Locking and Unlocking the Doors

Locking/Unlocking the Doors from the Outside

This section details how to lock and unlock your vehicle's doors and tailgate from the outside using various methods.

Using the Keyless Access System

When you carry the keyless access remote, you can lock/unlock the doors, tailgate, and fuel fill door. This system operates within a radius of approximately 32 inches (80 cm) of the outside door handle or tailgate outer handle.

Diagram Description: Two diagrams show a top-down view of a vehicle. The first illustrates the keyless access range for models without a rear door touch sensor. The second shows the range for models with a rear door touch sensor, indicating a larger operational area around the rear doors.

If the interior light switch is in the door-activated position, the interior light illuminates when you unlock the doors and tailgate. The light fades out after 30 seconds if no doors are opened, or goes off immediately if doors and tailgate are relocked.

If you do not open a door or the tailgate within 30 seconds of unlocking, the doors and tailgate will automatically relock. Locking and unlocking can only be performed when the power mode is in VEHICLE OFF.

Locking the doors and tailgate

To lock the doors and tailgate:

This action typically results in exterior lights flashing, a beeper sounding, all doors, tailgate, and fuel fill door locking, and the security system setting.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the location of the Door Lock Sensor on the vehicle's front door handle and the Lock Button on the tailgate.

Important Notes for Keyless Access System:

Light flash, beep, and door unlock mode settings can be customized via the audio/information screen. Refer to "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Unlocking the doors and tailgate

To unlock the doors and tailgate:

Refer to "Opening/Closing the Tailgate" (P. 148) for more details.

Models with door outer handle ambient lights: When entering the keyless access system range with all doors locked, the door outer handle ambient lights illuminate for 30 seconds. This feature may not activate if you've stayed within range for over two minutes or if doors have been locked for several days. It reactivates after driving and locking the vehicle.

You can also unlock and open the power tailgate.

Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate grabbing the driver's door handle and the tailgate outer handle.

Locking the doors and tailgate (Walk-away auto lock®)

This feature automatically locks the doors and tailgate when you walk away from the vehicle with the keyless access remote. The auto lock function activates when all doors and the tailgate are closed, or when all doors are closed and the tailgate begins its power close operation, provided the remote is within approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) of the outside door handle.

Process:

  1. Exit the vehicle while carrying the keyless access remote and close the door(s) and tailgate.
  2. While within about 5 feet (1.5 m) of the vehicle, the beeper sounds, indicating the auto lock function is activated.
  3. Carry the remote beyond approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) and remain outside this range for 2 or more seconds. Exterior lights flash, the beeper sounds, and all doors and the tailgate lock.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows a vehicle with concentric circles indicating the 5-foot (1.5 m) activation range for the auto lock function.

Settings: The auto lock function is set to OFF by default. It can be enabled via the audio/information screen. If enabled, only the remote used to unlock the driver's door prior to the setting change can activate auto lock. Refer to "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Once activated, the keyless access remote's indicator light flashes until doors and tailgate are locked. If you remain within the operation range, doors and tailgate may automatically lock approximately 30 seconds after the activation beeper sounds. If a door or tailgate is opened after the activation beeper, the auto lock function will be delayed until all are closed.

Auto lock function will not activate under these conditions:

To temporarily deactivate the function:

  1. Set the power mode to OFF.
  2. Open the driver's door.
  3. Using the master door lock switch, cycle: Lock → Unlock → Lock → Unlock. The beeper sounds, and the function is deactivated.

To restore the function:

Models with power tailgate walk-away close: If this feature is used and all doors are closed, the auto lock function also activates. When walking away while the power tailgate is closing, it will continue to lock automatically. The user must wait for the power tailgate to fully close before the auto lock function activates.

Auto lock function does not operate if:

Auto lock function operation stop beeper: This beeper sounds for approximately two seconds in specific situations after activation, such as the remote being placed inside the vehicle through a window, being too close to the vehicle, or being placed inside the tailgate. If this occurs, verify you have the remote, then open/close a door to confirm normal auto lock activation.

Using the Remote Transmitter

The remote transmitter allows you to lock and unlock your vehicle's doors and tailgate.

Diagram Description: Diagrams show a car remote with an LED indicator, a Lock Button, and an Unlock Button.

