Unpacking and Setting Up
CAUTION: The CD player 089 is shipped inside a plastic protective cover. Make sure that children do not play with it to avoid the danger of suffocation.
Unpacking
To avoid damaging the housing, please do not use pointed or sharp tools to open the box. Please make sure that the content of the box is complete. If something is missing or you notice any damage while unpacking, do not hook up the unit. Instead, contact your authorized dealer.
Content of boxes
The two boxes should contain the following:
- 1 box with the CD player 089
- 1 CD clamp
- 1 AC power cord
- 1 Remote control
- 1 owner's manual
Packaging
We recommend to keep the original packing in case the unit needs to be shipped in the future.
Setting up
Too low or too high temperatures may cause damage inside of the CD player. Therefore we recommend you leave the unit to adapt to room temperature, before using it for the first time.
Carefully remove the unit from its packaging and set it up in an appropriate location. To protect the 089 from overheating make sure that the location offers sufficient air circulation around the unit. Also, avoid excessive exposure to sun, dust and humidity.
Please make sure that your desired location for the preamp is stable enough to carry its weight.
Ventilation ducts and openings in the housing serve to keep the unit cool. They must not be covered up with magazines, table cloth, curtains etc.
If the 089 has to be operated in an extremely warm environment it may be necessary to supply additional ventilation. Avoid operating the unit in an excessively humid environment like bath rooms etc.
Functional Overview of CD Player Unit
Front Panel
The front panel of the Burmester 089 CD Player features various controls and indicators:
- (1) Sliding cover: A cover for the CD drive slot.
- (2) INPUT LEDs: Indicate the selected input source.
- (3) SYNC LED: Indicates a correct data stream input.
- (4) TRACK display: Shows the current track number.
- (5) OPERATING MODE display: Shows the current operating mode.
- (6) REPEAT display: Indicates the repeat mode.
- (7) TIME display: Shows elapsed or remaining time of the track or CD.
- (8) SCAN- and REPEAT AB display: For scan and repeat AB functions.
- (9) VOLUME display: Shows the current volume level.
- (10) INPUT button: Used for selecting the input source.
- (11) DISPLAY button: Selects the display brightness.
- (12) SKIP |<< button: For selecting previous tracks.
- (13) SKIP >>| button: For selecting next tracks.
- (14) PROGRAM LED: Illuminates when a music program has been selected and saved.
- (15) IR receiver: Receives commands from the remote control.
- (16) AUDIO LED: Shows up sampling of 192kHz.
- (17) STOP button: Stops playback.
- (18) PLAY/PAUSE button: Starts or pauses playback.
- (19) VOLUME down button: Decreases the volume.
- (20) VOLUME up button: Increases the volume.
- (21) POWER switch: Switches the unit on or off.
- (22) POWER LED: Lights up red when the unit is on, orange in standby.
Rear Panel
The rear panel features various connection terminals:
- (23) BURLINK interface RS-232: For system control via RS-232, with check LEDs.
- (24) BURLINK interface USB: For system control via USB, with check LEDs.
- (25) MMI slot: For future upgrades, e.g., a multi-media interface.
- (26) Analog audio input right channel (bal.): Balanced analog input for the right channel.
- (27) Analog audio input left channel (bal.): Balanced analog input for the left channel.
- (28) AC mains switch: Main power switch for the unit.
- (29) AC mains terminal: Connection for the AC power cord.
- (30) REMOTE output: For controlling other Burmester units.
- (31) REMOTE input: For being controlled by other Burmester units.
- (32) Digital audio output TOTX: Optical digital audio output for fiber optic cables.
- (33) Digital audio output RCA (75Ω): Coaxial digital audio output.
- (34) Digital audio input TORX: Optical digital audio input for fiber optic cables.
- (35) Digital audio input RCA (75Ω): Coaxial digital audio input.
- (36) Analog audio output right channel (bal.): Balanced analog audio output for the right channel.
- (37) Analog audio output (unbal.): Unbalanced analog audio output.
- (38) Analog audio output (unbal.) for analog recording unit (TAPE): Unbalanced analog output for tape recording.
- (39) Analog audio output left channel (bal.): Balanced analog audio output for the left channel.
- (40) CD clamp: Used to secure the CD on the turntable.
First Startup
CAUTION: Before connecting the unit, please check if the input voltage data on the rear panel, underneath the AC mains terminal (29) is equal to the local voltage of your wall outlet. Make sure the ground lead in your power outlet is working correctly. A missing or faulty ground is extremely dangerous!
In case of doubt, contact a licensed electrician or your power supply company.
- Connect your preferred in- and outputs of the CD player with your HiFi system. Please refer to the chapter CONNECTIONS.
