Product Description

The Mastervolt AC Master converts DC voltage to pure sine wave AC voltage.

Safety Instructions

WARNING!

Before operating the AC Master, read and keep these safety instructions.

  • Use the AC Master in accordance with the instructions and specifications in this manual.
  • Connections and safety functions must be performed according to applicable local regulations.
  • Operating the AC Master without proper grounding could lead to dangerous situations!
  • Use DC cables of adequate size. Insert a fuse in the positive cable near the battery. Consult the specifications.
  • If the DC input cables (battery) are connected with reversed polarity, the AC Master will be damaged. Such damage is not covered by the warranty. Verify all connections are correct before inserting the fuse.
  • Do not connect the inverter's AC output to an AC input source.
  • Do not open the casing, as it may contain high voltage inside!

Unpacking

The packaging contains:

  • AC Master unit (including DC cables)
  • This user manual

After unpacking, check the AC Master for any damage. Do not use the AC Master if it is damaged. If in doubt, contact your supplier.

Output Frequency

On the front of the AC Master, a small switch (3) allows you to adjust the output frequency. The output frequency is factory-set to the correct value. If necessary, use a small flat-head screwdriver to adjust the output frequency to 50Hz or 60Hz.

Installation Location

  • Install the AC Master in a well-ventilated area, protected from rain, vapors, humidity, and dust.
  • Ambient temperature: 0 ... 40°C (32 ... 104°F).
  • Do not use the AC Master in locations with a risk of gas or dust explosions.
  • Mount the AC Master so that the airflow from the ventilation holes is not obstructed. Do not place any objects within 10 cm (4 inches) of the AC Master.
  • Use the supplied battery cables to connect the AC Master to the DC supply.
  • Do not install the AC Master in the same compartment as the batteries. Do not mount the AC Master above batteries, as they may release corrosive sulfuric gases.

Quick Installation Guide

This section provides a brief overview of the basic installation of the AC Master. Please consult the full manual for connecting additional functions and ensuring optimal performance and safe operation over the years. Read the safety instructions (page 43).

  1. Disconnect Power: Turn off all consumers, turn off all charging systems, and remove the battery fuse. Use a voltmeter to ensure the DC installation is free of voltage.
  2. Set Main Switch: Move the AC Master's main switch to the REMOTE / U position.
  3. Mount Unit: Secure the AC Master to a solid surface using four screws. Maintain a clearance of at least 10 cm (4 inches) around the unit.
  4. Connect Battery to DC Input: Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminal and the black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the battery. Insert a fuse holder into the positive battery cable, but do not insert the fuse yet. Incorrect polarity could damage the AC Master!
  5. Connect AC Load: The AC load can be connected directly to the AC outlet.
  6. Grounding: Connect the AC Master's ground point to the vehicle/boat's ground point. For a safe installation, if using a Residual Current Device (RCD) in the AC output cables, connect the ground cable (PE/GND) and the neutral (N) of the AC Master output to the ground point. Consult applicable local regulations.
  7. Insert Fuse and Power On: Place the inverter's fuse into the holder and switch on the AC Master.

Wiring

DC Cable Connection: Connect the DC cable as illustrated: the black cable (9) to the negative (-) pole of the power source/battery, and the red cable (10) to the positive (+) pole of the power source/battery. Insert a DC fuse holder into the positive battery cable, but do not insert the fuse yet. Ensure DC connections are firm.

Chassis Grounding: Use an AWG8 / 6 mm² cable to connect the ground point (8) to the central ground.

120V Models (Part No. 28520350): The AC output neutral connector (1) is automatically connected to the ground terminal when the inverter is in operation.

230V Models: The AC output neutral connector (1) is not connected to the ground terminal.

Optional Remote Operation Switch: If you wish to operate the AC Master from a remote location, install a switch as illustrated. When the contact is closed, the AC Master is turned on.

Diagram Description (Figure 2): Shows the AC Master unit with DC input, ground point, black negative cable, red positive cable, battery connection with fuse holder, and optional remote switch.

Operation

After Installation

  1. Check the polarity of the DC connections. Do not insert the DC fuse if the polarity is incorrect.
  2. Insert a DC fuse (see SPECIFICATIONS) into the holder. A spark may occur due to internal capacitors when inserting the fuse; this is normal.
  3. AC Voltage: The load can be connected directly to the AC output (1). Do not connect the AC Master's AC output to an AC input source.

Powering On

Move the main switch (4) to “ON”. The AC Master performs a self-check, indicated by two audible signals and a flashing indicator light (2). These signals last approximately two seconds. The unit then emits another audible signal, and the AC Master turns on with a green indicator light (2). The AC Master is now ready to supply the connected load.

Powering Off

Move the main switch (4) to the “REMOTE / U” position. Turning off the AC Master does not interrupt the connection to the batteries!

Remote Operation

The AC Master can be operated from a remote location via an optional remote switch. Move the main switch (4) to the “REMOTE / U” position. Once the remote contact is closed, the AC Master turns on.

Indicator Light

The operating status of the AC Master is indicated by the light (2).

  • Green Light: The inverter is functioning correctly.
  • Red Light: Fault detected. Probable causes: overload/short circuit.
  • Flashing Red Light: Fault detected. Probable causes: DC input voltage too high or too low, internal temperature too high.

Maintenance

No specific maintenance is required. If necessary, use a soft cloth to clean the AC Master. Do not use liquids, acids, or abrasive sponges.

Periodically check the wiring. Immediately correct defects such as loose connections or heat-damaged cables.

Deactivation

To deactivate the AC Master, proceed as follows:

  1. Move the main switch (4) to the “REMOTE / U” position.
  2. Remove the DC fuse. Ensure that no one else can undo your actions.
  3. You can now safely dismantle the AC Master.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot resolve the problem based on the table below, consult an installer.

Problem Probable Cause Remedy
No output, indicator light (2) is off Main switch (4) is set to REMOTE / U, but no remote switch is connected.
Remote switch is off (if applicable).
Set the main switch (4) to the ON position.
Close the remote operation switch.
No output, indicator light (2) is red. DC fuse blown.
AC output overloaded.
Replace the fuse.
Reduce the load and let the inverter cool down. The AC Master will restart when the internal temperature is reduced.
No output, indicator light (2) flashes red. DC input voltage too high.
DC input voltage too low (battery discharged).
Check the battery voltage and turn off the charger. The inverter will restart if the input voltage is < 15.5V or < 31.0V.
Charge the battery. The inverter will restart if the input voltage is < 14.6V or < 29.2V.
Inverter turns on and off. Indicator light (2) flashes red and green alternately. Insufficient airflow.
DC input voltage is too low due to voltage drop in DC cables (too long or too thin).
Battery discharged.
Check the airflow from the inverter. Do not block the cooling fan (5).
Reduce the length of the DC cables or use cables with a larger cross-section.
Disconnect the load and charge the battery.
Loose or corroded connections. Loose or corroded connections. Tighten connections and immediately repair burnt cables.
Some loads, such as televisions and clocks, do not function correctly. Incorrect output frequency setting. Check the load's required frequency against the AC Master's output frequency. Adjust the output frequency if necessary. See OUTPUT FREQUENCY.
