Using This Document

This document describes the process of replacing existing DARWIN instruments with Yokogawa SMARTDAC+ models.

Introduction

Existing DARWIN instruments can be replaced with GX/GP/GM models to suit current and future application needs. This guide explains the replacement process in three main parts:

  1. Replacing DARWIN with the GX/GP.
  2. Replacing DARWIN with the GM.
  3. Other Replacement Suggestions (applicable to GX, GP, and GM).

1 Replacing DARWIN with the GX/GP

1-3 Replacing Standalone Models

Benefits include increased channels, PC-independence, long duration data recording, and paperless records. Users can achieve more channels, larger memory, longer duration recordings, and PC-free operation (with the DA100).

  • DR241/DR231 (Max 30 ch) with 512 KB memory (floppy drive installed) can be replaced by GX10/GP10 (Up to 100 ch) with 500 MB internal memory. This is described as "Multichannel Space-saving (GX10/GP10)". The GX10/GP10 can connect up to 3 modules.
  • DA100 (Max 40 ch) with DAQ32 standard software can be replaced by GX20/GP20 (Up to 100 ch) with 500 MB internal memory. This is described as "PC-free Multichannel". The GX20/GP20 can connect up to 10 modules.
  • DC100 (Max 40 ch) with 1 MB (standard), 2 MB, 4 MB memory can be replaced by GX10/GP10 (Up to 30 ch) with 500 MB internal memory. This is described as "Large memory Multichannel". The GX10/GP10 can connect up to 3 modules.
  • DR130 (Max 20 ch) can also be replaced by GX10/GP10.

1-4 Replacing Expanded Models

The GX20/GP20 large memory models can be expanded to measure on up to 450 channels, offering even more measurements.

  • DR242/DR232 (Max 300 ch) with 512 KB memory (floppy drive installed) can be replaced by GX20/GP20 (Up to 450 ch) with 500 MB (standard) or 1.2 GB (Large memory) internal memory. This is described as "Multichannel". The GX20/GP20 can connect to GX60 expandable I/O units.
  • DA100 (Max 300 ch) with DAQ32 standard software can be replaced by GX20/GP20 (Up to 450 ch). This is described as "PC-free Multichannel (large memory model)".
  • DC100 (Max 300 ch) with 1 MB (standard), 2 MB, 4 MB memory can be replaced by GX10/GP10 (Up to 100 ch) with 500 MB internal memory. This is described as "Large memory". The GX10/GP10 can connect to GX60 expandable I/O units.

1-5 GX/GP System Configuration

Standard model configuration

The GX10/GP10 records on up to 30 channels, and the GX20/GP20 records on up to 100 channels. Connecting up to 6 expansion units allows for spreading out inputs.

  • Up to 30 ch (GX10/GP10): A GX10/GP10 unit with a "Back" panel, showing connections for up to 3 modules.
  • Up to 100 ch (GX20/GP20): A GX20/GP20 unit with a "Back" panel, showing connections for up to 10 modules.
  • Connecting expansion units:
    • GX10/GP10 can connect up to 2 modules with an expansion unit, and up to 6 expansion units can be connected to GX60 expandable I/O. Up to 6 modules can be connected to the GX10/GP10.
    • GX20/GP20 can connect up to 9 modules with an expansion unit, and up to 6 expansion units can be connected to GX60 expandable I/O. Up to 6 modules can be connected to the GX20/GP20.

Large memory model configuration

Connect up to 6 expansion units for up to 450 channels of measurement.

  • Up to 450 ch (GX20/GP20): A GX20/GP20 unit with a "Back" panel, showing connections for up to 9 modules. LAN cable (CAT5 or later) is used for connection.
  • Chain up to 6 units: Even the standard GX20/GP20 can measure up to 100 channels. By combining a large memory model with expansion units, up to 450 channels can be measured.
  • Reduce wiring with distributed installation: When the site (DUT) and recorder are in different locations, the expansion unit can be placed at the site to monitor without long-distance signal wiring of thermocouples and other sensors. This setup shows a main unit connected to up to 6 modules, which then connect to GX60 expandable I/O units. Up to 100 m distance is possible between units.

1-6 System Configuration Comparison (Maximum Configuration)

This section compares the maximum configurations of DARWIN and GX/GP large memory models.

  • DARWIN (Up to 300 ch): Shows a Main unit (DR242/DR232 or DA100) connected to up to 6 subunits (DS600). Input modules cannot be connected to the main unit, only alarm output and DI/DO (up to 3 units). Total length of up to 500 m with extension cables (DV200).

Replacing 300 thermocouples

By installing modules in the GX/GP, space can be saved by reducing expansion units, and an additional 30 measurements can be gained.

1-9 Wall Mount Dimensions of Expandable I/O (GX60)

The GX60 expandable I/O can be installed in the subunit position without any adjustments, as its attachment hole dimensions are the same as the DS600.

2-4 Replacing Expanded Models

The GM10-2 large memory models can be expanded to measure on up to 420 channels, offering even more measurements.

2-5 GM System Configuration

GM10-1 Standard model configuration

The GM10-1 records on up to 100 channels. In a multi-unit system, input sections can be installed in a distributed configuration.

  • Multi unit: An expansion module connects to a Main Unit (up to 6 modules). A LAN cable (CAT5 or later) connects the Main Unit to a Sub Unit (up to 6 modules). Up to 6 sub units can be connected. Up to 10 modules can be connected.

GM10-2 Large memory model configuration

Connect up to 6 sub units for up to 420 channels of measurement.

  • Up to 420 ch: A GM unit showing connections for up to 6 modules. An expansion module connects to a Main unit. LAN cable (CAT5 or later) is used.
  • Chain up to 6 subunits: By combining a main unit with subunits (Multi unit system), up to 420 channels can be measured.
  • Reduce wiring with distributed installation: When the site (DUT) and datalogger are in different locations, the sub unit can be placed at the site to monitor without long-distance signal wiring of thermocouples and other sensors. This setup shows a main unit connected to up to 6 modules, which then connect to a Subunit. Up to 100 m distance is possible between units.

2-10 GM Wall Mounting Dimensions

3 Other Replacement Suggestions (applicable to GX, GP, and GM)

3-1 When Using Data Acquisition Software (Sold Separately)

DAQ32Plus and DAQLOGGER can be replaced with GA10. Switching to GA10 provides data acquisition at 100 ms, connectivity with up to 100 units, and access to up to 2000 channels. The system can be managed with multilogging (multiple asynchronous data acquisitions) and user privileges (4 levels: owner, manager, operator, and monitor).

3-2 DARWIN Compatible Communication Functions

Replacing existing programs with the GX/GP/GM

The GX/GP supports DARWIN commands (with a few exceptions), allowing existing programs created for data acquisition on DARWIN to be used with GX/GP/GM. Support includes Ethernet, RS-232 (GX/GP only), and RS-422/485.

Users must match their GX/GP/GM system and module configurations with those of the DARWIN system. DARWIN compatible communication functions cannot be used to connect with DAQ32, DAQ32Plus, or DAQLOGGER.

3-3 Replacing Existing DARWIN units in Stages

This section describes a phased replacement approach for existing DARWIN units.

When using data acquisition software (sold separately)

The GA10 data logging software can be added while keeping existing DAQ32Plus or DAQLOGGER. Data can be centralized in one application, and DARWIN units can be replaced in stages. DAQ32Plus and DAQLOGGER tag settings can be used without modifications.
