Bose Wave Music System IV Owner's Guide
Welcome to your Bose Wave Music System IV, an elegant way to bring high-quality sound into any room.
Introduction
The Wave Music System IV offers a premium audio experience with a range of features designed for ease of use and superior sound quality. It includes a display for system settings and information, an AUX connector for audio device playback, a headphone connector for private listening, an FM/AM tuner for precise radio reception, and a CD drive for enhanced music access. A remote control provides convenient operation from up to 20 feet away.
Included in the carton is a demonstration CD. Inserting this disc will automatically play the demonstration music, allowing you to experience the system's capabilities. For more details on playing audio CDs, refer to page 10.
The system benefits from over fourteen years of Bose Corporation research, featuring award-winning proprietary acoustic waveguide speaker technology. This technology utilizes a tube to efficiently transfer energy from a small speaker to the outside air, producing a wide range of low frequencies. The Wave Music System IV incorporates dual tapered waveguide speakers, connecting to two 26" tapered waveguides that combine to deliver performance exceeding the system's compact size.
Unpacking
Carefully unpack the carton and confirm that the following parts are included:
- Wave Music System IV unit
- Remote control (battery installed)
- Demonstration CD
- AC power cord(s)
- Antenna adapter (Europe and UK only)
- 2.5 mm dipole antenna
Note: The system may ship with multiple power cords. Use the power cord designated for your region. If any part of the system is damaged, do not use it. Contact your authorized Bose dealer or Bose customer service. Save the carton and packing materials for transporting or storing the system.
Setting Up the System
Placing the system
For optimal audio performance:
- Place the system across the room from where you listen.
- Position the system within two feet of a wall, avoiding placement directly in a corner.
- Ensure the system is placed on a flat, stable surface.
CAUTIONS:
- Do not place the system on a metal surface, as it may interfere with AM reception.
- Avoid placing the system on a heat-sensitive surface, as all electrical equipment generates some heat.
- Do not use the system in damp locations or any place where moisture can enter the unit.
Connecting to power
- Insert the small end of the power cord into the AC POWER connector on the system.
- Plug the power cord into an AC (mains) power outlet.
Setting the clock
After plugging in the system, set the clock using the remote control:
- Press and hold either the Time – or Time + button for approximately one second. The display will initially show “HOLD TO SET” and then change to “– CLOCK SET –”.
- Release the selected Time button.
- Press Time – to adjust the displayed time backward or Time + to adjust it forward until it matches the current time. You can also press and hold either button for rapid adjustment.
- Wait five seconds for the system to exit clock setup mode.
Notes:
- To change the clock from 12-hour (AM/PM) to 24-hour time, refer to “Changing a system setting” on page 15.
- If the system loses power due to an outage or if you unplug it, all system settings are permanently retained. However, the clock time is temporarily stored in backup memory for up to 48 hours.
Using the System
Remote control buttons
Use the remote control to operate the system. Aim the remote at the display and press the buttons. The remote functions within 20 feet of the display.
- Radio: Toggles between radio on and FM/AM selection.
- Sleep Buzzer: Snooze alarms, set system shut-off timer, and select Buzzer alarm.
- Aux: Listen to a source connected to the AUX IN connector.
- Playback controls: Includes play/pause, skip track, scan, and stop/eject functions.
- Play Mode: Select shuffle and repeat options for CDs. Change the display of digital radio station information.
- Time – +: Set clock and alarm times.
- Alarm Setup – Menu: Access alarm settings and the setup menu.
Touch pad
The system features a touch-sensitive control pad on the top panel. Momentarily placing your hand on the touch pad can power the system on or off, snooze a sounding alarm, and reset it for the next day.
Reading the display
The display shows source indicators (CD, FM, AM, or AUX), play mode, clock, alarm status, track number, elapsed time, source-related information, and system status.
Powering on or off the system
- Press the power button on the remote control.
- Touch the touch pad. The last source you were listening to will be active.
