all surfaces to be soldered (including inside the tee). Follow manufacturer's instructions for the shut-off valve.
  5. Flexible Pipe Plumbing: Follow manufacturer's instructions for the Quick-Grip Tee and shut-off valve.
  6. Close the newly installed shut-off valve. Slowly reopen the cold water supply and check for leaks. If leaks are detected, immediately close the supply and repair.
  7. The dispenser includes 8 meters (26 feet) of 1/4" OD flexible water line. If additional line is needed, purchase at a hardware store. Cut to desired length, ensuring straight cuts at both ends (See Fig. 1 & Fig. 2). Remove compression nut and ring from the valve and install onto the water line (See Fig. 3).
  8. Insert the water line into the valve until it stops. Slide the compression nut and ring toward the valve and tighten the nut firmly with a wrench. CAUTION: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN (See Fig. 4 & Fig. 5).
  9. The dispenser has a manual "shut off" valve on the rear (See Fig. 6A). Connect the incoming water line to the open side of this valve using quick-connect fittings (no tools required). Insert the line until it stops. WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE WATER SUPPLY LINE AT THIS STAGE.
  10. To disconnect the water line from the shut-off valve, remove the blue locking "c-clip" (See Fig. 14) by pulling it forward.
  11. To release the water line, press and hold the white outer collar surrounding the line (See Fig. 15) while pulling the line out. NOTE: Locking "c-clips" must always be installed prior to water line installation.

Installation of Filter

The filter is shipped separately and is located behind the lower front panel. To access it:

  1. Remove the drip tray by pulling it forward (See Fig. 7).
  2. Remove the Phillips screw securing the lower panel (See Fig. 8).
  3. The filter is secured by 2 retaining clips. Remove and unwrap the filter (See Fig. 9 & 9A).
  4. To attach the filter to the filter head, ensure the blue locking tab on the front of the filter head is pushed fully up (See Fig. 10).
  5. Screw the filter (1/4 turn clockwise) into the filter head until it stops. Push down the blue locking tab to lock it (See Fig. 11). If the tab does not engage, the filter may not be tight enough; re-tighten.
  6. The red arrow on the filter head indicates water flow direction (in/out).
  7. Installation is complete. Turn on the water supply slowly and inspect all connections for leaks before fully opening water valves. Repair any leaks immediately.

Water Leakage Detection System

This dispenser has a low voltage water leakage detection system located inside the filter compartment, covered by a removable drip tray (See Fig. 16). If water contacts the system, an audible alarm will sound continuously until the water is removed. Upon activation, the internal water inlet solenoid valve automatically closes, suspending water flow until the alarm is silenced. To silence the alarm, remove accumulated water around the sensors using a sponge or paper towels. The water inlet solenoid valve automatically reopens once the alarm is silenced.

Filter Replacement

For optimum water efficiency and performance, replace the filter every 6 months. Order replacement filters from Customer Service at 1-866-253-0447 or online at www.greenwayhp.com/shopping. Replacement Filter part number is VSRF-9.

CAUTION: Always turn off the water supply using the manual shut-off valve at the rear of the dispenser before replacing the filter. This depressurizes the water line and minimizes overspray. Remove and empty the drip tray under the filter. If the audible alarm sounds, refer to the "WATER LEAKAGE DETECTION SYSTEM" instructions.

Initial Product Cleaning

Regular maintenance, including cleaning every 6 months (coinciding with filter replacement), is essential for hygiene and performance. A cleaning kit is available via Customer Service or online.

Cleaning Solution: Use Vitapur dispenser cleaning solution, a mild soap and water mixture, or a pre-mixed solution of 15ml (1 tbsp) bleach with 4.5L (1.2 gal) of hot water.

  1. Always disconnect the power cord before any cleaning, maintenance, or filter replacement.
  2. Always turn off the water supply using the manual shut-off valve at the rear before any cleaning, maintenance, or filter replacement.
  3. To access the reservoir system, remove the top cover by unscrewing the two Philips screws at the rear (See Fig. 17 & 17A). Carefully lift off the top cover.
  4. Remove the black reservoir cover by pulling upward (See Fig. 17B).
  5. Follow manufacturer's instructions for cleaning solutions or use the pre-mixed bleach solution. Fill the reservoir and let stand for 20 minutes.
  6. Press both dispensing taps until the cleaning solution stops flowing (collect in a container/bucket).
  7. Flush the reservoir with clean water, pressing both dispensing taps until water stops flowing (collect in a container/bucket).
  8. To drain any remaining water, remove the drain cap and plug located at the rear (See Fig. 18). Collect water in a container/bucket. IMPORTANT: Re-install and tighten the drain cap and plug.
  9. Re-install the reservoir cover by pressing down firmly.
  10. Re-install the dispenser top cover and secure with the two Philips screws.
  11. Reconnect the power cord.
  12. Re-open the manual shut-off valve. You should hear water entering the system, which will stop automatically when appropriate levels are reached.
  13. Place a container under the spigots and press both dispensing buttons (separately) to ensure normal water flow from each side.

Operating Instructions

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Vitapur water dispenser has a "safety" feature (float switch mechanism) controlling the "Kettle Feature" hot water tank heating system. If water is low or absent, hot water heating is not possible. If water is drawn during heating and levels drop below safety levels, the hot water tank operation automatically terminates until normal levels are restored. You must then manually reactivate the hot water heating system by pressing the red "Kettle Feature" button. The cold water system is unaffected.