- Make sure that the AC mains switch (28) on the rear panel of the CD player is set to OFF position.
- Connect the AC power cord into the AC mains terminal (29) and plug it into the wall outlet.
- Switch the AC mains switch (28) to ON position.
- Use the [power switch] (21) on the front panel of the CD player to switch the unit on.
- During the first startup, you must decide if the ANALOG OUTPUTS (36), (37), (38), and (39) will run with a defined (FIX) or adjustable (VARIABLE) volume level.
- CAUTION: If the CD player is connected directly to power amplifiers or active loudspeakers, you must choose the setting VARIABLE! The setting FIX may destroy your loudspeakers, because the CD player delivers the maximum volume level to the outputs!
- Open the sliding cover (1) on the top of the CD player, place a CD onto the turntable with the printed side upwards, and then place the CD CLAMP (40) onto the CD.
- After closing the sliding cover, the CD player reads the information track of the CD and shows the number of tracks and the total playing time of the CD on the display.
- By pressing the [PLAY/PAUSE button] (18) on the front panel or on the remote control, the CD player starts playing.
- If you have chosen the VARIABLE setting, the volume level can be regulated with the [VOLUME+] and [VOLUME-] buttons on the front panel or the remote control.
- Detailed information about the functions of the CD player is available in the following chapters of this owner's manual.
Connections
All connection terminals are located on the rear panel. While connecting the CD player, all components of the music system must be turned off.
CAUTION: Before connecting the unit, please check if the input voltage of the 089 is equal to the local voltage of your wall outlet. Make sure the ground lead in your power outlet is working correctly. A missing or faulty ground is extremely dangerous! In case of doubt contact a licensed electrician.
AC Mains Terminal
Make sure the AC mains switch (28) is set to OFF. Connect the appliance connector of the power cord to the AC mains terminal (29). Then plug the power cord into the wall outlet.
Connecting an Analog Amplifier
The 089 offers balanced as well as unbalanced outputs (ANALOG OUTPUTS) for connecting to an analog preamp, integrated amp, or power amp.
- If your amplifier provides balanced inputs, connect them to the terminals BALANCED R (36) and BALANCED L (39).
- Unbalanced connections can be made using the terminals UNBAL (37).
- An analog recording device may be hooked up to the terminal TAPE (38).
- For superior sound, balanced connections are recommended whenever possible.
- If connecting to an analog preamplifier or integrated amplifier, choose the FIX setting in SYSTEM-SETUP (menu item OUTPUT).
- CAUTION: If the CD player is connected directly to power amplifiers, you must choose the setting VARIABLE! The setting FIX may destroy your loudspeakers, because the CD player delivers the maximum volume level to the outputs!
- The pinning of the balanced outputs is: PIN1=GND, PIN2=NEG, PIN3=POS.
Connecting a Digital Amplifier
The player provides two DIGITAL OUTPUTS for connecting a digital amplifier:
- TOTX (32): Sends optical signals via optical fiber cable with plugs according to TOSHIBA norm.
- RCA (33): Requires a 75-ohm coax cable with RCA plugs.
Choose whichever connection sounds best if your amplifier allows both types of hookup.
CAUTION: The terminal RCA (33) must not be connected to the analog input of an amplifier because this could damage the amp or the loudspeakers.
Connecting a Digital Source Component
The CD player 089 offers two DIGITAL INPUTS for connecting external digital source components:
- TORX (34): Receives optical signals and requires an optical cable with plugs according to TOSHIBA norm.
- RCA (35): Receives electronic signals and requires a 75-ohm coax cable with RCA plugs.
Choose whichever connection sounds best if your amplifier allows both types of connection.
CAUTION: The digital inputs of the 089 can process PCM stereo data with a sample rate up to 192kHz. For sample rates above 96kHz, the player needs to be switched to 192kHz mode by pressing the AUDIO button on your remote control.
Connecting an Analog Source Component
The CD player 089 offers a balanced ANALOG INPUT for connecting external analog source components such as a phono preamplifier or an FM-tuner.
- The analog input terminals (26) and (27) are balanced connectors.
- If your analog source component offers only unbalanced connectors, you need two RCA to XLR connectors, which can be ordered from your local dealer.
- The pinning of the balanced inputs is: PIN1=GND, PIN2=NEG, PIN3=POS.
Additional Connections
- REMOTE (30, 31): Connecting DC OUT (30) to the corresponding DC IN jack of another BURMESTER unit allows switching that unit on or off simultaneously with the 089 (master function). Connecting DC IN (31) to the corresponding DC OUT jack of another BURMESTER unit allows switching the 089 on or off simultaneously with the other unit (slave function).
