- Entrapment Warning: Proper patient assessment, monitoring, and equipment use are required. Variations in bed rail dimensions, mattress thickness, size, or density can increase entrapment risk. Visit FDA website (http://www.fda.gov) for risks. If entrapment risk is high, the bed MUST be in the flat position when unattended.
General Cautions:
- Bed rails may deform/break with excessive side pressure; they are not assist rails. Do not use bed rails as push handles.
- Bed rails are not for restraint purposes; consult a professional for alternative restraint means if needed.
- Trapeze units must be positioned near the center of the bed end.

- Improper use of accessories (restraints, side rails, trapeze) can cause injury or death. Consult professionals.
- If using optional side rails/extension kits, ensure they are properly secured.
- Individuals prone to rolling/climbing out may require alternative restraint.
- Use ONLY authorized Medline replacement mattresses and bed rails to prevent entrapment.
- Remove manual crank before performing electronic functions on semi/full electric beds.
- Ensure all parts are in the lowest position when disassembling.
Electrical Cautions:
- Never operate with a damaged cord or plug; call a qualified electrician.
- Connect only to a three-prong (grounding) outlet. Do not defeat grounding.
- Never plug into an outlet greater than 120 Volts AC.
- Keep cords away from heated surfaces.
- Ensure cables and cords are routed to prevent entanglement or pinching.
- Do not place pendant under or between objects.
- Do not open assemblies (motors, junction boxes, etc.); no user-serviceable parts.
- Be cautious with portable communications equipment due to potential Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Unplug if erratic behavior occurs.
- Do not use unauthorized parts, accessories, or adapters.
- Unplug the power cord BEFORE performing maintenance.
- Ensure cable plugs are secure after installing connectors into the junction box.
- DO NOT force connectors into the junction box.

Assembly
This procedure includes connecting sections, installing components, and activating functions.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to operate controls before assembly is complete to avoid damage or injury.
BARIATRIC BED ONLY: Two people recommended for assembly.
Connecting the Head and Foot Sections
- Place head end section on its right side, center mounting latches to the left.
- Place foot end section on its left side, center mounting rivets to the right.
- Position the foot end section (with two motors) to the left and the head end section (with one motor) to the right.
- The sections should be at a 130° angle to each other.
- Ensure the pull tube on the foot end section is positioned on the underside of the head end section's pan deck.
- Hook the TOP center mounting latch on the head end section to the TOP center mounting rivet on the foot end section.
- With one person holding the sections together, hook the BOTTOM center mounting latch on the head end section to the BOTTOM center mounting rivet on the foot end section. (May require lifting sections to align rivets and latches).
- Push the connected ends into a horizontal (straight) position while still on their sides.
Raising the Bed Ends
(FIGURE 5):
- Raise bed legs 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) by inserting the manual crank into the foot end gear box receptacle and turning clockwise.
- Insert crank into the head end receptacle and raise the head end to the correct height.
NOTE: Two people recommended. Headboard is taller than footboard.
Assembling the Bed Ends (Headboard/Footboard)
- Stand the headboard near the head spring.
- Grasp the head spring frame and raise it until the rivets on the corner plates align with the corner locks on the headboard.
- Tilt the headboard slightly backward to ease rivet insertion.
- The headboard will lock into place when returned to its upright position.
- Repeat for the footboard.
CAUTION: Use only provided casters. Incorrect casters may cause injury or damage.
NOTE: Position the two locking casters diagonally opposite each other.
Installing Casters
- Carefully lift bed ends approximately 5 inches (12.7 cm) and insert caster shafts into sockets.
- Lock casters by pushing DOWN on the side labeled "ON".
- Unlock casters by pushing DOWN on the side labeled "OFF".
NOTE: Locking casters may not prevent movement on slick surfaces.
Installing Frame Support Assemblies
WARNING: Frame support assemblies MUST be securely fastened before use.
NOTE: Two people recommended.
- Unfold a frame support assembly, noting the center mounting bracket and side support mounting brackets.
- Position the large mounting hole on a side support bracket over the rivet near the head end section.
- Pull the assembly toward the foot end section until the head end rivet slides into the small mounting hole of the side support bracket.
- Simultaneously, position the large mounting hole on the opposite frame support bracket over the rivet near the foot end section.
- Allow the assembly to hang from the two rivets. Ensure rivets are in the small mounting holes of the frame support assemblies.
- Rotate the center mounting bracket to align its mounting hole with the bed frame's mounting hole. (May require lifting the bed frame).
- Install and securely tighten the bolt through the aligned holes.
- Repeat for the opposite frame support assembly.
Drive Shaft Assembly Installation
The drive shaft consists of an inner shaft (with spring button) and an outer shaft (with positioning holes).
- Remove plastic caps from drive rod ends.
- Depress the spring button on the inner shaft and insert it into the outer shaft.
- Slide the inner shaft to the desired position and engage the spring button into a positioning hole.
- Connect one end of the drive shaft to the head end gear box.
- Connect the other end to the Hi/Lo motor output shaft.
- Connect the foot end gearbox output shaft to the Hi/Lo motor output shaft's spring-loaded coupler.
- Release the drive shaft spring-loaded coupler by pushing in and turning clockwise.
- Locate the Hi/Lo motor output shaft spring-loaded coupler.
- Release the Hi/Lo motor shaft spring-loaded coupler to connect with the foot end gearbox output shaft by pushing in and turning clockwise.
- The coupling will engage the foot end output shaft.
