3.3 HOW TO USE THE RICE COOKER FUNCTIONS

Maximum Capacity:

OPTIONS FOR COOKING RICE:

Approximate Cooking Times:

Rice Selected Time Taken
'LONG GRAIN' 35 mins
'SHORT GRAIN' 37 mins
'BROWN' 60 mins
'YUMCARB WHITE' 40 mins
'YUMCARB BROWN' 60 mins

Markings inside the inner bowl indicate water levels for different rice types. The YumCarb steaming basket also has markings for white and brown rice.

During cooking, a chasing lines pattern appears on the display, and a countdown will appear in the last 10 minutes.

Cooking STICKY or GLUTINOUS rice

Sticky or glutinous rice requires more water than normal short grain rice. Follow the water guidance below and use the short grain setting.

Water levels for 'THAI STICKY/GLUTINOUS' rice:

Cups of rice Water level on bowl (short grain marks)
1 1.5
2 2.5
3 3.5
4 4.5
5 5.5

3.3.1 COOKING RICE IN KUMO

  1. Measure rice using the provided measuring cup, leveling it off at the top for a full 180ml measurement.
  2. Clean the rice if necessary. Place the inner bowl into the appliance, add the rice, and fill with water to the corresponding line for the amount/type of rice being cooked.
  3. Close the lid and select the rice setting. The cooking cycles will start automatically after a 5-second delay.

For example, when cooking 3 cups of white rice, fill to water level 3.

Tips for cooking rice:

3.4 HOW TO USE THE KEEP WARM FUNCTION

After a cooking cycle finishes, the appliance automatically switches to 'KEEP WARM'. You can also activate 'KEEP WARM' from standby by pressing the 'KEEP WARM' button. The button will light up, and a count-up clock will appear. The 'KEEP WARM' function can be used for 24 hours, but it's recommended to consume rice within 15 hours for best quality.

To cancel 'KEEP WARM', press the power button (which also functions as 'CANCEL') to turn off the unit.

3.5 HOW TO USE THE OTHER COOKING FUNCTIONS

3.5.1 PORRIDGE

This setting is for Asian rice porridge or oatmeal porridge. The default cooking time is 1.5 hours. You can adjust this from 1 to 3 hours using the +/- buttons in 5-minute intervals. After selecting the time, there is a 5-second delay before the cycle starts. The appliance will switch to 'KEEP WARM' upon completion.

3.5.2 STEAM

Use the provided stainless steel steaming basket to steam various foods. You can cook rice and steam food simultaneously (1 cup of rice maximum). Do not use with YUMCARB functions for steaming and rice cooking together.

The default cooking time for 'STEAM' is 10 minutes. You can adjust this from 5 minutes to 1.5 hours using the +/- buttons. After selecting the time, there is a 5-second delay. A countdown appears on the display once the water has heated. Using hot water speeds up the heating process.

See Section 5, page 12 for a guide to steaming.

3.5.3 SLOW COOK

Select 'SLOW COOK' for stews, curries, dhal, or other pulses/grains. The default cooking time is 2 hours. You can adjust this up to 6 hours using the +/- buttons. After selecting the time, there is a 5-second delay, and the cycle starts. The appliance heats to a high temperature, then switches to a lower temperature for slow cooking. This is similar to the 'auto' setting on a conventional slow cooker. The appliance will switch to 'KEEP WARM' upon completion.

Kumo's slow cook setting is efficient due to its sealed unit design, cooking food faster. A 7-8 hour slow cooker recipe typically takes 3-4 hours in Kumo.

3.6 CANCELLING PROGRAMMES

To cancel a program part way through, press the 'power' button once to switch off the appliance. To switch to standby, press the 'power' button twice in quick succession.

3.7 HOW TO USE THE DELAYED START (PRESET) FUNCTION

The 'PRESET' function allows you to set the appliance for your rice or food to be ready at a specific time. This feature is available for all settings.

  1. Press the button for the desired cooking program. For non-rice programs, you can set the cooking time at this point.
  2. Press the 'PRESET' button, which will light up.
  3. Use the '+' and '-' buttons to select the desired ready time (in 5-minute increments).
  4. After setting the time, there is a 5-second delay. The cooker will display the hours in advance, start counting down, and complete the cycle at the specified time.

