New technology allows route adjustment to Outdoor activity and user profile.
Lisbon, August 2, 2012 – Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), a global leader in satellite navigation solutions*, today announced the availability of ActiveRouting – a highly innovative technology integrated into the latest European map update and Garmin devices. ActiveRouting is a pioneering feature in recreational mapping, enabling the planning of specific routes perfectly suited to the outdoor activities in question, whether they are hiking, walking, mountaineering, cycling, or mountain biking (BTT).
Based on a pre-selected profile, via PC or GPS device, this functionality recommends a route fully adjusted to the activity, which can then be further personalized to the user's needs. Users can define different levels of challenge and difficulty, for example. Solutions integrating high-quality topographic maps, featuring ActiveRouting technology, are designed to provide precise information on existing routes and significant points of interest. Among other things, users can quickly discover the best cycling route networks or the most popular trails for hiking enthusiasts. The integration of features provided by ActiveRouting technology offers sports enthusiasts and adventurers even more innovative and value-added tools, allowing them to design routes tailored to their profile and objectives, significantly simplifying the planning of all their trips.
"ActiveRouting technology significantly enhances our offering, and we eagerly anticipate its upcoming availability for Portugal, as it is a unique technology, and we are an early adopter market for technologies. Each user has their own pace, a unique profile, and very specific objectives they wish to achieve. This solution will allow them to design and adjust every challenge to their image and needs," said Mariana Dias, Marcoms Manager at Garmin Portugal. "This tool is set to revolutionize the recreational mapping sector, and Garmin is proud to be at the forefront once again, ensuring our customers receive the best that technology has to offer."
Route Tailored to the Outdoor Activity Practiced
What if your Garmin GPS device and maps could recommend a personalized route for the outdoor activity you planned for the weekend?
This new offering from Garmin makes exactly that possible. ActiveRouting technology is the ideal partner for any hike, run, walk, BTT event, or cycling race, informing the user about the best route for any of these and other activities. The planning for each activity will not only be better adjusted to each challenge but can also be planned and designed according to each user's preferences. Why?
Beyond ensuring a user planning a simple hike doesn't end up on a trail designed for BTT, ActiveRouting allows for defining the chosen route's level of challenge and difficulty. The user simply needs to pre-define their desired profile for the most personalized results possible.
If the goal is to cover a route on foot that quickly leads to the destination, the presented result will involve a flat route, without major obstacles. However, if a more demanding hike is intended, or a mountaineering challenge, the calculated route will incorporate a steeper, more difficult path with more challenges and barriers. For cycling enthusiasts, the route can also be fully personalized according to the users' objectives: a road route for cyclists, or a trail with a significantly higher difficulty level for those who enjoy BTT.

Perfect Route Planning
In BaseCamp, Garmin's free online trip planning software, specific route profiles can be designed, which can also be done on compatible GPS devices. To help users map out the perfect route for their travel plans, specific mapping profiles are available. These can be chosen from pedestrian activities (such as walks, hikes, or mountaineering), or cycling activities (road cycling, touring, or BTT). Various difficulty levels (flat or more mountainous roads) and specific route conditions (street, road, trail, etc.) can also be defined. All these variables will influence the final results calculated by Garmin devices. Regardless of the choice, ActiveRouting will always recommend the perfect route for each user.
Specific Map Visualization and Trail Search
To make navigation via a Garmin device even simpler and more comfortable, ActiveRouting highlights specific routes and some information with a different color, which depends on the chosen activity. For example, if a user selects cycling, all cycling routes will be highlighted. Furthermore, ActiveRouting also allows searching for specific popular cycling and hiking routes. Simply enter the trail name, and the GPS will display it on the screen and guide you there.
High-Quality Topographic Maps
The new ActiveRouting tool brings the latest recreational map solutions from Garmin, such as TOPO Germany 2012 Pro, Garmin TransAlpin 2012 Pro (includes the transalpine region of Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Slovenia), and TOPO Austria v3. Updates for maps of France, Italy, and Norway will be available soon. The high-quality topographic map is available at a 1:25,000 scale and offers important tourist information, specifically routes for cycling and hiking. It includes Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and contours with 20m intervals, as well as points of interest (POI) for business / tourism / outdoor / entertainment, geographical locations, mountainous areas, points of interest in cities, among other recreational POIs. The updates integrate with Garmin BaseCamp trip planning software, which can be downloaded for free from the Garmin website.