- Alternatively, press any source button (Radio, CD, Aux) to power the system on to that source.
Notes:
- Selecting AUX does not power on a device connected to AUX IN. Power on the device first.
- After 24 hours of no button presses, the system switches to standby (off). If the 20-minute system standby timer is enabled, the system switches to standby if no audio is played and no buttons are pressed for 20 minutes.
Controlling the volume
Press and hold + or – to adjust the volume level. The display shows the volume level from 0 (silent) to 99 (loud). Press the mute button to mute the system, and press it again or press + to unmute.
Note: When the system is off, the volume can only be adjusted between 10 and 75.
Setting the Sleep timer
Press SLEEP to set the system to shut off after a selected period. After pressing SLEEP, the display shows “SLEEP – 30 MIN” (or your last setting), and the sleep timer begins counting down. If the system is off, pressing SLEEP powers it on and immediately sets the sleep time.
While the SLEEP setting is displayed, press SLEEP again to set the sleep timer to 10-90 minutes (in 10-minute increments) or OFF. If more than 10 seconds elapse between button presses, the system automatically exits the sleep timer setup mode.
To review the remaining sleep time, press SLEEP. To cancel the sleep timer, press and release SLEEP until “SLEEP – OFF” appears on the display.
Listening to Other Sources
Listening to FM or AM radio
Press RADIO to turn on the station last selected. Press RADIO as necessary to select FM or AM radio. When FM radio is selected, Radio Data System (RDS) information for the current station is displayed, controlled by the RADIO TEXT setting. To view only the station frequency, set RADIO TEXT to OFF.
Tuning to an FM/AM station
When tuning, the frequency appears on the display. Use the Seek/Track buttons to find stations with strong signals or the Tune/MP3 buttons to manually tune to a specific frequency. Press and hold these buttons for rapid frequency changes.
Note: For weak AM reception, rotate the system. For weak FM reception, straighten the power cord or install an external FM antenna.
Storing FM/AM radio station Presets
You can store up to six FM and six AM radio stations for quick recall using the PRESETS buttons. Tune to the desired station, then press and hold one of the six PRESETS buttons until a double tone is heard and the preset number and station frequency appear on the display. Pressing a PRESETS button later will quickly tune to the stored station.
Improving FM reception
Ensure the power cord is unwound and straightened, as it acts as an FM antenna. For better reception, consider installing an external FM antenna.
Listening to DIGITAL RADIO
The system can receive Band III digital radio broadcasts (DAB, DAB+ and DMB formats). After selecting a DIGITAL RADIO station, information about the station is displayed.
The first time DIGITAL RADIO is selected, the system scans for available stations. If you cannot receive certain stations, install the included external antenna.
Tuning to a digital radio station
Digital radio tunes to stations alphabetically by station name. Use Seek/Track to tune to the next or previous station. You can also browse through available stations by pressing and holding Seek/Track.
Storing digital radio station presets
Similar to FM/AM radio, you can store up to six DIGITAL radio stations for quick recall using the PRESETS buttons. Tune to a station, press and hold a PRESETS button until a double tone is heard, and the preset number and station information are displayed.
Primary stations and secondary services
Primary digital radio stations broadcast similarly to FM. Secondary services are associated with primary stations and may broadcast different or periodic program material. If signal strength drops, “UNAVAILABLE” or “OFF AIR” may be displayed.
Re-scanning digital radio stations
You can re-scan for digital radio stations by selecting DIGITAL RADIO, pressing and holding Autoscan, and then confirming with Preset 3. The system will display “PLEASE WAIT SCANNING” and then play the first primary station.
Displaying station information
You can cycle through different information displays for the currently playing digital station by pressing the Play Mode button. Options include Station name, Current program content, and Program type.
Displaying station signal strength
Press and hold Play Mode to view the signal strength of the current station, displayed as a percentage and its classification (Low, Poor, Moderate, Good, Very Good).
