Safety Precautions

⚠️ Danger High Voltage

DO NOT touch any terminals or connectors to avoid electric shock.

? Eye Protection Must Be Worn

ALWAYS wear protective clothing and eyeglasses while working with the Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery.

? Emergency Eye Wash

Any uncovered battery material (electrolyte/powder) on skin or in eyes must be flushed with clean water immediately. Seek medical attention. Spills on clothing should be rinsed with water.

? Caution Risk Of Fire Highly Flammable Material

Terminals of the Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery are always live. DO NOT place tools on them. DO NOT short circuit or use outside of specified electrical ratings.

General Safety Precautions

  • Use appropriately sized circuit breakers, fuses, or disconnects certified by electricians or authorities to protect system equipment. The Battery Management System (BMS) protects cells from over-charge, over-discharge, and over-current, but does not protect the entire system from severe electrical conditions.
  • Verify polarity before connecting wiring. Reverse polarity WILL destroy the battery.
  • DO NOT short-circuit battery terminals. This can cause amperage bursts, irreversible damage, and potential explosion.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when working on the battery.
  • ONLY connect identical batteries in parallel or series for optimal performance.
  • If the battery shuts off due to low charge, disconnect it from equipment to eliminate parasitic loads and charge it immediately.
  • It is highly recommended to pair the battery with low voltage disconnect devices in the system setup.

Battery Installation

Safe and reliable installation requires trained and certified technicians. This section is a guideline only.

Steps:

  1. Mounting Site: Install in a clean, cool, dry location, free from water, oil, or dirt to prevent current leakage, self-discharge, or short-circuiting.
  2. Protective Gear: Wear protective clothing and eyeglasses.
  3. Check Battery: Inspect for visible damage (cracks, dents, deformation). Ensure connector contacts are clean, dry, and free of corrosion. Reverse polarity WILL destroy the battery; use a multimeter to determine proper polarity.
  4. Cable Sizing: Use high-stranded copper, heavy-gauge cables to handle loads. Maintain identical cable lengths.
  5. Install Terminals: Verify battery polarity. Always finish negative terminals before positive ones. Connect batteries in series or parallel as needed.
  6. Connect to Devices: Connect the battery to other system components.
  7. Tighten Connections: Ensure connections are secure. Over-tightening can cause terminal breakage; loose connections can cause terminal meltdown or fire.

Diagrams:

For Batteries in Parallel

Diagram shows two batteries connected in parallel. Positive terminals are connected together and to a battery fuse, then to an inverter, DC-DC charger, DC distribution panel, and charge controller. Negative terminals are connected together.

For Batteries in Series

Diagram shows two batteries connected in series. The positive terminal of the first battery is connected to the negative terminal of the second battery. The negative terminal of the first battery connects to the system (via fuse, inverter, etc.), and the positive terminal of the second battery connects to the system.

Battery Operation

  • Batteries may arrive at a partial state of charge. Fully charge before first use.
  • Standard Charging: Charge at 0.5C constant current until 14.4V, then constant voltage at 14.4V, tapering current. Charging complete when current tapers to 0.05C. Safe charging temperatures: 0°C to 55°C (32°F to 131°F). Approx. 2.5 hours.
  • Standard Discharging: Discharge at 0.5C constant current until 10V. Safe discharging temperatures: -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).

Battery Storage

  • Charge to 30%-50% for storage. Store in an open, well-ventilated, dry, clean area at around 25°C (77°F).
  • Long storage can degrade performance. Charge at least every three months to prevent over-discharge.

Battery Management System (BMS)

The BMS protects the battery from over-discharge and short circuits by shutting it down. In such cases, the battery may show 0V. Activate the battery using an external charger with lithium battery activation. Contact Renogy Tech Support at (909)287-7111 for BMS information.
