Heart Rate Monitoring

Heart Rate Chest Strap

Using the provided heart rate transmitter chest strap allows continuous heart rate monitoring during workouts.

To put on the chest strap:

  1. Attach the transmitter to the elastic chest strap.
  2. Secure the strap around your chest with the transmitter oriented upward, just below the chest muscles.
  3. Lift the transmitter off your chest and moisten the two grooved electrode areas on the back.
  4. Check that the wet electrode areas are firmly against your skin.

The transmitter sends your heart rate to the machine's receiver, displaying Beats Per Minute (BPM).

Care: Always remove the transmitter before cleaning the strap. Clean the chest strap regularly with mild soap and water, and dry thoroughly. Residual sweat and moisture can drain the battery. Dry and wipe clean the transmitter after each use. Do not use abrasives or chemicals like steel wool or alcohol.

If the console does not display a heart rate value, check strap contact with skin, moisten if necessary, and ensure the transmitter is oriented correctly. If issues persist, contact your Nautilus Representative.

Before discarding a chest strap, remove the battery and dispose of it according to local regulations.

Remote Heart Rate Monitor (Contact Sensors)

Monitoring heart rate is crucial for controlling exercise intensity. Contact Heart Rate (CHR) sensors are installed on the handlebars. The console can also read telemetry HR signals from a compatible chest strap transmitter (4.5kHz - 5.5kHz range).

Note: The chest strap must be an uncoded heart rate strap from Polar Electro or an uncoded POLAR® compatible model. Coded straps (e.g., POLAR® OwnCode®) will not work.

If you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, consult your doctor before using a wireless chest strap.

NOTICE: To prevent interference with the telemetry HR receiver, do not place any personal electronic devices in the left side of the media tray.

Using Contact Heart Rate (CHR) Sensors:

To use CHR sensors, place your hands comfortably around the stainless steel parts of the handlebars, ensuring both top and bottom sensors are touched with firm but not tight pressure. Both hands must make contact for the console to detect a pulse. After four stable pulse signals, your initial pulse rate will be shown. Do not move your hands for 10-15 seconds for validation.

Factors Influencing HR Detection:

If your heart rate signal seems erratic, wipe your hands and the sensors and try again.

Heart Rate Calculations and Zones

Maximum heart rate typically decreases with age. At-rest heart rate is influenced by endurance training.

The Heart Rate table provides an estimate of effective Heart Rate Zones (HRZ) for fat burning and cardiovascular improvement. Individual HRZ may vary.

The most efficient fat-burning procedure involves starting at a slow pace and gradually increasing intensity until your heart rate reaches 50-70% of your maximum heart rate. Maintain this pace for over 20 minutes.

The graph below is a guideline for suggested target heart rates based on age. Consult your physician for your individual target heart rate zone.

Heart Rate BPM (beats per minute) Graph:

A graph shows Maximum Heart Rate and Target Heart Rate Zone (for optimum fat-burning) across age groups from 20-24 to 70+.

Example values from graph:

Note: As with all exercises, use your best judgment when increasing exercise time or intensity.

Remote Resistance Controls

The remote resistance controls are located on the upper handlebar arms. The right arm has a Resistance Increase () key, and the left arm has a Resistance Decrease () key. These function identically to the console buttons.

Operations

What to Wear

Wear rubber-soled athletic shoes and exercise clothing that allows free movement.

How Often Should You Exercise

Consult a physician before starting an exercise program. Stop exercising if you feel pain or tightness in your chest, become short of breath, or feel faint. Contact your doctor before using the machine again. Use computer-calculated values for reference only. Heart rate displayed is an approximation and for reference only.

Seat Adjustment

Correct seat placement ensures exercise efficiency, comfort, and reduces injury risk.

  1. With a Pedal in the forward position, center the ball of your foot over the center of it. Your leg should be bent slightly at the knee.
  2. If your leg is too straight or your foot cannot touch the Pedal, move the seat down. If your leg is bent too much, move the seat up.

⚠️ Step off the bike before you adjust the seat.

Loosen and pull the adjustment knob on the seat tube. Adjust the seat to the desired height. Release the adjustment knob to engage the locking pin. Be sure that the pin is fully engaged and fully tighten the knob.

⚠️ Do not set the Seat Post position higher than the stop mark (STOP) on the tube.

To move the seat closer to or away from the console, loosen the seat slider adjustment knob and pull down. Slide the seat forward or rearward to the desired position. Release the adjustment knob to engage the locking pin. Be sure that the pin is fully engaged and fully tighten the knob.

Foot Position / Pedal Strap Adjustment

Pedals with straps provide secure footing.

  1. Put the ball of each foot on the Pedals.
  2. Rotate the Pedals until one can be reached.
  3. Fasten the strap over the shoe.
  4. Repeat for the other foot. Be sure toes and knees point directly forward for maximum Pedal efficiency. Pedal straps can be left in position for subsequent workouts.

Fitness Test Program

The Fitness Test measures improvements in physical fitness by comparing power output (in watts) to heart rate. As fitness improves, power output increases at a given heart rate.

Note: The Console must be able to read heart rate from CHR sensors or HRM to work correctly. Start the test from the FEEDBACK category.

The test prompts you to select a fitness level: Beginner ("BEG") or Advanced ("ADV"). The Console uses User Profile Age and Weight to calculate a Fitness Score.

Start working out and hold the Heart Rate Sensors. The intensity slowly increases until your heart rate reaches the "Test Zone" (near 75% of maximum heart rate). The machine holds this intensity for 3 minutes for stabilization. The Console then measures heart rate and power output, computing a "Fitness Score" based on this data, age, and weight.

Note: Fitness Test scores should only be compared to your previous scores, not to other User Profiles.

Recovery Test Program

Recovery Test shows how quickly your heart recovers from exercise to a resting state. Improved recovery indicates increasing fitness.

Note: The Console must be able to read heart rate from CHR sensors or HRM to work correctly.

From an elevated heart rate, select the Recovery Test Program. The Console will show "STOP EXERCISING" and the goal will count down. Stop exercising but continue to grip the contact heart rate sensors. After 5 seconds, the display will show "RELAX" and count down to 00:00. Your heart rate is shown for the entire minute. You must grip the sensors for the duration of the test if not using a Remote Heart Rate Monitor.

The console calculates your recovery score: Recovery Score = Your heart rate at 1:00 minus your heart rate at 00:00. A higher score indicates quicker recovery and improving fitness.

If no heart rate signal is detected, the Console shows "NEED HEART RATE" and the program ends.

Helpful Tip: For a more relevant score, obtain a steady heart rate for 3 minutes before starting the Recovery Program, ideally in the Manual program.

Heart Rate Control (HRC) Workout Programs

HRC programs let you set a heart rate goal. The program monitors your heart rate (BPM) from CHR sensors or a HRM chest strap and adjusts the workout to keep your heart rate in the selected zone.

Note: The Console must be able to read heart rate for HRC programs to work correctly. Target Heart Rate programs use your age and other User information to set Heart Rate Zone values.