Playing audio CDs
Insert the CD, label side up, into the CD slot. The disc player will pull the disc in and begin playing. Use the remote control buttons for playback functions like play/pause, skip track, scan, and stop/eject.
When playing an audio CD, source information is displayed, including selected source, play mode, clock time, track number, and elapsed track time.
- Press Play/Pause to pause or resume playback.
- Use Seek/Track to skip to the beginning of the current or previous track, or to skip to the next track.
- Use Tune/MP3 to scan backward or forward quickly through a track.
- Press Stop/Eject to stop a CD. Press and hold Stop/Eject to stop and eject the CD.
Notes:
- A stopped CD will resume playback from where it was stopped.
- If a CD is ejected but not removed within 10 seconds, it will be pulled back into the player.
CAUTION: Do not insert mini CDs or non-circular CDs, as they may not play properly and could interfere with ejection.
Playing MP3 CDs
The system can play MP3 music files from CD-R and CD-RW discs. Use the same remote control buttons as for audio CDs. Navigate through music files using the Tune/MP3 and Seek/Track buttons.
When navigating an MP3 CD, the display shows folder number and track number. Once the track begins playing, artist name, song title, and elapsed track time are displayed if available.
Notes:
- The system displays artist name and song title information when available on music file CDs.
- MP3 CD audio quality depends on factors like encoded bit rate and sampling rate. The system supports MP3 CDs encoded at bit rates of 64kbps or higher and sampling rates of 32kHz or higher. A bit rate of 128kbps and a sampling rate of 44.1kHz are recommended.
- Playback quality of recorded CD-R and CD-RW discs depends on the recording process and software used.
CD Play Modes
While a CD is playing, you can change the playback mode by repeatedly pressing the Play Mode button. Available modes include:
- NORMAL PLAY: Plays tracks once in sequential order.
- SHUFFLE DISC: Plays all tracks once in random order.
- SHUFFLE RPT: Repeats all tracks in a random order that changes each time.
- REPEAT DISC: Repeats the disc from the beginning after the last track.
- REPEAT TRACK: Repeats the selected track continuously.
- SHUFFLE FLDR: Plays all tracks in the selected folder in random order (MP3 only).
- SHUF RPT FDR: Repeats all tracks in the selected folder in random order (MP3 only), changing each time.
- SHUFF RPT CD: Repeats all tracks on a disc in a random order that changes each time.
- REPEAT FOLDER: Repeats all tracks in a folder in order (MP3 only).
Note: The play mode returns to NORMAL PLAY whenever a CD is inserted.
Setting and Using the Alarms
Alarm buttons and indicators
The system has two alarms, Alarm 1 and Alarm 2. Each alarm can be set for time, volume, and wake-up source (buzzer, radio, or CD).
Using the Alarm buttons
Use the Alarm buttons on the remote to set up and operate each alarm:
- Press ALARM 1 to turn Alarm 1 on or off.
- Press ALARM 2 to turn Alarm 2 on or off.
- Press SETUP to enter the Alarm Setup mode. Press again to view Alarm 2 settings, and again to exit the Alarm Setup mode.
Alarm status indicators
The upper right-hand corner of the display shows alarm status indicators if an alarm is set.
Setting the alarms
You can choose settings for each alarm by activating the Alarm Setup mode:
- Press Alarm Setup. The alarm number and time will flash, then the current Alarm 1 settings will be displayed.
- Use the Time buttons to set the alarm time.
- Select your wake-up source: BUZZER (factory setting), RADIO, or CD.
- Press + or – to set the volume level of the selected wake-up source.
- Press SETUP to enter the Alarm 2 setup mode. Repeat steps 2-4 to set up Alarm 2.
- Press SETUP again to exit the Alarm Setup mode.
The display will show the set alarm time and number.
Using the alarms
Turning an alarm on or off
Press ALARM 1 or ALARM 2 to turn the selected alarm on or off. When an alarm is turned on, the alarm number and time appear in the upper right corner of the display.
