How to Install Your Midland Mobile CB
This transceiver is designed for any 12-volt negative ground system vehicle. Ensure your vehicle has a negative ground system before installation. If unsure, consult your vehicle's manual or a qualified technician.
Mechanical Mounting
- Select a mounting location that is safe and convenient, ensuring it does not interfere with driving, airbags, or vehicle controls.
- Use the provided mounting bracket as a template to mark screw hole locations. Drill 1/8" holes for the screws.
- Attach the bracket to the dash using the provided Phillips head sheet metal screws.
- Position the main unit between the bracket arms and adjust the angle for optimal comfort.
- Secure the unit using the retention knobs, with rubber washers for a snug fit.
Power Wiring (Negative Ground Only)
- Disconnect the negative lead from the vehicle's battery to prevent short circuits.
- Connect the positive (RED WIRE) with the in-line fuse holder to a suitable power source such as the fuse block, cigarette lighter, or directly to the positive battery post. Connecting to the accessory terminal ensures the CB turns off with the ignition.
- Connect the ground (BLACK WIRE) directly to the vehicle's metal frame for optimal performance. Ensure a solid metal-to-metal connection.
Installation of Microphone Hanger
Mount the microphone hanger bracket to the vehicle dash, the side of the radio, or another convenient location using the provided mounting holes.
Antenna
How to Select, Position, Install and Tune the Right Antenna
Choose between full-length whip and loaded whip antennas. Consult your Midland CB dealer for advice on the best antenna type and mount for your vehicle.
Antenna Location Tips:
- Mount as high on the vehicle as possible.
- If possible, mount in the center of the chosen surface.
- Route antenna cables away from noise sources like the ignition system.
- Ensure a solid metal-to-metal ground.
- Protect antenna cables from damage.
Antenna Installation
Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions carefully. Warning: Never operate the CB radio without an antenna or with a broken antenna cable, as this can damage the transmitter circuitry.
Safety Notice: The antenna must be installed at least 8 inches (20 cm) from all persons and not co-located with any other antenna or transmitter.
Tuning Your Antenna
Some antennas are factory tuned. Performance can be improved by adjusting the antenna length using a Standing Wave Radio (SWR) meter. Refer to the antenna manufacturer's manual for specific procedures. An SWR meter can be purchased separately, or your Midland CB dealer can assist.
Factors Affecting CB and Weather Scan Range
Factors influencing CB and Weather Scan range are similar to those affecting AM/FM broadcast signals:
- Terrain: Hills, valleys, and buildings can interrupt signals. Flat, open country provides the best performance.
- Weather: Atmospheric disturbances like thunderstorms or heavy snow, and sunspots, can reduce range.
Noise
Common noise sources include the ignition system and electric fuel pumps. If noise is present when the ignition is off, it may be an ignition system issue. Ensure the CB radio chassis is properly grounded. In extreme cases, additional grounding may be required.
1001LWX Front Panel Features and Operation
Image Description: A front view of the Midland 1001LWX CB radio showing various controls and the LCD display.
- ON/OFF Volume Knob: Turns the unit on/off and adjusts audio volume.
- Microphone Connector: Connects the microphone.
- CB/PA Button: Switches between CB mode and Public Address (PA) mode for an external speaker.
- ANL ON/OFF Button: Activates the Automatic Noise Limiter to reduce ignition noise.
- Weather (WX) Scan/CB Button: Activates weather channel scanning. The unit scans for the strongest weather broadcast signal. Pressing the microphone PTT button while scanning will cause the unit to scan for another channel. The unit will rescan channels each time this button is used to listen to weather. CB/PA function is unavailable in weather scan mode.
- Squelch Control: Eliminates receiver background noise. Adjust clockwise until noise disappears. Further rotation increases the signal threshold required to be heard.
- RF Gain: Optimizes reception in strong signal areas by reducing gain (counter-clockwise rotation).
- Channel Knob: Selects one of the 40 CB channels, indicated on the LED readout.
Back Panel Features and Operation
Image Description: A rear view of the Midland 1001LWX CB radio showing various connectors.
- Antenna Connector: Connects a standard 50-ohm CB antenna.
- External Speaker Jack: Connects an external speaker (8 ohm, 5 watt recommended). The internal speaker is bypassed when an external speaker is connected.
- PA Jack: Connects an optional PA speaker (8 ohm, 5 watt recommended) for public address announcements.
- DC 13.8V POWER Cord: Connects to the power source with an in-line 2 Amp fuse.
How to Operate Your Transceiver
- Rotate the ON/OFF Volume control clockwise to power on the unit.
- Adjust the Squelch control fully counter-clockwise to hear noise.
- Adjust the Volume to a comfortable listening level.
- Rotate the Squelch control clockwise until the background noise just disappears.
- Select the desired channel using the Channel Knob.
- To transmit, press the PTT bar on the microphone. Hold the microphone 2-3 inches from your lips and speak normally.
- To receive, release the PTT bar.
Warning: Do not attempt internal adjustments. Modifications must be performed by qualified personnel to comply with FCC regulations.
