Smart Cartridge Manual and Precautions
This manual provides instructions and troubleshooting tips for using smart ink cartridges with Canon printers.
Suitable for Following Canon Cartridges
This smart cartridge is compatible with the following Canon cartridge numbers:
- Canon 810/811/210/211/310/311/510/511/512/513/815/816
- 48/58/145/146/245/246/345/346/445/446/545/546/645/646/745/746/845/846
- CANON 87/88/97/98/140/141/240/241/340/341/440/441/540/541/640/641/740/741/840/841
I. Pre-installation Check: Nozzle Test Sheet
Please ensure the nozzle test sheet from your original cartridge is normal before installation. The original cartridge should not have been previously pried open or refilled, and its appearance should be in good condition.

If the nozzle test sheet shows missing lines or colors (1-2, 1-3), please refer to the solutions section.
II. Original Cartridge Preparation
-
2-1. Pry off cartridge cap
Use a screwdriver to carefully pry off the cartridge cap from the original cartridge's welding point.

IV. Smart Cartridge Installation
Take out the smart cartridge and insert it into the original cartridge according to the corresponding colors. Press down firmly to ensure it is seated correctly.
After inserting the smart cartridge, tear off its seal. It is recommended to perform a head cleaning cycle on your printer after installation. Check the nozzle test sheet again. If there is only a slight line missing, perform head cleaning once more.
V. Handling "Ink Used Up" Notifications
During printing, if your printer indicates that the ink is used up (5-1), you can reset the ink level indicator. Press and hold the printer's [Restore Button] for more than 5 seconds. The ink volume indicator should then change to grey, allowing you to continue printing.
Potential Problems and Resolutions
-
I. Nozzle test sheet is line missing or color missing.
- Check the cartridge appearance and ensure the print head is not damaged. Do not use original empty cartridges that are already problematic.
- Original cartridge unused for a long time: Due to environmental factors (climate, temperature, humidity), the cartridge nozzle may dry out if unused for 10 days or more. This can cause line missing, color missing, or incomplete printing.
Resolution: Soak the cartridge nozzle in hot water (around 70°C) for approximately 2cm depth for about 30 minutes. Gently wipe off water from the print head and chip contact with tissue paper. Lightly press the nozzle bottom onto tissue paper to check if water traces are well distributed.
a) If water distribution is uneven, prolong the soaking time.
b) If water distribution is even, install the smart cartridge and perform head cleaning to check the result.
c) If the issue persists after these steps, the printer head may be damaged, and a new original cartridge may be required. - Original cartridge recently used up or stored for less than 10 days: Install the smart cartridge and perform head cleaning. If only slight line missing occurs, try head cleaning again or wait several hours before testing.
-
II. Print head inspection is normal, but printing is line missing or blank after installing smart cartridge.
- Line missing: Perform head cleaning again if the line missing is slight.
- Print blank:
a) Verify that the smart cartridges are installed in the correct position.
b) Ensure the cartridge's yellow seal has been properly removed. - After printing for a period or a certain number of pages, check if the ink inside the smart cartridges is depleted. If so, replace with a new set of smart cartridges.
-
III. Printer could not detect the cartridge after installation.
- Remove the cartridge and check if the smart cartridge is pressed down to the correct position.
- Inspect the head chip contact for any damage.
-
IV. Slight ink leakage during installation.
To maximize printing pages, the prefilled ink is at saturation point. This may cause a small amount of ink leakage during installation, which will not affect normal printing. Use tissue paper to wipe off any leaking ink to prevent staining.
-
V. No ink pumping system for some Canon printers.
Printers without an ink pumping system may struggle to draw ink to the cartridge nozzle during cleaning cycles, potentially causing line missing or color missing. Use the provided draw tools to draw ink out and wipe off any stains with tissue paper. These draw tools are suitable for the 210/211/510/511/512/513/745/746/810/811 series and are designed with black and color silicon components.

Cautions
- Avoid direct sunshine.
- Due to saturated ink, use smart cartridges immediately after unpacking to prevent color mixing in color cartridges.
- Exercise caution during installation to avoid staining hands or other articles.
- Protect the cartridge head and nozzle carefully during the process.
- If the printer is not used for an extended period, the nozzle may dry out. Print at least one test page per week to maintain nozzle condition.
- If line missing or color missing occurs after some printing, check the ink volume and replace the smart cartridge promptly.
Important Hints (For Printers Without Ink Pumping System)
For Canon printers without an ink pumping system (e.g., cartridges numbered 47/57, 145/146, 245/246, 545/546, 645/646, 745/746, etc.):
Because these printers lack an ink pumping system, ink may not flow to the cartridge nozzle during cleaning. This could shorten the print head's life or cause damage if operation continues. Therefore, each time you initially install a compatible smart cartridge (47/57, 145/146, 245/246, 545/546, 645/646, 745/746), please draw out approximately 1ml of ink. This procedure helps prolong the print head's life and allows for more pages to be printed.
VII. When to Change Smart Cartridge
You should change your 47/57, 145/146, 245/246, 545/546, 645/646, 745/746 smart cartridge if you encounter the following situations, which may occur when the cartridge is nearly empty:
- The document tail shows line missing (6-2), which persists even when printing a new page.
- The document tail is missing entirely (6-3), which persists even when printing a new page.
If these situations occur, replace the smart cartridge. After changing, use the draw tools to draw out approximately 1ml of ink from the cartridge nozzle. Repeat this step every time you change to a new smart cartridge.
