1. Introduction

Thank you for your purchase of the US-101-485 as the USB to serial adapter. Featuring USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface technology, it converts USB to RS-485/422, allowing easy adoption for industrial machines with RS-485/422 interfaces. The US-101-485 is compatible with USB V1.0~2.0. Its electrical power is supplied from the USB port, requiring no external power adapter. You can connect a PC USB port or USB hub to the US-101-485 via the USB cable and its High-Speed RS-485/422 serial port, which offers easy connectivity for traditional serial devices in your working environments.

The US-101-485 offers internal surge-protection on RS-485/422's data lines. Internal high-speed transient suppressors on each data line protect the US-101-485 from dangerous voltage levels or spikes.

4. Product Panel Views Description

US-101-485 Product Views

USB Type A Connector

Power Outlet: The US-101-485 USB to RS-485/422 is powered by the USB port, providing a single 5V DC (Inner positive/outer negative) power supply and 500mA of current. Connect the USB cable between a PC USB port or USB hub and the US-101-485's USB port. The US-101-485's USB port is a USB Type A connector and is fully compatible with USB V1.1~2.0.

Serial I/O Port

Serial I/O Port of RS-485/422: To connect the serial data cable between the converter and the serial device, follow the parameter setup procedures to configure the converter (refer to the following chapters).

Terminator: The purpose of the terminator is for compensating signal attenuation in long-distance connections at RS-485/422. If switches 1 & 2 are set in the "ON" position, signal compensation will be activated. To disable this function, push switches 1 & 2 to the opposite position.

LED Indicators

SYS (Red): This is a power indicator. The SYS LED will be on when the power is on.

5. US-101-485 Driver Installation

When setting up the US-101-485 adapter for the first time, you must install the CP201x driver, referred to as "US-101-485 Driver", on your computer before connecting the device. Supported operating systems include Windows 98 / XP / 2000 / VISTA, Linux, and Mac. The utility CD is enclosed in the device box. All US-101-485 USB to RS-485/422 Adapters require the driver to be installed before use.

Driver Installation

Before connecting the US-101-485 adapter for the first time, install the driver software on your computer. The US-101-485 driver supports several operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.

A. Install CP210x_VCP_Win2K_XP software

Use the CD-ROM to find the adaptable OS for your computer equipment.

B. Choose "Next" Icon

If your computer is running a Windows OS, a pop-up screen titled "CP210x VCP Drivers for Windows 2000/XP on your computer" will appear. Click the "Next" icon to proceed to the next step.

C. Choose "Accept” item of license agreement

After reading the license agreement, if you agree to the terms, select the option "I accept the terms of the license agreement".

D. Choose destination location

This step allows you to select the destination location on your computer for saving the CP201x driver software.

E. Execute the program installation

Click the "Install" icon to begin the installation of the CP210x driver.

F. Install CP210x VCP Driver for Windows 2000/XP

After clicking the "Install" icon, the InstallShield wizard will install the Silicon Laboratories CP210x drivers for Windows 2000/XP to the selected installation location.

G. InstallShield Wizard Complete

The CP201x VCP driver has been successfully installed. Click the "Finish" icon to exit the wizard.

6. US-101-485 Hardware Installation & Setup

Hardware Installation

  1. Power on your computer and wait until the OS is ready after booting.
  2. A Type A USB cable has two distinct connectors for connecting the cable from a USB device to a computer or USB hub.
  3. Connect the USB cable between a PC USB port or USB hub and the US-101-485 adapter.
  4. Connect the serial port RS-485/422 equipment to the US-101-485 USB to serial adapter.

  1. After connecting the US-101-485 USB to serial converter, a message such as "New device has been connected" may pop up on the screen. However, the CT201x VCP driver needs to be installed on the PC in advance.
  2. The SYS indicator (red LED) will turn on, indicating that the US-101-485 USB to serial adapter is active.

Hardware Setup

Once the US-101-485 adapter has been successfully connected, you can configure more detailed parameters using your computer's management tools.

A. Into "Manage" icon in My Computer

Click the "My Computer" icon, then right-click the mouse. After clicking the "Manage" item on the list bar, the "Computer Management (Local)" window will pop up.

B. Choose "Device Manager" and click "Ports (COM & LPT)" in Device Manager

Click the "Device Manager" item. All devices on the computer will be listed on the right side of the screen. Then, click the "Ports (COM & LPT)" item to find COM devices.

C. Detail parameters of CP210x USB to UART Bridge Controller

Click "CP210x USB to UART Bridge Controller" to get more detailed information about the device.

D. Device general status of CP210x USB to UART Bridge Controller

This section displays the status of the device and some general product information. The COM port number of the device is also displayed.

E. "Port Settings" communication detail information

This is used for checking and setting more detailed parameters for device communication.

This displays the driver detail information as installed on your computer.