- MMI slot (optional) (25): Offers to integrate future developments into the CD player 089, for example a multi-media interface.
- BURLINK: The BURmester-LINK interface plugs (23), (24) allow connection to a computer system (e.g., PC, CRESTRON, AMX). This enables comfortable control of your HiFi system using an individual programmable touch panel. LEDs T (Transmit) and R (Receive) beside the plugs indicate data exchange status.
Operating Controls
With the exception of the AC mains switch, all operating controls are located on the front panel.
- AC mains switch (28): Located on the rear panel, this switch turns AC power to the unit on and off. Switching to ON powers up the standby transformer.
- POWER switch (21): Switches the CD player on and off, provided the AC mains switch is ON. Setting to "OFF" powers down all functions. Switching from "OFF" to "STBY" lights the POWER LED (22) orange (standby mode). In "STBY", the unit can be turned on/off via the POWER switch, the remote control, the BURLINK interface, or the DC IN jack. In operating mode (ON), the POWER LED (22) is red. PLEASE NOTE: Always switch off the 089 with the POWER switch first before turning the AC mains switch to OFF position.
- INPUT button (10): Sequentially changes the digital signal source between external inputs (ANALOG, RCA, TORX, MMI) and the internal CD transport. The selected input is indicated by an illuminated INPUT LED (2).
- [PLAY/PAUSE button] (18): Starts playback of the CD. Playback can be interrupted by pressing the button again.
- [STOP button] (17): Stops playback of the CD. To restart from the beginning, press the [PLAY/PAUSE button].
- [SKIP >>| button] (13): Advances playback to the beginning of the next track. Pressing multiple times skips ahead one track at a time.
- [SKIP |<< button] (12): Returns playback to the beginning of the current track. Pressing multiple times skips back one track at a time.
- [VOLUME +] (20) / [VOLUME -] (19) buttons: Adjust the volume of the analog outputs. This function is only available if the OUTPUT menu item in SYSTEM-SETUP is set to VARIABLE. The selected volume is shown on the alphanumeric display.
- [DISPLAY button] (11): Varies the alphanumeric display brightness in four steps from maximum to off. If set to "off", the display lights up only when controls are used and then switches off automatically. In SETUP mode, the display is permanently on at maximum brightness.
Function Indicators
- POWER LED (22): Lights up orange in standby mode; lights up red when the unit is switched on.
- AUDIO LED (16): Illuminates when the internal sample rate of the D/A converter is switched to 192kHz.
- PROGRAM LED (14): Illuminates when the PROGRAM function has been activated.
- SYNC LED (3): Indicates a correct data stream input.
- INPUT LEDs (2): Show which input is selected.
- Alphanumeric display: Shows the current track (TRACK display 4) and playing time (TIME display 7). The TIME display can be switched to show elapsed time of the current track, elapsed time of the CD, or remaining time of the CD by pressing the MODE button on the remote control. If volume regulation is active (OUTPUT=VARIABLE), the VOLUME display (9) shows the current volume. The operating mode (Play, Pause, Stop) can be displayed by setting the DISPLAY menu item in SYSTEM SETUP to MAXIMUM.
System Setup
The SYSTEM SETUP menu allows programming of basic settings. All settings are saved automatically upon leaving SETUP and remain after switching off the unit.
The SYSTEM SETUP can be operated using the [MENU button] and the navigation buttons (up, down, left, right) on the remote control.
If the unit is switched off inadvertently while in SETUP mode, all made settings will be saved.
Operating the System Setup
- Activating SETUP: Press the [MENU button] to activate SYSTEM SETUP. The alphanumeric display shows "SYSTEM-SETUP" for approximately two seconds, followed by the first menu item.
- Select menu item: Use the navigation buttons (up/down) to choose the menu item you want to change.
- Change settings: Use the navigation buttons (left/right) to change the setting of the selected menu item.
- Leaving SETUP: Pressing the [MENU button] deactivates SETUP and saves all settings. The CD player switches off and then on again. Depending on the AUTOPLAY setting, it will either read the CD's content (AUTOPLAY = OFF) or start playing immediately (AUTOPLAY = ON). SETUP also deactivates automatically if no command is sent for approximately 15 seconds.

Description of Menu Items
- AUTO: Choose if the CD player should start playback directly after switching on. OFF: Reads table of content, remains in STOP mode. ON: Begins playing the CD immediately.
- OUTPUT: Choose between FIX (defined output level) or VARIABLE (adjustable output level) for analog outputs. CAUTION: If connected directly to power amplifiers, you must choose VARIABLE! FIX may destroy loudspeakers by delivering maximum level.