Snoozing an alarm
Tap the touch pad or press SLEEP on the remote. “SNOOZE” is displayed for the duration of the snooze time, and then the alarm sounds again. The snooze time is set at the factory to 10 minutes.
Stop and reset a sounding alarm
Press the STOP ALARM button.
Reset a snoozed alarm for the next day
After snoozing the alarm, place your hand on the touch pad again and hold it for at least 2 seconds, or press Stop Alarm.
Connecting Other Equipment
System connections
The rear panel of the system provides connections for external equipment:
- (1) ANTENNAS: 3.5 mm FM antenna and 2.5 mm DAB antenna connectors. See “Using an external antenna” on page 14.
- (2) Bose link: An input that accepts the output of another Bose link-enabled product via a Bose link cable.
- (3) AUX IN: 3.5 mm stereo input connector for external sources.
- (4) HEADPHONES: A 3.5 mm stereo headphone connector.
Using a cable to connect an audio device
To enhance your listening experience, connect an audio device (TV, DVD player, computer, video game) to the system via the AUX IN connector. This requires a 3.5 mm audio cable or a 3.5 mm to stereo RCA cable.
- Connect your audio device to the AUX IN connector using an appropriate cable.
- Press the AUX button on the remote.
- Start playing music on the audio device.
- Press and hold + or – to adjust the volume.
Note: If the system's volume cannot be adjusted high enough, increase the volume of the connected audio device.
Using headphones
For private listening, plug headphones into the headphone connector on the rear panel. Plugging in headphones automatically mutes the speakers. Lower the system volume before connecting or disconnecting headphones, as headphone volume levels may vary.
CAUTION: Long-term exposure to loud music may cause hearing damage. Avoid extreme volume, especially for extended periods.
Notes:
- While using headphones, alarms will be heard through the system speakers.
- Adjust headphone volume by pressing and holding + or –.
Using an external antenna
The system's power cord acts as an FM antenna. If reception is poor, consider installing an external antenna. An external dipole antenna can be ordered through Bose Customer Service.
Installing an external FM radio antenna
- Insert the 3.5 mm plug of the FM antenna into the FM ANTENNA connector.
- Extend the antenna ends as far from the unit and other equipment as possible for optimum reception.
Installing an external DIGITAL RADIO antenna
A DAB external dipole antenna is included with your system.
- Insert the 2.5 mm plug of the DAB antenna into the DAB ANTENNA connector.
- Extend the antenna in a vertical orientation.
- Press and hold the Mute button to re-scan for digital stations.
- Tune and check for previously missing or poorly-received stations.
Note: Many FM radio stations transmit a vertically polarized signal. If horizontal orientation does not provide good reception, try hanging the antenna in a vertical orientation.
Personalizing the System
The setup menu
The setup menu allows you to customize system operation. Access it by pressing and holding Alarm Setup/Menu until “– SETUP MENU –” is displayed.

Changing a system setting
- Press and hold Alarm Setup/Menu until “– SETUP MENU –” is displayed.
- Press Tune/MP3 to skip to the desired menu item.
- Press Time + or Time – to change the setting.
- Press Alarm Setup/Menu to exit the setup menu or wait 10 seconds for it to exit automatically.

Replacing the remote control battery
Place the remote face down on a flat surface. Use your finger to push the tab lock to the side and slide the battery compartment open. Remove the old battery and install the new one with the plus (+) symbol facing up. Gently slide the battery compartment closed.
WARNING: Keep batteries away from children. Do not ingest batteries. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention. Batteries may explode or cause chemical burns if mishandled. Replace only with an agency-approved CR2032 or DL2032 3-volt lithium battery. Dispose of used batteries promptly.
Cleaning
Clean the system surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use sprays, solvents, chemicals, or cleaning solutions containing alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives. Do not allow liquids to spill into any openings.
