Safety Precautions
[Warning] TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS:
- Use this unit only as intended by the manufacturer.
- Before servicing or cleaning, switch power off at the service panel and lock the service disconnecting means. If locking is not possible, use a prominent warning device.
- Installation and electrical wiring must be done by qualified persons according to applicable codes and standards, including fire-rated construction.
- Ensure sufficient air for proper combustion and exhausting of gases from fuel-burning equipment to prevent back drafting. Follow heating equipment manufacturer guidelines and safety standards (e.g., NFPA, ASHRAE, local codes).
- When cutting or drilling walls/ceilings, do not damage electrical wiring or other utilities.
- Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
- If installed over a tub or shower, it must be marked as appropriate and connected to a GFCI protected branch circuit.
- Never place a switch where it can be reached from a tub or shower.
[Warning] Rotating parts require safety precautions during installation, operation, and maintenance.
[Caution] For General Ventilation Use Only. Do Not Use To Exhaust Hazardous Or Explosive Material and Vapors.
[Note] Inspect unit within 15 days of receipt. Report any damage to the carrier. Do NOT operate if the blower or impeller assembly is visibly damaged.
[Note] For FG Series fans, use illustration 1 for bracket mounting or illustration 2 for hanger straps.
[Note] Use duct tape for a good seal on inlet/outlet. For Fantech FC clamps, attach clamps and insert screws through the clamp into flanges. Use 1/2" sheet metal screws for duct work, ensuring they penetrate the metal but do not bind the impeller. Angle screws away from the impeller if necessary. If not using FC clamps, use 1/4" screws.
[Warning] Screen guards must be installed if the fan is within 7 feet of personnel or the working area, or when advisable for safety.
[Note] Use an appropriate duct termination device (e.g., roof cap, wall cap, louvered shutters).

Installation Instructions
General Installation Principles:
- When installing, keep the number of elbows and bends to a minimum. Long radius elbows or bends are recommended if necessary.
- Apply duct sealant, caulk, or tape to all seams, including around wall/ceiling openings and exterior penetrations, to prevent air leakage and maximize performance.
- Ducting types: Flex, spiral, or snap lock ducting may be used. For rigid duct, Fantech FC clamps are recommended for airtight seals and vibration reduction.
- If using screws for rigid duct connection, do not place them less than half an inch from the fan housing to avoid blocking the blades.
- Minimize duct run lengths to reduce static pressure losses and promote adequate airflow. Keep flex duct runs straight and taut.
- If installing in an unconditioned space, insulate the fan to prevent condensation.
- For general ventilation, install at least 8 ft of insulated flexible duct between the exhaust/supply grille(s) and the fan.
Mounting:
Illustration 1 Description: Shows how the fan bracket is mounted to the fan and then to a wall or ceiling. Different model groups (FG 4/4XL/5/5XL, FG 6XL/8/8XL/10/10XL, FG 12/12XL) are depicted with their respective mounting configurations. Use long screws (bracket-wall) to mount the bracket and short screws (bracket-fan) for the fan.
Illustration 2 Description: Illustrates that fans can be suspended without special mounting brackets using vibration-absorbing material. It also shows the mounting bracket and screw locations for various FG models (FG 4/5, FG 4XL/5XL, FG 6, FG 6XL/6M/8/8XL/10/10XL).
Illustration 3 Description: A close-up view showing a duct connection to the fan. It warns not to screw less than 1/2" from the housing, as this could block the fan blades.
Ducting Impact: The ducting from the fan to the outside significantly affects airflow, noise, and energy use. Use the shortest, straightest duct routing possible for best performance. Avoid using ducts smaller than recommended. Insulation around ducts can reduce energy loss and inhibit mold growth. Fans installed with existing ducts may not achieve rated airflow.
Wiring and Electrical Information
[Warning] SPECIAL WIRING PRECAUTIONS:
- All installations must be wired according to the provided diagrams. Failure to comply may cause the motor to hum or not operate.
- Maximum torque for terminal block screws is 0.79 Nm (7 lb-in).
[Note] A cable gland must be used for outdoor applications.
[Note] Model FGC comes pre-wired with a three-prong power cord.
[Note] Fans are equipped with either 120V or 230V motors; they are not dual voltage.
Wiring Diagrams Description:
- 120V and 230V Motors with Motor Speed Controller: Shows connections for Motor Speed Control, Capacitor, Motor (Brown, Black, Blue), and Supply (Black/L, White/N, Green/Ground).
- 120V and 230V Motors without Motor Speed Controller: Shows connections for Capacitor, Motor (Brown, Black, Blue), and Supply (Black/L, White/N, Green/Ground).
[Note] Select control based on line voltage.
Troubleshooting
If the fan fails to operate, check the following:
- Consult wiring diagrams for proper connections.
- Check motor lead wiring, incoming supply wiring, and capacitor connections for proper contact.
- If possible, use a meter to test for continuity between fan leads. Note that a capacitor may show no reading when tested with a meter.
If the fan still does not function, contact Fantech for return/replacement instructions.
Maintenance
- Fan bearings are sealed and contain internal lubricating material; no additional lubrication is necessary.
- Clean accumulated particles from the fan impeller at least once a year.

Specific Installation Notes: Range Hoods
[Warning] For installations where the fan connects to a range hood or an exhaust grill is near the cooking surface:
- Risk of Fire: Use ONLY METAL DUCTWORK. Use galvanized steel ductwork compliant with all applicable codes. Other approved ducting may be used if the fan is not connected to a range hood or grill near the cooking surface; check local codes.
- Grease Fire Prevention: Keep fans, filters, and surfaces clean and grease-free. Always turn the hood ON when cooking at high heat. Use appropriate heat settings and do not leave the stove unattended. Use proper cookware.
- Injury Prevention (Grease Fire): Smother flames with a close-fitting lid, cookie sheet, or metal tray, then turn off the burner. Be careful to prevent burns. If flames persist, evacuate and call the fire department. Never pick up a flaming pan. Do not use water, as it can cause a violent steam explosion. Use an extinguisher only if you are trained, the fire is small and contained, the fire department is called, and you have a clear exit.