- SERIALNUMBER: Choose if the unit's type and serial number are shown after switching on. OFF: Not shown. ON: Shown.
- DISPLAY: During playback, the display shows track number, playing time, and volume (if VARIABLE OUTPUT). Setting to MAXIMUM also displays the operating mode (Play, Pause, Stop). MINIMUM shows only track, time, and volume.
- RC-INPUT: If set to YES, [STATION +/- buttons] on the remote control can change inputs. If NO, inputs are changed only via the front panel [INPUT button].
- INIT-VOLUME: Selects the initial volume level (01-20) when OUTPUT is VARIABLE. Setting to LAST remembers the last volume level before turning off.
- DEFAULTS: Pressing the [OK button] after selecting this item resets all menu items and display brightness to default. The display will show "CHANGED" to confirm.
Remote Control
- [POWER button]: Switches the CD player on or off (requires Mains switch to be ON and front panel POWER switch to be STBY).
- [DIM button]: Varies alphanumeric display brightness in four steps (max to off). If "off", display lights briefly when controls are used.
- [AUDIO button]: Selects internal sample rate converter: 96kHz or 192kHz. 192kHz setting is indicated by the illuminated AUDIO LED (16).
- [REPEAT button]: Sets track or CD repeat mode. Display shows a simple arrow for track repeat, a returning arrow for full CD repeat.
- [MENU button]: Activates or leaves the SYSTEM SETUP.
- Numbers 0-9: Numerical keypad for direct track selection. Playback begins automatically after selection.
- Navigation buttons (up, down, left, right): Used to select and set menu items in SYSTEM SETUP and to program favorite track selections.
- [PLAY/PAUSE button]: Starts playback. Pauses playback when pressed again.
- [STOP button]: Stops playback. Press [PLAY/PAUSE] to restart from the beginning.
- [SKIP >>| button]: Advances playback to the beginning of the next track. Pressing multiple times skips ahead one track at a time.
- [SKIP |<< button]: Returns playback to the beginning of the current track. Pressing multiple times skips back one track at a time.
- [SEARCH >> button]: Alternately activates slow or fast forward mode. Press [PLAY/PAUSE] to return to normal playback.
- [SEARCH << button]: Alternately activates slow or fast backward mode. Press [PLAY/PAUSE] to return to normal playback.
- VOLUME buttons ([VOLUME +], [VOLUME -]): Adjust the sound level. This feature is only available if OUTPUT is set to VARIABLE.
- [STATION +/- buttons]: Select external inputs (ANALOG, RCA, TORX, MMI) or the internal CD drive. Requires RC-INPUT in SYSTEM SETUP to be YES.
- [MODE button]: Changes the TIME display to show elapsed track time, elapsed CD time, or remaining CD time.
- [PROGR. button]: Activates or deactivates programming mode for individual track selection.
- [OK button]: Confirms track selection during programming. Also confirms the DEFAULTS setting to reset to factory defaults.
- [CLEAR button]: Deletes a favorite track program.
All other buttons on the remote control have no functions for the 089.
Programming a Favourite Track Selection of a CD
Up to 50 tracks from a CD can be programmed for playback in a selected order using the remote control.
- Activating the programming mode: Press the [PROGR. button]. The display shows "PROGRAM", then "PRG: 01 TCK: 00" (program space and track number).
- Arranging a program: Use the navigation buttons (forward/previous) to select a track. Press [OK button] to save the selected track. The display shows "SAVED". The next program space is then activated.
- Saving a program: Press the [PROGR. button] again to save the program and exit programming mode. The PROGRAM LED (14) lights up if the programming is valid.
- Playback of the program: When the PROGRAM LED (14) is on, press the [PLAY/PAUSE button] to start your favorite track selection.
- Selecting a defined program space: Press the navigation button. An arrow indicates program space selection. Use navigation buttons to select the desired program space.
- Programming a track: Press the navigation button. An arrow indicates track selection for the current program space. Use navigation buttons to select the track. Press [OK button] to save the track. The display shows "SAVED".
- Deleting a program: Press the [CLEAR button] or open the sliding cover. The PROGRAM LED (14) turns dark. To delete while in programming mode, press [CLEAR], confirm with [OK] if prompted.
BURLINK
Connections
Connecting to the BURLINK interface can be done via the 9-pin D-SUB connector (RS-232) or the USB connector.
- RS-232 configuration: 9600 Baud, 8bit, no parity, 1 stop bit, no hardware handshake.
- USB connector: Requires a USB device driver installation. System requirements are WINDOWS 2000 or WINDOWS XP operating system.
