Z-Wave SM103 Door/Window Detector User Manual

The Z-Wave SM103 Door/Window Detector is a Z-Wave™ enabled device, fully compatible with any Z-Wave™ enabled network. Devices displaying the Z-Wave™ logo from any manufacturer can be used with it, and this detector can also be used with other manufacturers' Z-Wave™ enabled networks. Inclusion of this detector on another manufacturer's Wireless Controller menu allows remote control of connected modules and their lighting when the detector is triggered.

Tamper Switch

In the rear casing, there is a tamper switch used for inclusion, exclusion, or reset operations. When power is first applied, the LED flashes on and off alternately at 2-second intervals, indicating it has not been assigned a node ID and cannot function with Z-Wave enabled devices. The detector remains "awake" for 10 minutes after initial power-up for configuration. Familiarize yourself with the terms below before starting.

Terms:

  • Inclusion: Add a Z-Wave enabled device (e.g., Detector) to a Z-Wave network.
  • Exclusion: Delete a Z-Wave enabled device (e.g., Detector) from the network.
  • Association: After inclusion, define relationships between devices. Devices can be assigned master/slave roles, specifying which slave is controlled by which master.
  • Reset: Restore the Detector to factory default settings.

Association1. Have Z-Wave Controller entered association mode.
2. Press the tamper switch three times within 1.5 seconds; the unit will emit the NIF, indicating it has entered association mode.

Note: Including a node ID allocated by a Z-Wave Controller signifies inclusion. Excluding a node ID signifies exclusion. The success or failure of inclusion/exclusion can be viewed on the Z-Wave Controller.

Choosing A Mounting Location

The Door/Window Detector is suitable for mounting in dry interior locations only. Decide which doors/windows require protection, typically front and back doors as a minimum. Additional detectors can be fitted for other vulnerable doors or windows, such as garage or patio doors.

Note: Exercise caution when fixing the Detector to a metal frame or within 1 meter of metalwork (e.g., radiators, water pipes) as this may affect the device's radio range. If necessary, use a plastic or wooden spacer to position the magnet and detector away from the metal surface to ensure adequate radio range.

Installation

  1. Undo and remove the fixing screw from the bottom edge of the Detector. Remove the rear cover.
  2. Fit 3 1.5V AAA batteries into the battery compartment. Note: Alkaline batteries are recommended for longer life.
  3. Release the tamper switch without pressing the Detector. Detach or close the magnet from the Detector; the LED on the Detector will illuminate.
  4. Use the rear cover as a template to mark the positions of fixing holes on the fixed part of the frame along the opening edge opposite the hinges. Use the provided screws.
  5. Refit the Detector to the rear cover and secure it with the supplied fixing screw.

Do not overtighten fixing screws, as this may distort or damage the casing.

  1. Fit the Magnet to the moving part of the door/window opposite the Detector using the adhesive tape or 19mm fixing screws. Ensure the parallel gap between the Magnet and Detector is less than 10mm, and the matching line on the Magnet is aligned with the line on the Detector.
  2. If multiple windows need protection, wire according to the specifications below. Connect to the terminal block in the battery compartment in series. Use two-core (24AWG) wire, maximum length 4m. A cable entry cut-out is available next to the terminal block.

Note: After removing batteries, wait 5 seconds before refitting them.

Operation

  1. The unit remains "awake" for ten minutes after initial power-up for configuration.
  2. After entering sleep status, the unit can be woken by continuously pressing the tamper switch until the LED lights up once. The unit will re-enter sleep status after 10 seconds. To extend the awake period, press the tamper switch three times within 1.5 seconds to prolong it to 10 minutes.
  3. With the tamper switch not pressed, the unit enters test mode. Detach the magnet from the Detector; the red indicator LED will illuminate for testing.
  4. When the tamper switch is pressed, the unit enters normal mode. The red indicator LED will not illuminate to conserve battery life when the detector is triggered (unless the battery is low).

Programming

1. Z-Wave's Group (Association Command Class Version 2)

The unit supports one association group with up to five nodes. When the unit is triggered, all associated devices receive relevant reports.

1-1 Tamper Event Report (Alarm Report)

Press and hold the tamper switch for more than 10 seconds, then release. The unit sends an ALARM REPORT command to nodes in Grouping 1, informing them of a tamper event.

ALARM_REPORT Command: [Command Class Alarm, Alarm Report, Alarm Type = 0x01, Alarm Level = 0x11]

1-2 Control other Z-Wave Devices

When a door/window opens, the unit sends a BASIC SET command with an adjustable value to nodes in Grouping 2. For example, this can set the brightness level of a lamp module. The BASIC_SET command is also sent to nodes in Grouping 1; for instance, a lamp module will turn off upon receiving this command.

Basic Set Command:
Event Present: [Command Class Basic, Basic Set, Value = 255 (0xFF)]
Event Clear: [Command Class Switch Binary, Switch Binary Report, Value = 0x00(0)]

2. Z-Wave's Configuration

2-1 Basic Set Level

When a Basic Set Command is sent with a value, the receiver uses it for consideration. For example, a lamp module's dim level is determined by the received Basic Set command value.

Example:
0: OFF
1-99: ON (Binary Switch Device)
Dim Level (Multilevel Switch Device)

FunctionParameter NumberSizeRangeDefaultConfiguration Command
Basic Set level110~9999

2-2 Configuring the OFF Delay

The Configuration parameter for adjusting the delay before the OFF command is transmitted is Parameter #2. This parameter can be set from 1 to 127, where 1 equals a 1-second delay and 127 equals a 127-second delay.

FunctionParameter NumberSizeRangeDefaultConfiguration Command
Basic Set level210~1271s

3. Advanced Programming

This section is for users experienced with Z-Wave systems or those using Z-Wave controller software.

3-1 Battery Check Command

Users can inquire about the unit's battery status by sending a BATTERY_GET command via the Z-Wave Controller. Upon receiving the command, the unit returns a BATTERY_REPORT command. It sends a Battery_Level = 255 (0xFF) command to the Z-Wave Controller to indicate a low battery status.

BATTERY REPORT Command: [Command Class Battery, Battery Report, Battery Level = 20%-100%]

3-2 Wakeup Command Class

The unit conserves battery power by staying in sleep status most of the time. It can be woken at specified intervals using the WAKE_UP_INTERVAL_SET command from the Z-Wave Controller. After waking up, it sends a Wakeup Notification Command to the designated node ID and stays awake for 5 seconds if no WAKE_UP_NO_MORE_INFORMATION command is received. The minimum and maximum wakeup intervals are 60 seconds and 194 days, respectively. The allowable interval between wakeups is 1 second (e.g., 60, 61, 62...).

Note: The default value is 1 hour, meaning the detector awakens and sends the Wakeup Notification Command to the set node every hour.

4. Factory Default Setting
