Canine Dental Surgery Package (1025648, 1026125) Components:

Cleaning

The soft skin of the canine dental model may feel slightly oily, which is normal for silicone. All components, both hard and soft, should be cleaned periodically using a mild detergent and lukewarm water. Never use harsh chemicals or cleaners, as this can damage the soft components.

General Maintenance

Periodically inspect the unit for damaged components. If any soft components are damaged, they can be repaired with aquarium-quality, preferably clear, silicone adhesive. Replacement parts are available if repair is not possible.

The canine dental surgery model is supplied fully assembled. Familiarizing yourself with the placement and positioning of the components will facilitate the correct replacement of consumable or damaged parts. The model's head component is designed for high realism and responsiveness, which contributes to its sensitive skin. Handle with care during transport and storage to prevent damage.

Upper Jaw Bone Installation

Gently pull the upper lips of the model's snout backward (inferiorly) from both sides until the snout reveals the mounting surface and rails for the upper jaw bone inside the mouth. Using your thumb and index finger, gently spread the upper lips to create space for the upper jaw bone. Align the mounting rails on the head with the slots on the upper jaw bone and carefully slide the upper jaw bone into the mouth until it clicks into place. Be careful not to pinch the inner lip, which could cause tearing. Finally, roll the snout forward and gently pull the snout/skin forward to ensure the upper jaw bone's mounting tongue is securely seated in the pocket of the snout's skin. Applying a small amount of petroleum jelly can facilitate a smoother installation.

Upper Jaw Bone Removal

Gently roll the snout backward (caudally) by holding the upper lips on both sides until the mounting section of the upper jaw bone is free from under the snout. The snout and lips will remain in the everted position. To avoid damaging the model, refrain from pushing the snout downward from the point where the mounting plate is visible. To remove the upper jaw bone from the head, use your thumb to hold the colored tab and hook your index finger behind a canine tooth, then pull upward (rostrally) until it disengages from both mounting rails. It should release with minimal force from the mounting rails. Avoid leaving the snout everted for extended periods, as this may deform the silicone rubber head.

Lower Jaw Bone Installation

A small amount of Vaseline can facilitate the insertion of the lower jaw bone. Align the two stainless steel mounting pins with their corresponding holes in the dentary bone. Insert the lower jaw bone by sliding it onto the two pins and moving it towards the tail, pressing it into the ventral aspect of the suprahyoid region. Ensure the tongue mount sits comfortably within the lower jaw bone and that the silicone is not pinched beneath the lower jaw bone. Gently pull the distal end of the lower lip forward and dorsally to seat the lower lip onto the lower jaw bone's mounting wings. To attach the tongue, locate the two plastic mounting posts in the lower central part of the mouth and align them with the corresponding holes on the base of the tongue. Insert the rear hook first, then pull the tongue forward and secure it over the front hook.

Lower Jaw Bone Removal

First, gently pull the tongue upward/forward to release it from the front plastic mounting support, then apply the same action to the rear support. The lower jaw can be removed without removing the tongue, but replacing the dentary is easier when the tongue is removed. Pull the distal end of the lower lip forward and downward (ventrally) to release it from the jaw mounting wing. To remove the jaw, turn the head over and grasp the skull, then hold the jaw with your thumb and index finger and pull it forward until it completely disengages from the two stainless steel mounting pins; you may need to gently move it side-to-side during this process. Remember that applying excessive force or torque to the metal pins can damage the jaw.

Clamp Mount Installation

Locate the threaded socket at the caudal end of the dog's head. Screw the end of the adjustable arm into this threaded socket. The clamp at the other end of the arm opens by turning the knob to the closed position and can be secured to a table or similar stable work surface. Secure the clamp firmly to the work surface. Move the head and adjustable arm to position the head. Once in the desired position, lock the arm by tightening the center knob, thereby preventing all movement of the arm. Avoid over-tightening, as this may damage the arm.

Please note that the clamp is intended for mounting the head in a horizontal position rather than a vertical one. This ensures the Canine Dental Head remains stable during dental procedures.

Functions, Anatomy, and Surgical Procedures

The following anatomical features are represented in the canine dental model:

The following dental surgical procedures can be demonstrated:

* The extraction jaw set is not designed for the application of radiographic techniques. The radiographic image quality will vary depending on the equipment used. For quality radiographic images, only the X-ray jaw set (1025651) should be used. The X-ray jaw set (1025651) does not come with the surgical model and must be purchased separately.