Child Resistant Safety Switch:

DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE THE HOT WATER DISPENSING BUTTON WITHOUT PROPER AND DIRECT SUPERVISION. To prevent accidental dispensing of hot water that could harm a child, the hot water dispensing button can only be operated when the child resistant safety switch is activated. To dispense hot water, push/hold the child safety switch sideways (in the direction of the arrow on the switch) from right to left, then press/hold the hot water button. Once water starts flowing, you can release the child safety switch. The switch automatically re-engages to the locked position when the hot water button is released.

Dispensing Hot Water:

WARNING: Hot water is heated to approximately 90°C (194°F). Temperatures above 52°C (125°F) can cause severe burns from scalding. DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE THE HOT WATER DISPENSING BUTTON WITHOUT PROPER AND DIRECT SUPERVISION.

The "Kettle Feature" (hot water) system is designed to save energy and money. Unlike conventional systems that run 24/7, the "Kettle Feature" activates the hot water system only when the red button is pressed, delivering steaming hot water in under 3 minutes. To stop/cancel the "Kettle Feature" during a cycle, press the red button a second time; the red LED will turn off.

  1. Press the "Kettle Feature" (red) button. The red LED will flash, indicating the heating system is operational. The heating cycle takes approximately 3 minutes. When complete, the red LED will change from flashing to a steady "on" state, signifying optimum temperature has been reached.
  2. To dispense hot water, place a cup/glass under the spigot, push/hold the child safety switch to the left, and press the hot water dispensing button (with red line indicator) until the desired amount is dispensed. The red LED will turn off automatically when dispensing stops. NOTE: The factory default hot water temperature is not adjustable on this unit.

Dispensing Cold Water:

The cooling system activates automatically when the power cord is connected.

  1. When the blue LED is "off", the cooling cycle is operational. When the blue LED is "on", the cooling cycle (compressor) is off, and the cold water has reached optimum temperature.
  2. To dispense cold water, place a cup/glass under the spigot, push/hold the cold water dispensing button (with blue line indicator) until the desired amount of water is dispensed.

Adjusting the Temperature (Cold Water Only):

The cold water reservoir temperature is controlled by a rear thermostat. The factory default setting is "mid-point". Turn the thermostat set screw (See Fig. 19) clockwise (using a screwdriver) between "L" (warm) and "H" (colder) to adjust temperature. If water flow is poor, ice buildup may occur if the thermostat is set too cold; slowly rotate the dial counter-clockwise to a warmer setting.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Refer to "Initial Product Cleaning" and follow steps 1-13.

Cleaning the Drip Tray (Not Dishwasher Safe):

Pull the drip tray towards you. Empty and clean it regularly to remove spotting and mineral deposits. Clean with Vitapur cleaner or mild soap and water. For tough deposits, add vinegar and let soak until loose. Wash, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Replace the grill on the tray and install.

Cleaning the Outside of the Water Dispenser:

Wipe the exterior with Vitapur cleaner or a mild soap and water mixture. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry surfaces.

Cleaning the Condenser:

Vacuum or sweep dust from the condenser coils at the back of the dispenser. A brush designed for this purpose can improve cooling and efficiency.

Internal Reservoir Water Overflow Protection:

The internal (cold tank) reservoir has a water overflow flotation device (See Fig. 20).

"A" is the primary flotation device that manually controls incoming water and levels during normal operation. The float moves up/down with water levels. As levels rise, the float closes the water inlet valve at a predetermined level. As levels fall, the float opens the valve for replenishment.

"B" is the secondary flotation device that engages only if device "A" malfunctions, preventing overflow. This float only moves upward as water levels rise, permanently closing the water inlet valve. When "B" engages, a manual "re-set" is required to restore normal water activity.

Re-setting Water Overflow Protection:

  1. Disconnect the power cord.
  2. Turn off the water supply using the manual shut-off valve at the rear.
  3. Place a cup/glass under the dispensing spigot and drain approximately 3 cups of cold water.
  4. Remove the top cover by unscrewing the two Philips screws at the rear (See Fig. 17 & 17A).
  5. Carefully lift off the top cover.
  6. Place a towel on top of the reservoir cover.
  7. Press the white re-set button on the reservoir cover (See Fig. 21). A small burst of water will release, depressurizing the line and releasing float "B". Clean any excess water from the reservoir cover. Reconnect the power cord.
  8. Slowly re-open the manual shut-off valve. You should hear water entering the reservoir. If not, close the valve and repeat steps 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8.
  9. Re-install the dispenser top cover and secure with the two Philips screws.
  10. Reconnect the power cord.

Draining the Reservoirs:

IMPORTANT! Unplug the dispenser before this procedure. Dispense hot water until the temperature drops to a safe level to avoid scalding risk.

  1. Turn off the water supply using the manual shut-off valve at the rear.
  2. Press both dispensing buttons until water stops flowing.
  3. Place a container/bucket beneath the drain valve at the rear (See Fig. 18).
  4. Remove the drain cap and plug from the drain valve and let remaining water flow into the container/bucket. Replace the cap and plug.

Going Away on Vacation:

If not using the dispenser for extended periods or going on vacation, unplug it and drain the reservoirs (see Draining the Reservoirs). Follow initial product cleaning procedures upon return and startup.
