Operating Instructions
Powering On/Off
Press and hold the Power/Mode button (3) to turn the camera on or off.
Charging the Battery
The camera has an integrated lithium battery. Charge it fully before use. Connect the camera to a PC or power adapter using the Micro-USB cable. The charging indicator (10) will be blue while charging and will turn off when fully charged (9). Note: The camera may become warm during extended use, which is normal.
Inserting a Memory Card
The Escape Action Camera HD5W has no internal memory. To record videos or take photos, insert a MicroSD card (max. 32 GB, not included). Ensure the camera is off before inserting the card into slot (5). The camera supports the FAT32 file format. If your MicroSD card is not compatible, it may need to be formatted. Refer to the "Configure Camera Settings" section for formatting instructions.
Selecting Camera Mode
The camera offers 6 modes: Video, Photo, Burst, Time-Lapse, Playback, and Settings. Press the Power/Mode button (3) to open the mode selection menu. Use the Up (12) and Down (14) buttons to navigate, and press the Shutter/OK button (1) to select a mode.
- Video Mode: For recording video clips.
- Photo Mode: For taking photos.
- Burst Mode: Capture a series of 3/5/10 photos with a single press.
- Time-Lapse Mode: Record photos at set intervals until the function is deactivated.
- Playback Mode: Review recorded files.
- Settings Mode: Configure camera settings.
Video Mode
Record high-quality Full HD videos. In Settings mode, you can adjust resolution, recording duration, and enable features like motion detection, audio recording, date stamp, sport mode, and G-Sensor recording. Start and stop recording by pressing the Shutter/OK button (1). The power indicator (9) and top indicator (2) will blink during recording, and a red circle will appear on the LCD. The camera will automatically stop recording if storage capacity or battery is low.
Audio Recording in Videos
Audio quality is reduced when using the waterproof housing. For optimal audio, use the camera without the housing. Ensure the camera is dry if used without the housing.
Photo Mode
Take single photos. In Settings mode, you can configure resolution, exposure, quality, white balance, ISO, and Anti-Shake settings. Press the Shutter/OK button (1) to capture a photo. A shutter sound will play, and the LCD will blink once.
Burst Mode
Capture multiple photos with one press. Settings can be configured in Settings mode. Press the Shutter/OK button (1) to start capturing a series of still images. The power indicator (9) will blink repeatedly during the sequence.
Time-Lapse Mode
Capture multiple images at set intervals. These images can be combined using external software to create a slow-motion video effect. Settings are adjusted in Settings mode. Press the Shutter/OK button (1) to activate the time-lapse sequence. A "Beep/Shutter" sound and LCD blink indicate each interval. The camera continues capturing photos until the function is deactivated by pressing Shutter/OK (1) again.
Playback Mode
Turn on the camera and press the Power/Mode button (3) to select Playback Mode. Use the Up (12) and Down (14) buttons to navigate through files. To play a video file, select it and press Shutter/OK (1). You can fast forward with the Down button (14) or rewind with the Up button (12). Press Shutter/OK (1) to pause playback. Press the Power/Mode button (3) to return to the selection menu.
Deleting Files on MicroSD Card
- Use the Up (12) and Down (14) buttons to select the file(s) to delete.
- Press the Power/Mode button (3) to enter the Settings menu.
- Navigate to the "Delete" option using the Down button (14).
- Press Shutter/OK (1) to view delete options.
- Select "Delete this file" and press Shutter/OK (1) to confirm, or select "No" to cancel.
- Select "Delete all files" to delete all files on the MicroSD card and press Shutter/OK (1) to confirm. Select "No" to cancel or "Yes" to permanently delete.
Removing the Battery
- Slide the battery compartment lock (16) in the direction of the arrow.
- Lift the battery compartment cover (15).
- Pull the rechargeable battery out using the battery strap.
Configure Camera Settings
Access the settings menu by pressing the Power/Mode button (3) to open the mode menu, then select Settings Mode. Use the Up (12) and Down (14) buttons to navigate the settings menu. Press the Shutter/OK button (1) to enter a sub-menu.

If the Date Stamp option is enabled, ensure the date and time are set correctly. Use the Up and Down buttons to select values and press Shutter/Ok to proceed.
Rotate (Drehen)
Enable automatic 180° rotation. If a photo or video is displayed upside down, it will be automatically rotated. Options: [Off] (Aus)/[On] (Ein).