Commands
The following commands can control the CD player 089. All commands must be sent in capital letters followed by a carriage return (\r).
- POWON\r: Switches the unit on.
- POWOFF\r: Switches the unit to standby mode.
- VOLUP\r: Increases the volume by one step.
- VOLDN\r: Decreases the volume by one step.
- PLAY\r: Starts playback of the CD.
- PAUSE\r: Pauses playback of the CD.
- STOP\r: Stops playback of the CD.
- SKIPFW\r: Skips forward to the following tracks.
- SKIPBW\r: Skips backward to the beginning of the current and previous tracks.
- FORW\r: Starts search forward slow.
- BACKW\r: Starts search backward slow.
- FORWR\r: Starts search forward fast.
- BACKWR\r: Starts search backward fast.
- KEY0 to KEY9\r: For direct track selection.
- REPEAT\r: Switches on/off repeat modes (Track, Disc).
- CLEAR\r: Deletes a favorite track selection program.
- AUDIO\r: Switches between sample rates 96kHz and 192kHz.
- AUDIO96\r: Switches to a sample rate of 96kHz.
- AUDIO192\r: Switches to a sample rate of 192kHz.
- DMODE\r: Opens and closes the SYSTEM SETUP.
- INP+\r: Switches the inputs of the CD player.
- INP-\r: Switches the inputs of the CD player.
- DIM0\r: Switches the display brightness to maximum.
- DIM1\r: Switches the display brightness to middle.
- DIM2\r: Switches the display brightness to low.
- DIM3\r: Switches the display to off mode.
- DIM\r: Switches the brightness step by step (0,1,2,3,0,1,2...).
- TYPE\r: Shows the type of the unit.
- VERSION\r: Shows the software version of the unit.
- INFO\r: Shows the content of the alphanumeric display.
General Instructions
Please read these instructions and the owner's manual carefully and keep them safely with the owner's manual of your component. If you have any questions, contact your dealer.
- Operating temperature: An operating temperature that is too high or too low may cause malfunctioning. Let the unit adapt to room temperature before connecting and operating.
- Setting up:
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Do not subject the equipment to excessive heat, cold, humidity, or dust.
- Provide adequate air circulation; avoid placing the equipment in enclosures.
- Slots and openings in the housing are for ventilation and must not be covered up.
- Ensure the component is not exposed to dripping water or splash water. Do not place liquid containers on the component.
- Open flames like candles should not be placed on top of any electronic unit.
- Mains voltage:
- Check if the mains voltage setting on the back panel matches your household power supply voltage. Any change should only be done by an expert.
- For AC connection, use only the provided three-pronged power cable.
- The grounding pin must not be bypassed. Connect only to a wall outlet with a fully functional grounding pin.
- Comm. Operation:
- Before installation, switch off all components of a stereo system. Switch them back on only after all connections are made correctly and completely.
- Never try to operate the equipment if it has obviously been damaged or if liquid has gotten into it.
- Terminals: Do not touch the pins of the connecting terminals on the back panel with fingers. Static discharges may damage the electronic circuitry.
- Interconnects: Burmester supplies custom-made balanced and unbalanced interconnect and speaker cables. For the cleanest power supply, the triple-shielded power cord BURMESTER-POWER is recommended.
- IR receiver: The IR receiver must not be covered up by objects.
- Heat development: Be careful when touching the housing; it may get warm during operation.
- Reset: If the unit does not react to control buttons, it can be reset by switching it off and back on using the AC mains switch.
Safety Information
- Lightning strikes: To protect against voltage spikes from lightning, completely unplug the power cord. Merely switching the unit off is insufficient.
- Fuses: Fuses are located inside the unit and should only be changed by a qualified technician.
- Warranty: Warranty is valid if the unit is hooked-up and operated correctly and is mechanically undamaged. Opening, modifying, or dismantling the unit voids the warranty.
- Care: Never clean the housing with a wet cloth or chemical cleaning agent. Ensure no liquid gets into the housing.
- Battery hazard: The remote control contains batteries. Do not expose them to excessive heat, as this may result in overheating, fire, explosion, smoke, and gas. Have batteries replaced by your dealer. Swallowing batteries is fatal; keep away from children.
- [Caution symbol]: This symbol on the equipment points to important orders found in the owner's manual.
- [High voltage symbol]: This symbol on or inside the equipment warns of dangerously high voltage.
- Disposal: If the unit and its accessories are to be put out of operation definitively, take them to a local recycling plant for environmentally friendly disposal.
- CAUTION: The unit should only be opened by qualified experts. Opening carries the risk of encountering dangerously high voltage. Therefore, the power cord must always be unplugged before opening the equipment.
