Pioneer ELITE Blu-ray Disc™ Players Reference Guide
Introduction
This reference guide details the features and specifications of the Pioneer ELITE BDP-88FD and BDP-85FD Blu-ray Disc Players, designed for high-fidelity audio and video reproduction.
Applicable models are indicated by icons: BDP-88FD and BDP-85FD.
Construction
The players feature robust construction designed for optimal performance and reduced vibration:
-
Three-Chamber Structure
Separates power supply, digital processing, and audio circuit blocks to eliminate electrical and signal interference. Shield cases enclose the power supply and digital processing blocks for isolation.
-
Double-Layered Chassis
A 1.6 mm chassis base reinforced with a 3 mm plate provides a low center-of-gravity and overall rigidity, preventing external vibration transfer and improving disc reading.
-
Highly Rigid Center Frames
Steel center frames enhance chassis rigidity and are optimally laid out to minimize vibration and signal loss.
-
Steel Plate Top Panel and Aluminum Side Panels
A 1 mm thick steel top panel is fixed at multiple points for rigidity. Aluminum side panels offer high damping effects to minimize internal chassis vibration.
-
Steel Plate Bonnet
A 1 mm thick steel plate bonnet adds extra rigidity to the chassis.
-
Rigid & Quiet BD Drive
Features a rigid structure for strong resistance against vibration. Includes a steel shield drive case with anti-vibration paint (BDP-88FD only), a steel drive base, tray shaft, and a tray with anti-vibration paint. The drive base is connected via a damper to prevent drive vibration transfer to the chassis.
The Acoustic Damper Tray uses separate tray cover and base connected by springs to further dampen vibration generated within the drive.
Video Features
Advanced video processing for superior image quality:
-
Precise Pixel Driver
Enhances detail and reduces noise for a more precise and beautiful image. Features HD Detail Enhancer for texture detail and Triple HD Noise Reduction to combat grainy noise, block noise, and mosquito noise.
-
4K Reference Converter
Upscales HD video content to full-spec 4K signals (24p YCbCr 4:4:4/36-bit, 60p YCbCr 4:2:2/36-bit, etc.). Utilizes Pioneer's tuning for high-resolution images on 4K displays. Includes Texture Processing and Edge Processing for vivid detail and natural 3D effects.
-
Stream Smoother
A video adjustment feature designed to reduce block and mosquito noise in low bit rate network content (e.g., YouTube) for finer, clearer images.
-
36-bit Deep Color
Supports 36-bit Deep Color for smooth gradation steps and accurate color information, resulting in detailed, natural color reproduction (4096 steps vs. 256 steps for 24-bit).
-
"x.v.Color"
Supports "x.v.Color" to expand the color gamut, more closely matching natural human vision.
-
HDMI 1080p/24 Hz & 2160p/24 Hz Output
Outputs video at 1080p/24 Hz or 2160p/24 Hz, matching the original film's frame rate for natural and smooth motion. Requires a compatible TV and HDMI cable.
-
Video Adjust
Offers 13 video adjustment items, including noise reduction and detail enhancement. Up to three custom settings can be saved. Preset Video Adjust Modes are available for different content and displays, including a 'Reference' mode that bypasses processing.
Audio Features
High-fidelity audio playback technologies:
-
ESS SABRE32 Reference DAC (ES9018) / Ultra DAC (ES9011)
Features ESS SABRE32 DACs for highly precise D/A conversion, delivering clear audio with ultra-low distortion and high signal-to-noise ratio. The BDP-88FD uses the Reference DAC, while the BDP-85FD uses the Ultra DAC.
-
Large-Capacity Power Supply Transformer
Dedicated transformer for audio with high response. Features separated analog and digital power supply pathways to prevent digital noise interference. A shield case with copper plating and anti-vibration paint minimizes electromagnetic waves and standing waves.
-
Acoustic Custom Capacitors and Other High-Grade Parts
Utilizes exclusive capacitors and gold-plated terminals for superior audio performance.
-
Zero Signal Terminal
A Pioneer-original feature that acts as a ground reference (GND) for tuning audio and video quality. Connecting it to an unused input on an AV receiver helps match reference levels for precise signal transmission.
-
Precision Audio
Drastically eliminates jitter in analog audio output by using a high-precision clock and matching the phase between Lch and Rch signals for ultra-low jitter D/A conversion.
-
PQLS Bit-stream
Pioneer's Precision Quartz Lock System (PQLS) eliminates distortion caused by timing errors in digital audio transmission. It controls audio signals between the AV receiver and Blu-ray player for optimal digital-to-analog conversion, requiring 'Control with HDMI' to be enabled.
-
Dual HDMI Output
Provides two HDMI output terminals (Main and Sub) for separate transfer of audio and video signals. Supports Dual Mode (Audio/Video on both), Separate Mode (Video on Main, Audio on Sub), and Pure Audio Mode (Audio on Main, no signal on Sub) for interference-free sound.
-
Audio Scaler
Includes Hi-bit32 for wider dynamic range, Up-Sampling to reduce audible noise and enhance detail, and Digital Filter to improve response characteristics by removing pre-echo for clearer sound.
-
Balanced Analog Audio Output
Equipped with balanced analog audio output terminals for quality sound playback.
-
Direct Function
Blocks audio/video digital signal processing to deliver pure, high-quality sound from Hi-Res 2ch audio files or CDs.
-
SACD Compatible
Supports playback of SACD (2ch/Multi-ch) high-fidelity audio format and can output DSD signals.
-
Sound Retriever Link
Works with Pioneer AV receivers to restore lost music cadence in compressed audio. The Sound Retriever Link automatically selects the optimal Sound Retriever mode based on the source being played.
Network Features
Connectivity and streaming capabilities:
-
DLNA Certified™ (1.5)
Functions as a DMP (digital media player) and DMR (digital media renderer). Allows searching and streaming content from a DMS (Digital Media Server) over a home network. Supports Wi-Fi Direct for streaming without an access point.
-
iControlAV5 Remote App Ready
Control the player using a free app on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Android devices. Supports 8 languages. Requires connection to a home LAN network.
