Getting Started
This guide provides essential information for setting up and using your Zebra DS2278 Digital Scanner.
Digital Scanner Features
- Scan Window: The area through which the scanner reads barcodes.
- Scan Trigger: The button to activate the scanner.
- Scan LEDs: Indicate scanner status (e.g., decoding success).
- Beeper: Provides audible feedback for scanning events.
Battery Installation and Removal
Battery Removal:
- Unscrew the battery compartment.
- Remove the battery.
Battery Insertion:
- Replace the battery.
- Push down to secure.
- Screw to tighten the compartment.
Note: It is recommended to fully charge the battery before use.
Charging Options
- Cradle Cable Connect and Insert: Connect the cradle cable to the host port.
- Charge Only Micro USB Connection: Use a Micro USB cable for charging.
- Micro USB HID Conversion: For faster charging when using a Micro USB cable, scan the HID Device Conversion barcode. This allows the scanner to enumerate as an HID device.
Connecting to a Host
Step 1: Connect Host Interface
The interface cable automatically detects the host interface type and uses the default setting. If the default setting does not meet your requirements, scan one of the host barcodes below.
USB Interfaces
Scan one of the following barcodes to set the USB interface:
- USB Keyboard (HID)
- HID Device Conversion
- IBM Hand-Held USB
- OPOS (IBM Hand-Held with Full Disable)
- Symbol Native API (SNAPI) with Imaging
RS-232 Interfaces
Scan one of the following barcodes to set the RS-232 interface:
- Standard RS-232
- Nixdorf RS-232 Mode A
- Nixdorf RS-232 Mode B
- ICL RS-232
- Fujitsu RS-232
Keyboard Wedge Interfaces
Scan one of the following barcodes to set the Keyboard Wedge interface:
- IBM AT Notebook
- IBM PC/AT and IBM PC Compatible
- IBM 46XX (Port 5B)
- IBM 46XX (Port 9B)
- Table-Top Scanner Emulation (Port 17)
Note: Cables may vary depending on configuration.
Useful Bar Codes
Scan the following barcodes to configure specific scanner functions:
- Return to Factory Defaults: Resets the scanner to its original settings.
- Add an Enter Key (Carriage Return/Line Feed): Appends an Enter key after scanned data.
- Add a Tab Key: Appends a Tab key after scanned data.
- USB Caps Lock Override Bar Code: Enables or disables USB Caps Lock override.
Aiming and Pairing
Aiming: The scanner uses a laser for aiming. Ensure the aiming beam is centered on the barcode.
Pairing: To pair directly with your PC, tablet, or phone, scan the 'HID Bluetooth Classic' barcode. You must then discover and connect to the scanner from your device.

Troubleshooting
Digital Scanner Not Working
- No power to scanner: Check system power; ensure the battery is charged.
- Interface cable is loose: Ensure all cable connections are secure.
- Host interface not configured properly: Scan appropriate host parameter barcodes.
- Digital scanner is disabled: Program the correct ADF rules.
Digital Scanner Decoding Barcode, but Data Not Transmitting
- Ensure the correct host interface cable is used.
- Scan appropriate host parameter barcodes.
Digital Scanner Not Decoding Barcode
- Digital scanner not programmed for barcode type: Ensure the scanner is programmed to read the type of barcode being scanned.
- Host interface not configured properly: Scan appropriate host parameter barcodes.
- Distance between scanner and barcode incorrect: Move the scanner closer to, or further from, the barcode.
- Barcode unreadable: Ensure the barcode is not defaced; try scanning a test barcode of the same type.
Scanned Data Incorrectly Displayed on Host
- Region improperly configured: Select the appropriate country and language encoding scheme.
Beeper and LED Indications
Beeper Indications
- Power up: Low/medium/high beeps
- Barcode decoded: Medium beep
- Transmission error detected; data is ignored: 4 long low beeps
- Successful parameter setting: High/low/high/low beeps
- Correct programming sequence performed: High/low beeps
- Incorrect programming sequence, or Cancel barcode scanned: Long low/long high beeps
Scanner LED Indications
- Off: Digital scanner is on and ready to scan, or no power to scanner.
- Green flash: Barcode is successfully decoded.
- Red: Transmission error.
Ergonomic Recommendations
To avoid or minimize the potential risk of ergonomic injury, follow these recommendations:
- Reduce or eliminate repetitive motion.
- Maintain a natural position.
- Reduce or eliminate excessive force.
- Keep frequently used objects within easy reach.
- Perform tasks at correct heights.
- Reduce or eliminate vibration.
- Reduce or eliminate direct pressure.
- Provide adjustable workstations.
- Provide adequate clearance.
- Provide a suitable working environment.
- Improve work procedures.
Scanning Posture:
- Avoid extreme wrist angles.
- Avoid bending.
- Avoid reaching.