If the preset time is set below the minimum stated in the table, the cooking cycle will start immediately, as the default cooking time and assessment time for the fuzzy logic are taken into account.

Suggested timings for the ‘PRESET’ function:

Function RICE PORRIDGE STEAM SLOW COOK
Preset timings 70 mins to 24 hrs 70 mins to 24 hrs 1 hr to 24 hrs 130 mins to 24 hrs

The start time of the preset/timer is not exact. Kumo assesses the contents (rice/oats/water) and volume to calculate cooking time, turning on early to do so.

4. COOKING GREAT TASTING RICE

4.1 HOW TO COOK PERFECT RICE

Measure rice accurately using the provided measuring cup. Rinse the rice in a sieve or bowl with cold water, stirring loosely and draining until the water runs clear. Repeat 2-3 times.

Be accurate with the water! The amount of water significantly affects the rice texture. After washing, place rice in the inner bowl and top up with water to the corresponding line on the inner bowl. Fill to the underside of the line for perfect rice. For softer rice, fill to the top of the line; for firmer rice, fill 2-3mm below the line.

Stir and loosen! Once the appliance switches to 'KEEP WARM', stir and loosen the rice with the spatula. This helps release excess moisture for fluffy rice.

4.2 OUR TIPS FOR RICE COOKING AND GETTING PERFECT RESULTS

5. HOW TO USE THE STEAM FUNCTION

Use the appliance as a stand-alone steamer (1.5-2 cups of water) or cook rice and steam food simultaneously. For combined cooking, use the rice function for the rice and place the steaming basket in the inner bowl above the rice.

Estimated Cooking Times for Steaming:

INGREDIENTS AMOUNT COOKING TIME TIPS FOR STEAMING
Carrot 150g 20 mins Cut into bite-size pieces
Broccoli 150g 15 mins Cut into bite-size pieces
Spinach 80g 15 mins Cut into bite-size pieces
Pumpkin 200g 20 mins Cut into bite-size pieces
Potato 250g 40 mins Cut into bite-size pieces
Sweet Potato 200g 35 mins Cut into bite-size pieces

IMPORTANT: Do not steam food over 3.5cm thick.

If combining rice and steaming, use a maximum of 1 cup of rice. If more is used, the steaming basket may push into the lid and open it.

You can carefully open the lid during the cooking cycle to add the steaming basket part way through if vegetables are not over-cooked.

6. RECIPES

Here are a couple of recipes to get you started. For more recipes, visit the Yum Asia foodie blog at www.greedypanda.co.uk.

RICE PORRIDGE (CONGEE)

Ingredients (2-3 servings):

Directions:

  1. Wash rice, place in inner bowl, add water (to ½ mark on porridge scale), place chicken on top.
  2. Press the ‘PORRIDGE' button; the cooking cycle starts after a 5-second delay.
  3. When the cooker switches to ‘KEEP WARM', add salt (if desired) and garnish with ginger and spring onions.

OATMEAL PORRIDGE

Ingredients (serves 2):

Experiment with oat and water amounts for desired thickness. You can also add chopped apple or cocoa powder.

Directions:

  1. Place the inner cooking pan in the rice cooker, add oats and water. Select the ‘PORRIDGE' setting and adjust timing as preferred (longer time = thicker porridge). The cooking cycle starts after a 5-second delay.
  2. When the cooker switches to ‘KEEP WARM', open the lid, stir, and add remaining ingredients. Soaking oats overnight and using the Timer function can help soften the texture.
  3. Add dried or fresh fruit instead of sugar for a healthy option.

Note: Do not use milk to cook oats, as it can cause boil-over. Only use water.

SUSHI ROLLS

Ingredients (4-5 servings):

Directions:

  1. Wash rice, place in inner bowl, add water (follow inner bowl water levels) and use the 'SHORT GRAIN' menu option.
  2. When the cooker switches to 'KEEP WARM', place rice in a wooden container (wiped with a clean, wet cloth), pour vinegar mix over, and mix while cooling with a fan.
  3. Hand-roll sushi by wrapping your favorite ingredient with nori (seaweed).

