GARDENA Holiday Watering Set
Operating Instructions and Guide
Introduction
Congratulations on becoming the owner of a GARDENA Holiday Watering Set. This system is designed to automatically water your indoor plants during your absence, such as holidays. It can also be used for watering terrace and balcony plants.
This manual will guide you through the correct use of your Holiday Watering Set. Please read these operating instructions carefully.
The manual is divided into two parts: Part 1 covers setup and operating instructions, while Part 2 provides technical data and important safety information.
Tip: Keep these operating instructions handy. Your next holiday is sure to come!
What the Holiday Watering Set Does
Imagine an automatic watering can that takes over your plant care while you are away. The Holiday Watering Set uses a pump to deliver water from a container to individual plants for one minute each day.
It can water up to 36 plants. You determine the amount of water each plant receives daily. To get a feel for the correct water dosage, it is recommended to set up and test the system a few days before your departure.
A complete setup can look like the image shown.
Components
You have likely unpacked all the parts. If not, please do so now and lay them out as shown in the photo.
- 1. Transformer with Timer
- 2. Pump (14-V low voltage)
- 3. Distributor tubing (Ø 4 mm)
- 4. Drip distributors 1-3 (light, medium, and dark grey) with end caps
- 5. Drip tubing (Ø 2 mm)
- 6. Hose holders
- 7. Clamp nuts and sealing screws
- 8. Container (9 L) - Art. No. 1266 only
Visual description: The image displays all the components laid out neatly, including the pump, transformer, various tubing, distributors with multiple outlets, and hose holders.
Preparation for Installation
Before setting up the system, estimate how much water your plants typically need. You will notice significant differences. Group your plants into three categories based on their water requirements, as illustrated in the photo.
Tip: When grouping pots, ensure they are placed elevated above the water level in the container. This prevents the system from continuing to water after the set duration.
Oversized saucers or drip trays should be used to collect any excess water.
Assigning Drip Distributors
After grouping your potted plants, assign the appropriate drip distributors to each group:
- Light grey drip distributor 1: For plants with low water consumption. Delivers approx. 15 ml per day per outlet (about a shot glass).
- Medium grey drip distributor 2: For plants with medium water consumption. Delivers approx. 30 ml per day per outlet (about 1.5 shot glasses).
- Dark grey drip distributor 3: For plants with high water needs. Delivers approx. 60 ml per day per outlet (about three glasses).
Tip: When grouping plants, choose a location about 1 meter away from the window to avoid direct sunlight. Remember that changing the location can affect a plant's water needs; plants in bright, warm spots require more water than those in cool, shady locations.
Installation
First, connect the distributor to the pump (2) using the 4 mm distributor tubing (3). The pump has three outlets, meaning each distributor has its own connection.
Cut the distributor tubing to the required length, matching the distance between the pump (consider the water container's location!) and the individual drip distributors assigned to your plant groups.
Use the provided clamp nuts. Slide a tubing end through a clamp nut (thread pointing towards the end) and push the tubing onto the distributor's connection. Screw the clamp nut firmly to secure it (see Fig. 1 & 2). Repeat this process for the pump connections.
If you do not use a distributor, seal the remaining pump outlet with one of the provided sealing screws (see Fig. 3).
Next, install the drip tubing (5), which are the thinner hoses. Cut the drip tubing to the length needed to reach each plant pot from the distributor. Cut the end where water exits at an angle for better flow (see Fig. 4). Attach this end to one of the three slots on a hose holder (6) and place the holder in the plant pot (see Fig. 5).
Cut the other end of the drip tubing straight and push it onto a distributor outlet until it is fully seated (see Fig. 6).
Seal any unused distributor outlets with the provided end caps (see Fig. 7). If you run out of end caps, you can blind off unused outlets using short pieces of drip tubing (see Fig. 8).
After equipping a plant group with drip hoses, it should resemble the photo (see Fig. 9). Connect the other groups to your watering system in the same manner.
