RØDE NT2000 Instruction Manual

Introduction

Thank you for investing in the RØDE NT2000 seamlessly variable studio condenser microphone.

RØDE is extremely proud of the NT2000. It is the world's first large diaphragm condenser studio microphone with seamlessly variable polar pattern, filter, and PAD controls conveniently located on the microphone body. It represents the culmination of many years of dedicated research into recording microphone technology.

The term 'art' is used because a studio microphone cannot be judged solely by electrical or acoustical measurements. While the NT2000 surpasses the technical specifications of superlative class microphones globally, RØDE believes that once you hear this remarkable transducer, you will agree that RØDE has created a new benchmark.

Please visit www.rodemic.com to register your microphone for a full ten-year warranty. While there, you can also find studio tips, techniques, and browse the comprehensive range of accessories for RØDE microphones.

Frequency Response and Polar Response

The document includes graphical representations of the microphone's performance:

  • Frequency Response Graphs: These show the microphone's sensitivity across the audible frequency spectrum (20Hz to 20kHz). One graph displays the standard response, while the other illustrates the effect of the High-Pass Filter (HPF) set at 150Hz with a 12dB/octave slope.
  • Polar Response Diagrams: These diagrams illustrate the microphone's directional pickup patterns at different frequencies. They show the sensitivity at various angles (0° to 360°) for the Omni, Cardioid, and Figure 8 patterns, typically at frequencies like 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 4000 Hz.

Features

  • Large 1" (25mm) HF1 gold sputtered capsule
  • Continuously variable polar pattern, from Omni to Cardioid to Figure 8, controlled on the microphone

Accessories

The following accessories are available for the NT2000:

  • SM2 shock mount
  • RC1 carry case
  • WS2 wind shield (optional)

Using the NT2000

Selecting the Polar Pattern

The polar pattern, or 'pick-up' area, of the microphone can be adjusted by moving the top dial on the microphone. The gold dot on the front of the NT2000 indicates the primary pick-up area for the cardioid pattern.

Using the PAD

The PAD control, adjusted by the lower dial, reduces the input level to the microphone's pre-amplifier. The dial ranges from 0 (no reduction) to -10dB. A setting of -3dB reduces the level by 50%. This control is useful for recording loud sound sources (like drums or amplifiers) to prevent overloading the pre-amplifier.

Using the High-Pass Filter

The High-Pass Filter (HPF), adjusted by the middle dial, controls bass frequencies, acting as a 'bass cut'. It reduces the selected bass frequency and all frequencies below it. The dial ranges from 20Hz to 150Hz. When set to the far left, there is no reduction in bass frequencies. When set to the far right (150Hz), the level is dropped by 3dB at 150Hz and below. This is useful for reducing unwanted low frequencies like traffic noise or floor vibrations, or for creative vocal effects.

To set the HPF, listen to the source while adjusting the filter. For vocals, start with the filter fully counter-clockwise and gradually move it clockwise until the desired sound is achieved. Turn it back slightly to a point where the difference is no longer audible for an optimal setting, especially considering the NT2000's wide frequency response below 20Hz.

General Usage

  • Connect all cables before applying power to the microphone. Never remove the microphone cable while power is connected.
  • The NT2000 requires P48 or P24 phantom power. If your mixer or preamp does not provide this, an external phantom power supply is needed.
  • Ensure your phantom power supply provides the correct voltage; insufficient voltage can reduce dynamic range and performance. RØDE strongly suggests using a reputable, high-quality power supply, as damage from faulty supplies is not covered by the warranty.
  • Achieving the desired sound requires experimentation with microphone technique. Start with channel EQ set to 'OFF' or 'FLAT'. Experiment with microphone placement and room acoustics (using reflective or absorbent panels) before applying EQ or effects.

Storing the NT2000

  • After use, remove the NT2000 from its shock mount, wipe it with a dry, soft cloth, and place it in its protective case.
  • Use the supplied moisture-absorbent crystals at the head of the microphone to absorb moisture.
  • When the crystals turn pink, they need drying. Place them in an oven at 100-150°C for approximately ten minutes. They will turn blue when ready for reuse.

Notes

This section provides blank diagrams for you to record settings you wish to recreate later. It is important to remember that room acoustics also significantly affect the sound.

The blank diagrams are structured like the microphone's control panel, allowing you to note settings for:

  • Polar Pattern Control Dial
  • PAD Control Dial
  • HPF Control Dial

Each diagram includes fields for 'Title:' and 'Date:' to help organize your notes.

Warranty

All RØDE microphones are warranted for one year from the date of purchase. This can be extended to a full ten years by registering online at www.rodemic.com.

The warranty covers parts and labour for repairs during the warranty period. It excludes defects caused by normal wear and tear, modification, shipping damage, or failure to use the microphone as per the instruction guide.

If you experience any problems or have questions, first contact the dealer who sold you the microphone. If factory-authorized service is required, the dealer will arrange the return. RØDE has an extensive distributor/dealer network, but if you have difficulty obtaining advice or assistance, you may contact RØDE directly.
