For iOS Devices
Document Version: EN - 2021_8_26
Introduction
The iLOQ S50 Mobile App for iOS serves as a digital key, enabling you to open iLOQ S50 NFC locks for which you have valid access. Access rights are transmitted to your phone and managed remotely over the air by a locking system administrator. This guide will help you get started with the app and navigate its functionalities.
1 Installing the app
The iLOQ S50 Mobile App for iOS is compatible with iPhone 7 and newer models running iOS 13 or a later version. Due to variations in iPhone models that can affect NFC performance, seamless operation is not guaranteed on all devices. It is recommended to test the application on your phone before full deployment.
Before installing the app, ensure the following:
-
Your phone is NFC compatible and supports NFC tag read/write functions.
- NFC tag read/write functionality is essential for lock opening. This is supported by Apple in iPhone 7 and newer models with iOS 13 or later. iOS smartphones older than iPhone 7 cannot write NFC tags and will not function with iLOQ S50 NFC locks.
-
Your phone is not rooted.
- Rooting compromises device security. The iLOQ S50 Mobile App cannot be installed or used on rooted devices.
-
Your phone's operating system is running the latest available version.
- This ensures your phone is protected by the latest security patches. Keeping the operating system updated is crucial for security.
The iLOQ S50 Mobile App is available for free download from the Apple App Store. A valid Apple ID is required to install apps. After installation, the app must be registered as a key to a locking system before it can be used.
1.1 Installing the app from iLOQ's registration message (SMS or email)
- Open the iLOQ registration message and press the provided link. An instruction page will open in your default browser.
- Press the [Download on the App Store] button. This will redirect you to the iLOQ S50 app installation page on the App Store.
- Press the [GET] button (or [Download] if re-installing). Once the app is downloaded, press the [OPEN] button.
Visual Description: Screenshots show an SMS message with a registration link, an instruction page for downloading the app from the App Store, and the App Store listing for iLOQ S50 with version details.
- The iLOQ S50 Mobile App will launch and request permission to send notifications. Notifications provide updates on app activity, such as access rights changes or new tasks. Press [Allow] to enable notifications.
- Review the End User License Agreement (EULA) and Privacy Policy. After reading, navigate back to the app and press [Agree & Continue] to accept the terms.
- The app will open and display "Not registered". This indicates the app is installed but not yet linked to a locking system. Proceed to Chapter 2 for registration.
1.2 Installing the app directly from the App Store
You can also install the app directly from the Apple App Store without using a registration message.
- Open the App Store.
- Search for "iLOQ S50" and tap the app icon.
- Follow steps 3 through 6 as described in Chapter 1.1.
2 Registering the app as a key to a locking system
Before the installed app can be used, it must be registered as a key to a locking system. This registration is initiated by a locking system administrator, who will send you a registration SMS or email. If this is your first registration to a specific locking system after installation, you will also receive a one-time activation code via SMS or email. Upon receiving the registration message, follow these steps:
- Open the iLOQ registration message and press the link. The app will open and begin the registration process.
- If this is the first registration to a particular locking system, the app will prompt for an activation code. Enter the one-time activation code received via SMS or email, then press [Activate].
- If the code is valid, your phone key will be activated. Press [OK]. The app is now ready for use.
Visual Description: Screenshots depict an SMS message containing a registration link, the app's prompt for a one-time activation code, and a confirmation screen indicating successful activation.
2.1 Registering the app to multiple locking systems
The app can be registered as a key for up to four different locking systems. The process for registering additional systems is identical to the first registration. Follow the steps above to register the app for other locking systems. The locking systems to which the app is registered are listed in the "Locking systems" view at the bottom of the screen.
Visual Description: A screenshot shows the "Locking systems" view with multiple systems listed, such as "MegaWatt Co." and "Waterfall Energy".
3 Opening locks with the app
Access rights, defined by the administrator in the locking system management software and assigned during registration, determine which locks you can open, at what times, and under what conditions. Administrators can force updates to access rights at any time. For security reasons, the app does not display which specific locks you have access to; this information should be obtained from your locking system administrator.
To open a lock using the app:
- Open the iLOQ S50 Mobile App. If there are pending updates for your phone key, the app will begin updating it. Wait for this process to complete before proceeding.
- Press the lock opening button to activate NFC. The "Ready to Scan" notification will appear.
Visual Description: App screens illustrate the 'Tap to use the lock' interface, followed by a 'Ready to Scan' prompt with instructions to hold the iPhone against the lock.
- Position your phone's NFC antenna area close to the lock's antenna knob. Refer to your phone's operating instructions or contact the manufacturer for the NFC antenna location.
- As the app communicates with the lock, keep the phone steady until the "Access Granted" screen is displayed. The lock's internal mechanism will activate, allowing you to open it.
Visual Description: A photograph shows a hand holding an iPhone near a lock. Subsequent app screens show "Communicating...", then "Access Granted!".
Notes: The communication time (indicated by the "Communicating..." screen) may be extended if the app is performing a programming task, fetching an audit trail, or if the lock requires server validation during opening. If server validation is required, your phone must have an active network connection.
4 Key expiry intervals
The locking system administrator can set a key expiry interval for your digital key. This interval is a security measure requiring users to refresh keys from the server periodically to ensure access rights remain current. If a key expiry interval is set, a red exclamation mark ❗ will appear next to the locking system name. This setting is specific to each locking system. If your app is registered to multiple systems, some may have expiry intervals while others do not, and these intervals can vary between systems.
To view key expiry details for each locking system, tap the key expiry interval button (clock icon ⏰) in the "Locking Systems" view.
Visual Description: App screens show the "Locking systems" list. One screen details key expiry information, such as "Due in: 23 hours, 56 minutes" for "Waterfall Energy" and "Keys need to be refreshed!" for "MegaWatt Co.".
Pressing [OK] returns to the main screen without refreshing keys from the server. Pressing the [Refresh] button refreshes keys from the server and resets the expiry interval counter for all associated locking systems.
5 Reading lock information with the app
In addition to opening locks, the app allows you to read lock information, such as the lock's serial number, software version, and programming state.
To read lock information:
- Press the info button (i).
- Press the [Read] button to activate NFC. The "Ready to Scan" notification will be shown.
Visual Description: App screens show the "Tap to use the lock" interface, followed by the "Lock info" screen, and then a "Ready to Scan" prompt.
- Position your phone's NFC antenna area close to the lock's antenna knob. Keep the phone steady until the app displays the lock information.
- Press [OK] to exit lock info mode, or scan another lock by repeating step 2.
Visual Description: A photograph shows a hand holding an iPhone near a lock. Subsequent app screens show "Communicating...", then "Lock info read.". The final screen displays detailed lock information including serial number, software version, and software state.
6 Locking system admin messages
The locking system administrator can send messages to phone key users via the management system. These messages may contain general information, details about received keys, or other relevant updates. Messaging within the app is one-way; the app can receive admin messages but users cannot reply.
To view received messages:
- Open the app.
- Press the [Messages] button to view received messages.
Visual Description: App screens show the "Tap to use the lock" interface, followed by the "Messages" screen displaying a sample administrative message with date, time, sender, and content.
You can delete messages by pressing the trashcan icon ?️ in the top right corner of the messages view. Note that all messages will be deleted simultaneously.
