Control4 Essential Lighting Wiring Guide
This guide provides essential information for wiring Control4 Essential Lighting products, including the Essential Forward Phase Dimmer (C4-V-FPD120), Essential Switch (C4-V-SW120-277), and Essential Auxiliary Keypad (C4-V-AUX).
SCREW TERMINALS ON ESSENTIAL LIGHTING PRODUCTS
Control4 Essential Lighting products feature convenient dual quick-connect holes and screw terminals, allowing for daisy-chaining devices for easier installation.
Important Wiring Information
- Essential Lighting products are rated for use with copper wire only.
- Use 14 AWG or larger wires suitable for at least 80 °C.
- To use the quick-connect holes, strip 5/8" (16 mm) of insulation from the wires.
- To use the screw terminals, strip 1" (25 mm) of insulation from the wires.
Wiring Examples
SWITCH-LEG CONFIGURATION
This diagram illustrates a sample wiring configuration using an Essential Forward Phase Dimmer (C4-V-FPD120) in a switch-leg setup, where no neutral wire is present in the wallbox.
Diagram Description: Power from the breaker box (Line) connects to the Line terminal of the dimmer. The Load terminal of the dimmer connects to the light fixture. The Ground terminal connects to earth ground. The Neutral wire is not connected at the switch location in this configuration.
Wiring Legend:
- Black: Line voltage
- Red: Load (to light)
- Gray: Neutral
- Green: Earth ground
- Blue: Traveler
- Red/White: Load/neutral (switch-leg)
Important Notes:
- The Essential Forward Phase Dimmer does not support an Auxiliary Keypad when installed in a switch-leg configuration.
- The Essential Switch does not support switch-leg configuration.
3-WAY CONFIGURATIONS WITH AN ESSENTIAL AUXILIARY KEYPAD
These diagrams show sample 3-way wiring configurations using an Essential Forward Phase Dimmer (C4-V-FPD120) or Switch (C4-V-SW120-277) with one Essential Auxiliary Keypad (C4-V-AUX).
3-way Line - Load - Light (Dimmer at line switch location)
Diagram Description: The Line from the breaker box connects to the Line terminal of the Line Switch (Dimmer or Switch). A Traveler wire connects from the Traveler terminal of the Line Switch to the Traveler terminal of the Load Switch (Auxiliary Keypad). The Load from the Line Switch connects to the light fixture. Neutral and Ground wires connect to both switches and the light.
3-way Line - Load - Light (Dimmer at load switch location)
Diagram Description: The Line from the breaker box connects to the Line terminal of the Line Switch (Auxiliary Keypad). A Traveler wire connects from the Traveler terminal of the Line Switch to the Traveler terminal of the Load Switch (Dimmer or Switch). The Load from the Load Switch connects to the light fixture. Neutral and Ground wires connect to both switches and the light.
3-way Load - Light - Line (Light between Line and Load switch locations)
Diagram Description: The Line from the breaker box connects to the Line terminal of the Load Switch (Dimmer or Switch). The Load from the Load Switch connects to the light fixture. A Traveler wire connects from the Traveler terminal of the Load Switch to the Traveler terminal of the Line Switch (Auxiliary Keypad). Neutral and Ground wires connect to both switches and the light.
4-WAY CONFIGURATION WITH ESSENTIAL AUXILIARY KEYPADS
This diagram shows a sample 4-way wiring configuration using an Essential Forward Phase Dimmer (C4-V-FPD120) or Switch (C4-V-SW120-277) with two Essential Auxiliary Keypads (C4-V-AUX). Daisy-chain each additional Auxiliary Keypad by extending the Ground, Traveler, and Neutral to each keypad.
Diagram Description: The Line from the breaker box connects to the Line terminal of the first switch (Dimmer or Switch). Traveler wires connect between the Traveler terminals of all switches (Dimmer/Switch and Keypads). The Load from the final switch connects to the light fixture. Neutral and Ground wires are connected to all switches and the light.
Notes:
- The Essential Forward Phase Dimmer and Switch support up to five Auxiliary Keypads, daisy-chained in 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-way wiring configurations.
- Each Essential Auxiliary Keypad can be up to 100 m (300 ft) from the dimmer, switch, or another keypad. The total distance from the dimmer or switch to all connected keypads can be up to 300 m (1000 ft).
MULTI-GANG BOX WIRING EXAMPLE
This diagram shows a sample multi-gang box configuration with an additional 3-way location using multiple Essential Forward Phase Dimmers (C4-V-FPD120) or Switches (C4-V-SW120-277) and an Essential Auxiliary Keypad (C4-V-AUX).
Tip: Use the two quick-connect terminals to daisy-chain your wiring to save clutter in a multi-gang box installation. For example, take ground into each dimmer and then out to each light.
Diagram Description: Illustrates a three-gang box containing multiple devices, such as two Forward Phase Dimmers or Switches and one Auxiliary Keypad. The wiring demonstrates daisy-chaining of Ground, Load, Line, Neutral, and Traveler wires between devices and to the light fixture, optimizing space and connections.