Water Container
For users without a GARDENA Water Container
You need to select a water container. A simple bucket is sufficient for testing. For your holiday, you may need a larger container. Calculation is straightforward: If you use all 36 outlets from the three distributors, the system uses approximately 1.3 liters of water per day.
To calculate the total volume needed, multiply the number of days you will be away by 1.3 liters. For example, for 21 days of holiday: 21 days x 1.3 L/day = 27.3 liters. A wash tub could be used as a container.
It is advisable to plan for slightly more water to account for evaporation. This also prevents the pump from running dry and being damaged.
Tip: Covering the container with an opaque material (e.g., a towel) can help reduce natural algae growth.
For users with a GARDENA Water Container
The GARDENA water container (8) is sufficient for approximately one week of full operation (all 3 x 12 outlets used). If you are away for longer, refer to section 5.1.
The lid has a small opening through which the distributor tubing and pump cable are routed (see Fig. 10).
Commissioning
Now for the crucial step: Fill the container with water and connect the pump to the transformer (1) (see Fig. 11).
Never connect the pump to another transformer or directly to the mains!
The transformer must be placed in a safe, dry location!
Place the pump in the water (see Fig. 12). Ensure the pump rests on the bottom of the container. When you plug the transformer into the socket, the pump will start and run for about one minute. Check all connections for leaks.
To prevent damage to the pump, never operate it without water.
To restart the system, unplug the transformer from the socket and plug it back in. This action also sets the system's start time.
The system will now automatically operate for one minute every 24 hours. The start time is determined by when you plug in the transformer.
Example: If you activate the system at 4:00 PM, your plants will be watered daily at 4:00 PM for one minute.
The pump may also operate if the power supply is interrupted, for example, during a thunderstorm. This might shift the start time but does not affect the system's function.
Observe the system for a few days and adjust the plant-to-distributor assignments if necessary.
If you have plants with very low water needs, you can water multiple plants from a single drip hose. Place these plants (which must be in terracotta pots for water absorption) in a large saucer or tray, and position a drip hose to drip into the tray (see Fig. 13).
Naturally, a plant with higher water needs can be supplied by multiple drip hoses (see Fig. 14).
Tip: Plants tolerate under-watering better than over-watering. Adjust the drip hose assignment if water is still present in the saucer an hour after watering.
Maintenance
The system is virtually maintenance-free. After decommissioning the system, clean the pump's foam filter. To do this, detach the orange base of the pump by pressing the side locking mechanism, remove the sieve (see Fig. 15), and rinse under clear water.
When dismantling the system, be aware that some residual water may be in the hoses. Simply lift the drip distributors and allow any residual water to drain into the pots.
Troubleshooting
- No water is pumped: The pump sieve should be cleaned (see Section 7).
- The system continues to run after the pump stops: One or more drip tube ends are below the water level in the container. Position the pots so that the drip points are above the water level.
- You need additional parts for your next use: Our customer service is available to help you reorder all parts (including hoses). The address is on the last page.
- The outlets of a drip distributor are insufficient for the plant group: Use the next smaller distributor and equip the plant pot with double the number of drip hoses planned for the original distributors (one outlet on the dark grey distributor 3 corresponds to two outlets on the medium grey distributor 2, or four outlets on the light grey distributor 1).
- The LED blinks: The pump impeller is blocked. Remove the filter and free it with a small screwdriver.
Safety Instructions
For safety reasons, children and young people under 16 years of age, as well as persons unfamiliar with these operating instructions, must not use the Holiday Watering Set.
Always use original GARDENA parts, as the system's functionality cannot be guaranteed otherwise.
Regularly check the cable for damage. Plugs and cables must only be used in perfect condition. If the cable is damaged, unplug immediately.
Damaged cables cannot be replaced.
When performing any work on the GARDENA Holiday Watering Set, unplug the power supply unit from the socket.
The pump must only be operated with the 14-V low-voltage power supply in conjunction with the GARDENA plug-in power supply unit with timer. Direct connection to 230 V poses a life-threatening risk!
Do not run the pump dry.
