Aeotec Limited, its importers, distributors, and resellers will not be held responsible for any loss or damage resulting from not following any instructions in this guide or in other materials.
- Keep product away from open flames and extreme heat.
- Avoid direct sunlight or heat exposure.
- Range Extender 7 is intended for indoor use in dry locations only.
- Do not use in damp, moist, and/or wet locations.
Quick Start: Adding Your Range Extender into a Z-Wave Network
Getting your Range Extender 7 up and running is as simple as plugging it into a wall outlet and adding it to your Z-Wave network. There are two methods to pairing your Range Extender depending on the capabilities of your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub.
Dedicated Hub Setup Guides
Dedicated instructions for some gateways are available:
- Range Extender 7 with AutoPilot
- Range Extender 7 with Smart Home Hub / SmartThings
- Range Extender 7 with Hubitat
- Range Extender 7 with Home Assistant
SmartStart Inclusion
You can use this method of inclusion only if your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub supports SmartStart.
- Open your Z-Wave gateway/controller/app.
- Select SmartStart inclusion.
- Scan the QR code located on the Range Extender 7. [QR Code Symbol]
- Within 10 minutes after powering your Range Extender 7, it will automatically be included into your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub. The LED will flash for 1 second after the Repeater is powered; if successful, the LED will become a solid bright light for 2 seconds.
- Once your Range Extender 7 is paired, your Z-Wave mesh network will automatically detect the best routes. If you move the Range Extender 7 after installation, ensure your Z-Wave network re-discovers its routing table.
Classic Inclusion
Step 1: Decide on placement and plug the Range Extender into a wall outlet. Ensure the LED is breathing white. [Diagram: Aeotec Range Extender 7 plugged into a wall outlet, LED breathing white]
Step 2: Set your Z-Wave Controller into pairing mode.
Step 3: Press and quickly release the Action Button on your Range Extender. [Diagram: Close-up of the Action Button and LED Indicator on the Range Extender 7]
The Range Extender 7 will quickly flash its white LED for up to 30 seconds or until successfully paired. If paired, the LED light will become brighter. If pairing fails, the LED will return to a slow breathing state. Return to Step 2 if pairing fails.
Step 4: If pairing with S2 encryption/security, enter the first 5 digits of the DSK into your controller/gateway/hub interface when requested. The DSK is printed on the Range Extender 7, located right under the QR code.
Step 5: Once your Range Extender 7 is paired, your Z-Wave mesh network will automatically detect the best routes. If you move the Range Extender 7 after installation, ensure your Z-Wave network re-discovers its routing table.
General LED Status
Pay attention to the following LED indications for the Range Extender 7:
- Unpaired from network: Slow breathing white LED. [Diagram: LED indicator showing a slow breathing white light]
- While paired to an existing network: The LED state is controllable. You can choose between two states: solid off or solid on. To toggle LED states, double-tap the RE7 action button within 1 second.
Advanced Functions
Removing Your Range Extender from a Z-Wave Network
Your Range Extender can be removed from your Z-Wave network at any time using your Z-Wave network's main controller. Refer to your controller's instruction manual for setting it into removal mode.
- Set your Z-Wave Controller into device removal mode.
- Press the Z-Wave Button on your Range Extender.
- If successfully removed, the Range Extender's LED will return to a slow breathing light.
Control LED of Range Extender 7
You can turn the LED on or off using the action button:
- Tap the Action Button twice (2x). The LED should turn on or off each time you do so.
Testing Health Connectivity
NOTE: This health detection function is only for determining the direct connection to the gateway (within communication distance without other repeater nodes). You can determine the health of your Range Extender 7's connectivity to your gateway using its manual button press, hold, and release function, indicated by the LED. Your gateway/controller/hub must support displaying Z-Wave device health for you to see this information.
Follow these steps to test the health of your Range Extender to your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub:
- Press and hold the Z-Wave Button for 5-10 seconds to test communication health.
- At 1 second: LED turns off.
- At 2 seconds: LED breathes.
- At 5 seconds: LED flashes.
- Release the Action Button to test the health.
If the LED speeds up its flashing, you held the button for too long.
Once the test is finished, the Range Extender 7 will forward a Power Level Report command to your Z-Wave gateway to display communication quality. Some gateways may not show this information if they do not support the Power Level Command Class.
Manually Resetting Your Range Extender
If your primary controller is missing or inoperable, you may wish to reset all of your Range Extender's settings to their factory defaults. Only perform this if your Z-Wave gateway/controller/hub is non-functioning or missing.
Follow these steps to factory reset:
- Press and hold the Z-Wave Button for 20 seconds to completely factory reset your Range Extender 7.
- At 1 second: LED turns off.
- At 2 seconds: LED flashes slowly.
- At 5 seconds: LED flashes rapidly.
- At 8 seconds: LED fades in and out rapidly, continuing to speed up every few seconds.
- At 20 seconds: LED becomes solid for 2 seconds, then starts to fade in and out slowly, indicating a factory reset. You may now release the button.
If successful, the LED should enter a slow breathing state, indicating it is ready to be paired to a new gateway/controller/hub.
