Before Installing

Please read the System Smoke Detector Applications Guide for detailed information on detector spacing, placement, zoning, wiring, and special applications. Copies are available from System Sensor. Observe CAN/ULC S524 guidelines.

NOTICE: This manual should be left with the owner/user of this equipment.

IMPORTANT: Detectors used with these bases must be tested and maintained regularly following CAN/ULC S536 requirements. Clean detectors at least once a year.

General Information

The relay base is designed for intelligent systems, featuring Form C latching relay contacts for auxiliary function control. The relay offers two modes: short delay (60-100 msec activation time) and long delay (6-10 sec activation time). A shunt with pin headers on the base PC board selects the delay mode. The B224RB is factory-set to the short delay. To use the long delay, move the shunt to the adjacent pin headers (refer to Figures 2 and 6).

B224RBA Terminals

  1. NO (Normal Close): Terminal 1
  2. Common: Terminal 2
  3. Normal Open: Terminal 3
  4. Comm. Line In (-) and Out (-): Terminal 4
  5. Comm. Line In (+) and Out (+): Terminal 5

Mounting

Mount the mounting plate directly to an electrical box. The plate is compatible with 4-inch square (with/without plaster ring), 4-inch octagon, 3 1/2-inch octagon, single gang, and double gang junction boxes.

  1. Connect field wiring to terminals as shown in Figure 4.
  2. Attach the mounting plate to the junction box (see Figure 2).
  3. To mount the base, hook the tab on the base into the groove on the mounting plate.
  4. Swing the base into position to engage the product pins with the terminals on the mounting plate.
  5. Secure the base by tightening the mounting screws.
  6. Install a compatible smoke detector according to its installation manual.

Figure 1. Terminal Designation: Depicts a circular base with numbered terminals (1-5) arranged around the perimeter. Terminal 1 is labeled NC (Normal Close), 2 is Common, 3 is NO (Normal Open), and 4 & 5 are for communication lines.

Figure 2. Mounting the Base to an Electrical Box: Illustrates the process of attaching the base to a junction box. It shows the mounting plate, screws (not supplied), and the location of the relay activation shunt, indicating it can be moved to switch from short delay to long delay.

Installation Guidelines

All wiring must comply with applicable local codes and specific requirements of the local authority having jurisdiction, using proper wire sizes. Color-coded conductors for connecting smoke detectors to control panels and accessory devices are recommended to reduce wiring errors. Improper connections can hinder system response during a fire.

For signal wiring between interconnected detectors, use wire no smaller than 18 gauge (0.9 sq mm). Wire sizes up to 12 gauge (2.5 sq mm) are acceptable.

Consult control panel specifications for allowable loop resistance before wiring detector loops.

Wiring Instructions

WARNING: The base uses a latching relay that can change states due to mechanical shocks or jarring. While contacts are shipped open, they may close during transit. Connecting an auxiliary control circuit to closed relay contacts could cause unexpected or dangerous activation. Ensure relay contacts are open (by applying power to bases without sensor heads) before connecting auxiliary circuits.

To make wiring connections: strip approximately 3/8" (10 mm) of wire insulation, slide the wire under the clamping plate, and tighten the screw.

Check zone wiring for continuity, correct polarity, ground fault, and perform dielectric tests before installing detector heads.

A label on the base is for recording zone, address, and detector type, useful for setting detector addresses and verifying sensor types.

After all bases are wired, mounted, and loop wiring checked, install detector heads.

Tamper-Resist Feature: This feature prevents base removal without a tool. To activate, break the tab as shown in Figure 5A. To remove a detector with the feature activated, insert a small-bladed screwdriver into the slot from the top and press the lever down (Figure 5B), allowing counterclockwise rotation for removal. The feature can be defeated by removing the plastic lever, but it cannot be reactivated.

Figure 3: Shows two wiring configurations: 'THIS' (correct) and 'NOT THIS' (incorrect), illustrating proper and improper connections for the communication lines.

Figure 4. Wiring Diagram: Depicts the wiring connections for a listed compatible control panel to the base, including communication lines (Comm. (+) and Comm. (-)) and the SLC loop connections (SLC (+) and SLC (-)) to other intelligent devices. It also shows the relay terminals (1, 2, 3) and their functions (NC, Common, NO). It includes a note on Class A optional wiring.

Figure 5A. Activating the Tamper-Resist Feature: Illustrates breaking a tab at a dotted line by twisting towards the center of the base.

Figure 5B. Removing the Detector Head from the Base: Shows a slot on the base where a small-bladed screwdriver is inserted to push a plastic lever, allowing the detector to be rotated and removed.

Figure 6. Relay Activation Shunt: Shows the location of the shunt on the PC board and how moving it from the default 'SHORT DELAY' position to the adjacent pin headers switches the relay activation to 'LONG DELAY'.