Locking the doors and tailgate

Unlocking the doors and tailgate

If you do not open a door or tailgate within 30 seconds of unlocking, the doors and tailgate will automatically relock. The relock timer setting can be changed via "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Locking or unlocking can only be done when the power mode is VEHICLE OFF.

The remote transmitter uses low-power signals; its operating range may vary based on surroundings. The vehicle will not lock if a door is open. If the remote's working distance varies, the battery may be low. If the LED does not illuminate when a button is pressed, the battery is dead. Refer to "Replacing the Button Battery" (P. 626).

The door unlock mode setting can be customized via "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Checking Door Lock Status

You can remotely check if your vehicle's doors are locked or unlocked from extended distances using the keyless access remote.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows a keyless access remote with an LED indicator (Red, Green, Amber) and a Lock Button. The diagram illustrates the feedback colors.

Procedure:

  1. Press the lock button. The Amber (left) LED blinks once.
  2. After three seconds, one of the following feedback indications will occur:
    • Green (center) light: Indicates doors are locked.
    • Red (right) light: Indicates doors are not locked, or a door is not completely closed.
    • Red (right) light blinking three times: Indicates the remote did not receive the door lock status from the vehicle.

Operate the remote in an open space. Obstacles like buildings may affect the remote's performance. The range for unlocking the tailgate and all doors, as well as activating the panic function, is the same as for the standard keyless access remote.

You can also start or stop the engine while checking the door lock status. Refer to "Remote Engine Start" (P. 436).

Locking/Unlocking the Doors Using a Key

If the keyless access remote buttons are not functioning, use the physical key.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows a key being inserted into a car door lock, with arrows indicating "Lock" and "Unlock" directions.

Fully insert the key and turn it.

When locking the driver's door with the key, all other doors, the tailgate, and the fuel fill door lock simultaneously. When unlocking, the driver's door and fuel fill door unlock first. Turn the key a second time within a few seconds to unlock the remaining doors and the tailgate.

The door unlock mode setting can be customized via "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Locking a Door Without Using a Key

If you do not have your key or cannot lock a door with it, you can still lock the door manually.

Locking the front doors: Push the lock tab forward (1) or push the master door lock switch in the lock direction (2), then close the door.

Locking the rear doors: Push the lock tab forward and close the door.

Diagram Description: Diagrams show the location of the lock tab on the front door and the master door lock switch, with arrows indicating the locking action. A message "Keyless remote not detected. Open door to prevent relock." is also shown.

Lockout Protection Function: If the vehicle cannot detect the keyless access remote, this function activates. A beeper sounds, exterior lights flash, doors unlock, and a message appears on the driver information interface. This allows you to open a door if the remote is still inside the vehicle. If no door is opened within 15 seconds, all doors relock.

To prevent non-detection issues, keep the keyless access remote away from cell phones and other devices that might cause signal interference.

When locking the driver's door, all other doors, tailgate, and fuel fill door lock simultaneously. Ensure the key is not inside the vehicle before locking a door. The lockout protection operation setting can be changed via "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Locking/Unlocking the Doors from the Inside

This section covers interior methods for locking and unlocking doors.

Using the Lock Tab

The lock tab on the driver's door controls the locking and unlocking of doors from the inside.

When locking a door using the lock tab on the driver's door, all other doors, the tailgate, and the fuel fill door lock simultaneously. When unlocking using the driver's door lock tab, only the driver's door unlocks.

Diagram Description: A close-up diagram shows the lock tab on the inside of a car door, with arrows indicating the "To lock" (forward) and "To unlock" (rearward) movements.

Unlocking Using the Front Door Inner Handle

The front door inner handles are designed for front seat occupants to open the door in one motion.

Procedure: Pull the front door inner handle. The door unlocks and opens.

Diagram Description: A diagram shows the inner door handle of a car door.

Unlocking and opening the driver's door from the inner handle also unlocks all other doors. However, this feature requires that front seat occupants never pull a front door inner handle while the vehicle is in motion.

To prevent all doors from unlocking simultaneously, use the lock tab on the driver's door to unlock, then relock before opening. This setting is for one-time use. To disable the automatic unlocking of all doors, customize the "Auto Door Unlock" setting to OFF via the audio/information screen. Refer to "Customized Features" (P. 345).

Children should always ride in a rear seat where childproof door locks are provided. Refer to "Childproof Door Locks" (P. 145).