RICE PUDDING

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. Measure rice using the cooker's measuring cup. Rinse rice in cold water, place rice and water (to the correct line) in the inner bowl, and select the 'SHORT GRAIN' setting.
  2. Meanwhile, whisk evaporated milk, coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon), lemon zest, and nutmeg.
  3. When rice is cooked and the cooker is on 'KEEP WARM', add the whisked milks to the rice, close the lid. Check after 30 minutes for desired consistency.
  4. Discard the cinnamon stick and lemon zest.
  5. Serve in individual dishes and garnish with ground cinnamon and cream if desired.

**Vegan adaptation: Omit evaporated and condensed milk. Use one whole tin of coconut milk and non-dairy milk to loosen after stage 5 if necessary.

7. COOKING WITH OTHER GRAINS/PULSES IN KUMO

Kumo can cook other grains and pulses. Experiment with water levels and cooking cycles. Here is a guide:

QUINOA

Rinse quinoa well. Use a 1:1 ratio of quinoa to water (1:1.25 for black quinoa). Use the white rice setting. Fluff and keep warm for 5-10 minutes after cooking.

COUS COUS and GIANT COUS COUS

Use water amounts indicated on the packet and the white rice setting.

MILLET

For each portion, measure ¼ cup of millet into the inner bowl and add 1 cup water per portion. Add a dash of salt to the water. Select the 'Porridge' cycle. Adjust timing as preferred or use the preset timer.

LENTILS and BEANS

Use the slow cook setting. Rinse beforehand and follow water levels on the pack. The porridge setting also works for lower temperature cooking.

PEARL BARLEY

Use the slow cook setting. Rinse before cooking and follow water levels on the pack. Pearl barley in soup cooks within an hour but won't overcook if left longer.

8. YUMCARB EXPLAINED

The YUMCARB function cooks rice with a lower carbohydrate value than conventionally cooked rice.

Process:

When using the YUMCARB basket, rice is submerged in water. The display shows 0:25 (or 0:40 for brown rice) for the initial phase, during which Kumo raises the temperature to optimally boil away excess water. This process allows starch to leech out and break down. The starchy water drains through the basket, preventing reabsorption.

The rice finishes cooking in the last 25 minutes of the cycle. This phase steams the rice in a lowered carbohydrate state, reducing carbohydrate levels by up to 25%*.

*Based on lab testing, a reduction of 25% less carbohydrates was shown in white rice. Certified by Testing Institute of Product Quality Supervision, China.

8.1 HOW TO USE THE YUMCARB FUNCTION

  1. Place the YUMCARB basket into the inner bowl. Add rice (rinse if needed) and water to the corresponding line (1-3 marks for white and brown rice). The initial water amount may seem high but is boiled away. Reduce water next time if rice is too soft.
  2. Close the lid, select YUM CARB (white or brown rice). The cooking cycle starts after a 5-second delay, displaying 0:25 (white) or 0:40 (brown).
  3. After the time elapses, the display counts down to 0:00. The appliance makes a sound and switches to ‘KEEP WARM’.
  4. Stir the rice well. The rice at the bottom may seem wet; this is normal. Mix thoroughly, lifting from the bottom, and leave on keep warm for at least 10 minutes.
  5. Starchy water will be present in the inner bowl beneath the YUMCARB basket. Be careful when removing the basket, as the stainless steel will be hot. The starchy water can be discarded.

Condensation may fill the collector. If the collector is full, some hot water may spill from the lid when opened.

9. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

Remove any remaining food and clean immediately after use.

STEAM CAP CARE

The steam cap on top of the lid is removable (pull upwards). Wash it regularly.

The removable steam cap can be fully disassembled for thorough cleaning. Ensure it is reassembled correctly before use.

  • Do not keep very small amounts of rice on ‘KEEP WARM'.
  • Has the 'KEEP WARM' been used for more than 15 hours?
  • The type of rice and water may have caused the rice to look yellow.
  • Was the spatula left in the inner bowl whilst on 'KEEP WARM'?
  • Did you loosen rice immediately after it had cooked – if not, loosen.
  • It may be a left over smell from a previous cooking cycle (especially if slow cooking dishes).

TIMER COOKING

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE
Appliance starts cooking immediately
  • The minimum default time is 70 minutes; anything less than this will start the cooking cycle immediately.
Food isn't ready at the set time
  • Cooking may not complete at the set time if the temperature in the room or the water level is too low.
  • Was there a power cut? This will cause the unit to reset.