Wi-Fi Password (Wi-Fi-Passwort)
Set a Wi-Fi password for your camera. Use the Up and Down buttons to select a value, then press Shutter/Ok to confirm.
Beep (Piepton)
Enable or disable the button tone. Options: [Off] (Aus)/[On] (Ein).
Delay Shutdown (Verzögerte Abschaltung)
Options: [Off] (Aus)/[On] (Ein).
Language (Sprache)
Change the camera's language. Options: [English] (Englisch)/[German] (Deutsch)/[French] (Französisch)/[Spanish] (Spanisch)/[Italian] (Italienisch)/[Portuguese] (Portugiesisch)/[Chinese traditional] (Chinesisch Langform)/[Chinese Simplified] (Chinesisch Kurzform)/[Japanese] (Japanisch)/[Russian] (Russisch).
Frequency (Frequenz)
Adjust the camera's light frequency. Options: [50 Hz]/[60 Hz].
File Type (Dateityp)
Select the file type for your camera. Options: [Event] (Ereignis)/[Video]/[JPEG].
Format
Format your storage device. This will erase all content on the MicroSD card and create a FAT32 file system. Options: [Cancel] (Abbrechen)/[Enter].
Delete (Löschen)
Delete a single file or all files. After selecting an option, you will be prompted to confirm. Select "Delete This File" to delete the last viewed file (in playback mode), or "Delete All Files" to erase everything. Confirm with "Yes" or cancel with "No".
Factory Reset (Rückstellung)
Reset all settings to factory defaults. Options: [Cancel] (Abbrechen)/[Enter].
System Info (Systeminformationen)
View your device's model number and firmware version.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
The integrated Wi-Fi function of the Escape HD5W camera allows you to use your smartphone or tablet as a remote control and viewfinder, and to download files to your device.
Downloading the Wi-Fi App
- The Wi-Fi app, "iSmart DV", can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store™ and Google Play Store™.
- Android Users: Open Google Play Store™, search for "iSmart DV", download and install the app. Follow the on-screen instructions for connecting and operating via Wi-Fi.
- iPhone Users: Open Apple App Store™, search for "iSmart DV", download and install the app. Follow the on-screen instructions for connecting and operating via Wi-Fi.
Pairing the Camera with Your External Device
- Turn on the camera and press the Up/Wi-Fi button (12).
- The LCD (11) will display "Waiting for Wi-Fi connection...".
- On your smartphone/tablet, search for a Wi-Fi hotspot and select the "Escape HD5W" network. You will be prompted for a password; enter "1234567890".
- After successful connection, the LCD (11) will enter standby mode. If you press a camera button while in Wi-Fi mode, the connection will be lost.
- Launch the "iSmart DV" app and wait for the live feed to display as shown in Figure 1.
Using Wi-Fi in Video Mode
- After launching the app, Video Mode should be automatically selected in the recording mode controller.
- Use the live feed to view the image.
- Press the record button ▶️ to start and stop recording.
- The remaining video duration (based on available storage) will appear in the top left of the display.
- Press the resolution option to change it via a pop-up menu (Figure 2). White balance and frequency settings can be configured by tapping "Camera Settings" in Figure 1 and selecting the corresponding options in Figure 5.
Using Wi-Fi in Photo Mode
- Select Photo Mode from the recording mode controller.
- Use the live feed to view the image.
- Press the record button ▶️ to take a photo.
- The remaining photo count (based on storage) will appear in the top left of the display.
- Tap the resolution option to change it via a pop-up menu (Figure 4). White balance, frequency, and burst mode settings can be configured by tapping "Camera Settings" in Figure 3 and selecting the corresponding options in Figure 5.
Wi-Fi for File Playback
- In Video or Photo mode, tap the File Browser icon ? to open the file overview.
- To view a photo, simply select the corresponding photo file. The photo will appear full-screen.
- To view a video file, you must first download it to your device, as the application does not support direct video streaming. Refer to the following section for download instructions.
Wi-Fi for File Download
- Tap the file selection icon ? to select specific files for download.
- Tap the files you wish to download; selected files will be marked with a blue checkmark (Figure 7).
- After selecting the desired files, tap the download icon ⬇️ to download them to your storage device. A pop-up window will show the download progress (Figure 8).
