Safety Warnings
Riding an electric motor bike presents potential risks and requires caution. Like any riding product, it has inherent hazards such as falling off or riding into a dangerous situation. Riders can be seriously injured or die even when using safety equipment. Ride at your own risk and use common sense.
Parental and Adult Responsibility and Supervision Necessary: This manual contains important safety information. It is your responsibility to review this information and ensure that all riders understand all warnings, cautions, instructions, and safety topics. Ensure that young riders can safely and responsibly use these products. Razor recommends periodically reviewing and reinforcing this information with younger riders and inspecting and maintaining the product to ensure safety.
Age and Weight Restrictions:
- SX500/MX500: Not for children under 14 years or heavier than 175 lb (79 kg).
- MX650: Not for children under 16 years or heavier than 220 lb (100 kg).
These recommendations reflect expected maturity, skills, and physical size. Always ensure a rider can fit comfortably on the product. Parental decisions should be based on the child's maturity, skill, and ability to follow rules. Do not disregard Razor's recommendations or permit younger children to ride.
Acceptable Riding Practices and Conditions:
- Always obey local laws and regulations.
- Keep safely away from cars and motor vehicle traffic. Use only where allowed and with caution.
- Do not activate the speed control unless on the motor bike in a safe, outdoor environment.
- Normal powered top speed is approximately 15 mph (24 km/h) for SX500/MX500 and 17 mph (27 km/h) for MX650, affected by rider weight, inclines, tire inflation, and battery charge. Avoid excessive speeds.
- Maintain a hold on the handlebars at all times.
- Do not touch the brakes or motor immediately after riding, as these parts can become very hot.
- Ride defensively and watch for potential obstacles. Avoid pedestrians, skaters, skateboards, scooters, bikes, children, and animals.
- Use on flat, dry surfaces like pavement or level ground without loose debris (sand, leaves, rocks, gravel). Avoid wet, slick, bumpy, uneven, or rough surfaces. Do not ride in mud, ice, puddles, or water. Avoid sharp bumps, drainage grates, and sudden surface changes.
- Do not attempt stunts or tricks. These motor bikes are not built to withstand abuse from misuse like jumping or curb grinding.
- Never allow more than one person to ride the motor bike.
- Do not ride at night or when visibility is limited.
- Never use near steps or swimming pools.
- Keep hands, feet, hair, clothing, and other articles away from moving parts, wheels, or drive train chain.
- Never use headphones, a cell phone, or text while riding.
- Never hitch a ride with a vehicle.
- Do not ride in wet or icy weather. Never immerse the motor bike in water, as electrical and drive components can be damaged. Avoid using indoors on surfaces like carpet or flooring.
Proper Riding Attire: Always wear proper protective equipment: an approved safety helmet (chin strap securely buckled), elbow pads, and kneepads. Adjusting the Brakes
Tools required: 5 mm Allen wrench
- To adjust brake cable play, thread the brake lever adjuster in or out 1/4 to 1/2 turn until desired adjustment is attained.
- If the brake has too much slack, loosen the rear anchor bolt with a 5 mm Allen wrench and pull the brake wire tighter. The distance of the brake wire between the end of the cable and the anchor bolt should be between 37 mm and 44 mm.
- If the brake rotor is dragging on the brake pads, use fingers to twist the caliper adjuster in either direction until the rotor is centered between the pads.
WARNING: The brake can cause the motor bike to skid, throwing the rider. Practice in an open area to become familiar with brake function. Avoid skidding to a stop.
Testing the Brakes: Squeeze levers to increase pressure on the brake. Levers have a cable adjuster for cable stretch and fine-tuning lever movement. If brakes are not engaging properly, follow adjustment instructions.
Replacing the Fuse
WARNING: To prevent shock, follow instructions carefully.
- Remove the seat fairing and battery cover to locate the 3 fuse boxes attached to the batteries.
- Check all 3 fuses. Remove any damaged or burnt-out fuse and replace with a new one of equal amperage. Note: Amperage is located on top of the fuse.
- Close the fuse cover and reattach the seat fairing.
Replacing the Chain and Tire
Tools required: Phillips screwdriver and two (2) 19 mm wrenches.
- Loosen screws and remove chain guard.
- Using two 19 mm wrenches, loosen both axle nuts.
- Push the chain tensioner down to loosen the chain and remove the chain from the wheel sprocket and motor sprocket. Push and remove the wheel downward. Note: Your hands will get greasy.
- Install the new chain or wheel by slipping the chain around the axle. Slide the axle into the slots on the frame. Slide the chain tensioner down and maneuver the chain onto the rear sprocket and motor sprocket.
- Reattach the chain guard. Test ride and check. Readjust as needed.
Hardware Sequence:
- Right Side (Throttle): 16-1 Nut, 16-2 Washer, Frame, 16-3 Spacer
- Left Side (Brake): 16-1 Nut, 16-2 Washer, Frame, 16-3 Spacer
Spoke Tension
- Verify spoke tension by shaking each spoke. Spokes should not be loose from the hub. Look for play where spoke flanges attach to the hub. Try to turn nipples by hand; they should not spin freely. If any spoke is loose, all spokes must be checked and tightened with a spoke wrench.
- Start with the spoke closest to the tire valve stem. Tighten each nipple, in sequence, exactly 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Continue tightening all spokes, no more than 1/2 turn, in sequence, until all spokes are tight. Note: More than a 1/2 turn each can distort and damage the wheel.
WARNING: Regularly check spoke tension and retighten when loose. If in doubt, ask an experienced mechanic to inspect spokes.
Chain and Sprocket
Maintain proper chain alignment. The wheel must not be skewed. If the chain is noisy or running rough, check lubrication, tension, and alignment of the sprockets.
WARNING: To avoid a pinch or injury, keep fingers away from moving sprockets and chain.
