Elektron Digitone Keys Quick Guide
Thank you for purchasing Digitone Keys. The Digitone Keys represents Elektron's vision of how FM synthesis can be revitalized and modernized by combining FM sound generation with a classic subtractive synthesis signal flow. It allows users to transition from complex sounds to mellow soundscapes quickly. Digitone Keys features multiple FM algorithms with carefully selected parameters, powerful filters, an intuitive Elektron sequencer, and stellar effects. The velocity and pressure-sensitive keyboard, along with hands-on controls, enable enhanced performance. This Quick Guide covers basic functions; for comprehensive details, refer to the Digitone Keys User Manual available at www.elektron.se.

Getting Started with Digitone Keys
Setting Up and Starting
Ensure the Digitone Keys is placed on a stable support with sufficient space for cables. Switch off all devices before connecting the Digitone Keys to other equipment.
- Plug the supplied DC adapter into a power outlet and connect the small plug to the 12V DC In on the Digitone Keys.
- Connect OUTPUT L/R from the Digitone Keys to your mixer or amplifier.
- To control the Digitone Keys from a computer, connect a USB cable between the computer and the USB connector of the Digitone Keys.
- For MIDI control, connect the MIDI OUT port of your controller device to the MIDI IN port of the Digitone Keys. To control other devices using Digitone Keys, connect the MIDI OUT port of the Digitone Keys to the MIDI IN port of the device you want to control.
- Connect an audio source to INPUT L/R or via USB if you want to process external audio.
- Switch on all units. Press the POWER switch on the Digitone Keys to turn it on.
Changing Sounds
Press the [SOUND BROWSER] key. Use the LEVEL/DATA knob to scroll through the list of Sounds. Press the LEVEL/DATA knob to load a Sound to the active track.
Playing the Factory Preset Patterns
The Digitone Keys includes preset patterns and Sounds. To explore them:
- Press [BANK], then press [TRIG 9] to select bank A. The screen displays "BANK A : SELECT PTN".
- Press [TRIG 1] to select the first pattern of bank A.
- Press [PLAY] to listen to pattern A01.
- Press [PTN], then press [TRIG 2] to select pattern A02, and so on. New patterns start when the previous one finishes. White [TRIG] keys indicate patterns with data; a red [TRIG] key shows the active pattern; unlit [TRIG] keys indicate empty patterns.
Muting the Tracks
Mute or unmute individual tracks or all tracks simultaneously. Press [FUNC] + [T1-4] to mute a track. Press [FUNC] + [T1-4] again to unmute.
Tempo
To change the BPM setting, press the [TEMPO] key to open the TEMPO menu. Use the LEVEL/DATA knob to adjust the tempo.
The User Interface
The screen displays all necessary information for real-time interaction and editing. The eight DATA ENTRY knobs control parameters shown on the screen, which vary based on the selected parameter page. The main interface screen typically shows the SYN1 page, displaying bank and pattern information, pattern name, transpose values, tempo, track parameters controlled by the knobs, FM algorithm (on SYN1/SYN2 pages), track volume level, and track number/type (Synth or MIDI).
Parameter Editing
Use the DATA ENTRY knobs to change track parameter values. Knob positions correspond to their screen locations. Pressing down the DATA ENTRY knob while turning adjusts parameters in larger increments. Press DATA ENTRY knob + [NO] to reset a parameter to its default value. Press and hold a [PARAMETER] key to view exact parameter values on that page.
The Sequencer
The sequencer stores information in patterns, controlling the playback of synth and MIDI tracks through entered trigs. Trigs are sequencer events that trigger actions.
Trigs and Trig Types
Two types of trigs are available: Note trigs (trigger notes on synth and MIDI tracks) and Lock trigs (trigger parameter locks without notes). Lock trigs can be added on any sequencer step.
Pattern Recording Modes
The Digitone Keys offers three main modes for inputting trigs: GRID RECORDING, LIVE RECORDING, and STEP RECORDING. To create a new pattern, select an empty pattern slot in a bank.
Grid Recording Mode
Compose by using the [KEYBOARD] and [TRIG] keys to add trigs to the pattern grid.
- Select a track ([TRACK 1-4]) and press [RECORD] to enter GRID RECORDING mode (indicated by a lit [RECORD] key).
- Use the [TRIG] keys to place note trigs. Use [TRIG] + [KEYBOARD] to add note trigs with specific note values or chords. Press [FUNC] + [TRIG] to add a lock trig on any step. Press a [TRIG] key again to remove a trig.
- Select another track and add trigs.
- Press [PLAY] to listen to the sequence.
Live Recording Mode
Input trigs in real time by playing the [KEYBOARD] and [TRIG] keys, or by turning DATA ENTRY knobs for lock trigs.
- Hold [RECORD] and press [PLAY] to enter LIVE RECORDING mode (sequencer starts, [RECORD] key flashes red).
- Press [KEYBOARD] or [TRIG] keys, and turn DATA ENTRY knobs to enter trigs in real time. The pressed [TRIG] key determines the note pitch.
- Press [PLAY] to exit LIVE RECORDING mode while the sequencer continues. Press [RECORD] while in LIVE RECORDING mode to activate GRID RECORDING mode.
Step Recording Mode
A quick method for placing trigs. Insert notes by pressing [TRIG] keys or [KEYBOARD] (or via external MIDI). The sequencer captures the note and advances to the next step.
- Press [RECORD] + [STOP] to enter STEP RECORDING mode ([RECORD] key double-blinks red).
- Press a [TRIG] key to select the active step to start adding trigs.
- Play the [KEYBOARD] or press [FUNC] + [TRIG] to add a note trig. The active step advances automatically.
- To remove a trig or add a rest, press the [TRIG] key for that step and then press [NO].
Parameter Locks
Parameter locks allow each sequencer trig to have unique parameter values, such as pitch, velocity, or length for note trigs. All parameters on the PARAMETER pages can be parameter locked.