- To download all files, tap the download icon and select "Download all".
Wi-Fi for File Deletion
- Tap the file selection icon ? to select files for deletion.
- Tap the files to be deleted; they will be marked with a blue checkmark (Figure 7).
- After selecting the desired files, tap the trash icon ?️ to delete them from your camera's MicroSD card (Figure 7).
Connecting the Camera
Connecting the Camera to an HDTV
- Connect a Micro-HDMI to HDMI cable (not included) to the camera's Micro-HDMI port (8) and the other end to the HDTV's HDMI port.
- Turn on the HDTV and select the appropriate HDMI source.
- Follow the "File Playback" instructions provided earlier in this manual.
- After playback, turn off the camera and HDTV before removing the HDMI cable.
Connecting the Camera to a PC
There are two ways to download files from the camera's MicroSD card to a computer:
- Connect the MicroSD card to a card reader.
- Connect the camera to a computer using the supplied Micro-USB cable.
Connecting the Camera to a PC via USB Cable
- Connect the supplied USB cable to the camera's Micro-USB port (6) and the other end to the PC's USB port. Then, turn on the camera.
- When the camera is turned on, the LCD will display "Connecting". Select "MSDC".
- On your PC, open "My Computer" (or "Windows Explorer"). A "Removable Disk" (Wechselspeichergerät) will appear in the drive list. Double-click it to view its contents. Camera files are located in the "DCIM" folder.
- Copy the desired files to your PC.
PC Camera Function
- Connect the supplied USB cable to the camera's Micro-USB port (6) and the PC's USB port. Turn on the camera.
- Turn on the camera; the LCD will display "Connecting". Select "PCCAM". For computers with Windows XP®, open "My Computer" and double-click "USB video tool". For computers with Windows Vista® 7 or 8, the PC camera function may require external software (e.g., Skype™).
Waterproof Housing
The Escape HD5W Action Camera includes a housing waterproof up to 60 meters. Always install the waterproof housing when using the camera in wet environments. It is recommended to use the housing for camera protection at all times.
Using the Waterproof Housing
- Open the waterproof housing by releasing the clip on the top. Follow the arrow markings for unlocking. Slide the upper lock to the left (i) and pull the vertical lock upwards while holding the horizontal lock in the unlocked position.
- Insert the camera correctly so the housing can be closed easily and watertight.
- Snap the top clip into place to ensure waterproofing.
- Use the external buttons on the waterproof housing to operate the camera.
Attaching Accessories
The package includes three different mounts for various outdoor activities.
- Mount (A): Allows you to attach the camera to a bicycle handlebar.
- Mount (B): Uses an adhesive and straps for attaching the camera to a vented helmet.
- Adhesive Mounts (C): Attach the camera to flat or curved, smooth surfaces.
Attaching the Camera to a Bicycle
- Loosen both screws (i) and clamp both halves (ii) of the bicycle mount (A) onto the desired handlebar position.
- Install the screws (i) and tighten them until the mount is securely in place.
- Remove the screw from the top of the mount (iii) and firmly attach the camera (inside the waterproof housing). Reinstall the screw and tighten it to secure the camera.
- If you have forward-facing handlebars, you can install the 90° adapter (iv) between the camera and the bicycle mount to orient the camera forward.
Attaching the Camera to a Vented Helmet
- Attach the camera to the clip mount (i).
- Thread the supplied straps through the slots in the flat or curved adhesive mount (do not remove the adhesive backing) (ii).
- Secure the assembled camera with the strap fixation, sliding it until it clicks into place.
- After properly attaching the camera, use the strap to secure it to the helmet. Adjust the length according to helmet size, then press the clips down until the straps engage.
Attaching the Camera to a Board/Flat Surface
- Ensure the surface is clean and dry before applying the adhesive mount.
- Peel off the adhesive backing and attach the mount to the desired position.
- Attach the camera to the clip mount (i).
- Slide the assembled camera onto the adhesive mount (C) until it audibly clicks into place.

Care for Your Action Camera
DO NOT:
- Let the camera get wet, unless it is in the waterproof housing.
- Drop the camera, as this will void the warranty.
- Open the camera; there are no repairable parts inside.
- Expose the camera to extreme temperatures or rapid temperature changes.
ALWAYS:
- Clean the camera with a soft, dry cloth and no cleaning agents.
