Wahl Cordless Hair Clippers
User Guide and Maintenance
Tips & Techniques
Visualize the head divided into four sections for cutting: Section 1 (The neckline), Section 2 (Under the rim of the head), Section 3 (The rim or side), and Section 4 (Top of the head). Proper techniques when moving between sections help blend for professional results.
Step-by-Step Guide for Cutting Hair
- Comb hair and remove tangles. Attach the largest attachment guard to the clipper.
- Start at the hairline on the side of the head and cut up to the middle of the head. If cut hair is too long, repeat with the next smaller guard.
- Continue around the head, repeating step 2.
- Prepare to cut the middle portion of the hair.
- Use the attachment guard with the next highest number than used in step 3 (e.g., if #6 was used, select #7).
- Continue cutting around the middle portion of the head as in steps 2 and 3.
- For cutting the top of the head, use the attachment guard with the next highest number than in step 6. Start at the front bang area.
- Cut across the top of the head. Comb hair on the entire head to assess if further cutting is necessary.
Important Notes for Cutting:
- For the first haircut, cut only a small amount of hair until accustomed to the length each guard provides.
- For best results, cut hair at a slow, even speed. Do not force the clipper through the hair.
- For best results, cut against the direction of hair growth to catch more hair with the guard.
- Oil the clipper blades every few haircuts.
Blending
To blend from one section to the next, use an upward rocking motion. This leaves hair slightly longer where the clipper pulls away from the scalp, creating a smooth transition between lengths. This technique enhances the appearance of haircuts.
1. Blend out any cut lines that may form where guard sizes change. Use the same guard used in step 3.
2. Using a rocking motion, blend out the middle cut line.
3. Using the guard from step 8, repeat blending the top outline as needed.
Detailing / Outlining
- No attachments needed. Start with the sideburns.
- Continue around the ear as shown.
- Trim the neckline as shown.
Clipper Operation and Maintenance
Oil Blades
Oil the clipper blades every few haircuts. With the clipper turned ON (I), hold the unit with blades facing DOWN. Apply three drops across the front of the blade and one drop on each side at the heel of the blade. Wipe off excess oil with a soft cloth. Do not over-oil. Do not use hair oil, grease, or oil mixed with kerosene or solvents, as this can damage the motor.
Detachable Clipper Blade & Shaver Head (Models 9639, 9649, 9649LP, 9655N, 9179LP)
Not all kits include both a clipper blade and shaver head.
Removing:
- Ensure the clipper is turned to the "O/OFF" position before removing.
- Hold the clipper in both hands. Using thumbs, push the blade or shaver head away from the front of the clipper.
- The blade and shaver heads detach as one piece.
Attaching:
- Ensure the on/off switch is in the "O/OFF" position before attaching.
- Place the tab on the bottom of the blade or shaver into the notch on the bottom of the clipper housing.
- Secure by pivoting the attachment toward the clipper until it clicks into place.
Cleaning Foil Shaver (Models 9649, 9649LP Only)
Not all kits include a shaver head.
- Remove the cap. Press the two buttons on the side of the shaver attachment and pull off the foil head.
- Use the small cleaning brush to remove excess hair. Do not use the brush on foils or cutting bars.
- The foil attachment is rinseable; the clipper is NOT rinseable.
- To replace the foil head: Carefully re-attach it until you hear a click.
- If needed, remove cutting bars by holding their ends and gently lifting them up.
- To replace cutting bars: Hold their ends and gently press them back into place until they snap.
Cleaning Clipper Blades
- Use the small cleaning brush provided to remove excess hair and debris.
- Model 2240LP: Clipper and blades are NOT rinseable.
- Models 9639, 9649, 9649LP, 9655N, 9179LP: Detachable blades are rinseable; the clipper ISN'T.
- After cleaning, oil the blades as noted above.
Travel Lock (Model 9179LP Only)
Model 9179 clippers have a push-button on/off switch with a travel lock feature to prevent accidental activation during shipment and travel. To activate or deactivate, press and hold the on/off button for 3 seconds.
Taper Lever (Model 2240LP Only)
The taper lever adds versatility, allowing gradual changes in cutting closeness, ideal for blending and fading. "Up" Position = Closest Cut | "Down" Position = Longest Cut. If blades jam with hair, move the taper lever up and down several times to help free them.
Charging
- Initial Charge Time:
- Models 9639, 9649, 9655N: 3-5 hours for a full charge.
- Models 2240LP, 9649LP, 9179LP: 2 hours for a full charge.
- After the initial charge, the clipper can be "Quick Charged" for 15 minutes, providing enough power for one haircut.
- To charge, turn the clipper OFF and connect the charging plug to an outlet of the correct voltage.
- Charge Indicators:
- Models 9639, 9649, 9655N: The indicator light does not turn off or change color when fully charged. The light illuminates to show the charger is connected and plugged in. It does not indicate when recharging is needed.
- Models 2240LP, 9179LP, 9649LP: The indicator light is red while charging, green when fully charged or running, and flashes red when the battery is low.
- When not in use, the clipper can remain connected to the charging cord and plugged in to ensure maximum power. The charger is designed to prevent overcharging.
Storage
- Remove the charging cord from the clipper when not charging. Leaving it connected without being plugged in may drain the battery.
- Do not use the cord to pull the clipper. Keep the cord untwisted and unobstructed. Coil the cord and store the unit in its original box or case, away from children.
- Do not expose or store the clipper at temperatures below 0°C (32°F) or above 45°C (113°F). Avoid direct sunlight.
Troubleshooting
If your clipper does not seem to take a charge, check the following:
- Verify outlet operation by plugging in another appliance.
- Ensure the outlet is not connected to a switch that turns power off.
- Confirm the clipper is properly connected to the charging cord, all connections are secure, and the clipper switch is OFF (0).
- If your electricity is connected to a master power switch, disconnect the clipper from the charging cord when the master switch is off to prevent battery drain.
- If the clipper does not run when fully charged, turn it ON (I) and manually pinch or push the blades. Oil may have dried, causing them to stick temporarily.
Easy-to-Use Attachment Guards
Attachment guards help cut hair to a desired length by keeping blades at a set distance from the skin, ensuring even hair length. Each guard is numbered and indicates the resulting hair length. Always start with a longer guard and use a shorter one if needed. For an even "tapered" cut around the ears, use the LEFT and RIGHT tapered attachment guards. Ensure the on/off switch is OFF (0) before adding or removing guards. Not all kits include all guard types.
Adding Guards:
Hold the guard at a slight angle, placing the tips of the clipper blade into the slots of the guard fingers. Push down on the guard where the size number is located until it snaps into place.
Removing Guards:
Hold the top of the attachment guard. Place your thumb on the underside of the guard's tab and push up to remove it.
Ear Taper Guards:
The cutting length of ear taper guards ranges from 3/16" (#1-1/2) to 1/4" (#4).
- Right Ear: Attach the "R" RIGHT guard. Start BEHIND the right ear (shorter guard fingers closest to the ear). Move the clipper upward and around towards the front of the ear, repeating as necessary.
- Left Ear: Attach the "L" LEFT guard. Start BEHIND the left ear (shorter guard fingers closest to the ear). Move the clipper upward and around towards the front of the ear, repeating as necessary.
- Then, with the "R" guard still attached, start on the FRONT of the left ear (shorter guard fingers closest to the ear). Move the clipper upward and around towards the back of the ear, repeating as necessary.
- Finally, with the "L" guard still attached, start on the FRONT of the right ear (shorter guard fingers closest to the ear). Move the clipper upward and around towards the back of the ear, repeating as necessary.
