Setting up your Blood Pressure Monitor

Loading the Batteries

  1. Open the battery cover at the back of the monitor.
  2. Insert three "AA" batteries, observing correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery cover.

Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended should be used. Batteries must be handled with care under adult supervision. If batteries leak and come into contact with skin or eyes, wash immediately with copious amounts of water.

Connecting the Cuff

  1. Insert the rubber tube plug of the cuff firmly into the cuff socket located on the side of the monitor to ensure there is no air leakage.
  2. The cuff should be ready to use. Ensure that the end is passed through the metal loop and the hook and loop fastening is facing outwards.

[Diagram Description: One diagram shows a cuff being threaded through a metal loop, with the hook-and-loop fastener visible. Another diagram shows the cuff's rubber tube being inserted into the monitor's socket. A third diagram shows the battery compartment with three AA batteries being inserted correctly.]

Replacing Batteries

When the LCD screen displays the low battery indicator 'Lo' ?⬇️, new batteries must be inserted immediately to ensure accurate results.

Rechargeable batteries with a voltage of 1.2V are not suitable for this product. Please dispose of batteries according to the battery manufacturer's instructions.

Putting on the Cuff

  1. Place the cuff 1-2 cm above the elbow joint.
  2. Place your arm on a flat surface with your palm facing up and the rubber tube running down the center of the arm.
  3. Turn the cuff end outwards and tighten it by pulling it through the metal loop and pressing the hook surface of the cuff onto the loop surface of the cuff.
  4. Use your free hand to adjust the tightness of the cuff until it is firm. You should be able to fit two fingers under the cuff for correct tightness.

[Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate placing the cuff on the arm above the elbow, ensuring the tube is centered, and tightening the cuff with hook-and-loop fasteners. A visual cue shows fitting two fingers under the tightened cuff.]

Measuring can be done over light clothing such as a shirt or blouse. However, if you have a weak pulse, it is recommended to test on a bare arm. Remove any tight or restrictive clothing from your arm, such as rolling up a shirt sleeve.

For guidance on which arm to use, please refer to 'Your first test' on page 8.

The cuff can be cleaned by hand with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and towel dry. DO NOT IRON.

Using your Blood Pressure Monitor

Your First Test

The British Hypertension Society (BHS) recommends testing both arms for your first measurement. (Note: Ensure you do not have any medical conditions that would prevent measurement in both arms). This helps determine which arm is best for future measurements. Record the systolic (high number) reading from both arms. The arm with the higher systolic reading should be used for subsequent tests.

Example:

In this example, the left arm would be used for future testing.

Setting the Time and Date

After inserting batteries and closing the cover, the display will flash the year (e.g., 2015). Use the MEM button to adjust the year, then press SET. The display will show Day/Month. Use MEM to adjust the Day, SET to select the Month, MEM to adjust the Month, SET to adjust hours and minutes, and MEM for the final time format (12 or 24 hour). Press START/STOP to save and exit.

The time and date settings are retained even when batteries are removed. To re-adjust, remove and reinstall batteries. If no change is needed after battery replacement, simply press START/STOP to cancel.

Starting a Measurement

  1. Sit at a table with your arm supported at heart level for optimal results.
  2. Place the cuff on your selected arm (refer to 'Your first test'). Ensure the cuff is secure and not inflated around an unwrapped arm.
  3. Once comfortable, press the START/STOP button to begin automatic inflation.

If you experience any discomfort or pain during measurement, press the START/STOP button immediately, remove the cuff, and consult a healthcare professional.

Measuring Process

This monitor uses "Measure While Inflate" technology. Measurement occurs as the cuff inflates, rather than waiting for full inflation then deflating.

During inflation, the display shows:

[Diagram Description: A diagram shows the monitor's LCD screen during measurement, displaying a progress bar, cuff pressure (e.g., "190 mmHg"), and time/date (e.g., "AM 08:32"). A note indicates the pulse detection symbol appears when a pulse is detected.]

If an error or abnormal reading occurs, please refer to the "Abnormality & Troubleshooting" section.

What the Results Mean

After each measurement, the LCD screen displays systolic pressure, diastolic pressure (in mmHg), and pulse rate (in pulse/min).

Record the date, time, systolic reading, diastolic reading, and pulse rate on the provided record card. Note any factors that may have influenced the reading (e.g., stress, anxiety). This helps monitor trends and is useful for doctor visits.

Measurements should ideally be taken at the same time, under the same conditions, and in the same position each time for consistent results.

Blood pressure can fluctuate throughout the day. It is recommended to base readings on an average of multiple measurements. Do not panic if you get a higher-than-normal reading; relax for at least 10 minutes before re-measuring. Low blood pressure (Hypotension) and high blood pressure (Hypertension) can only be diagnosed by a qualified healthcare professional.

To get an accurate value:

Re-measuring

To perform another measurement, press the START/STOP button twice. Leave at least three minutes between measurements to allow blood circulation to return to normal. Avoid taking too many measurements in one session, as it may cause discomfort.

If you feel any discomfort or pain, turn off the monitor and remove the cuff immediately.

Shut Down

Turn the unit off after measurement if not re-measuring. The unit has an automatic 'switch off' mechanism and will turn off after 2 minutes of inactivity.

Memory

The memory can store up to 90 sets of measurements, automatically saved after each reading.

To check the memory, press the MEM button (either after a measurement or while the unit is off). Use the MEM button to scroll up or the SET button to scroll down through individual memories.

The most recent measurement is stored in memory slot 1. Once all 90 slots are filled, the oldest memory will be erased to make room for new readings.

Deleting the Memory

With the unit off, press the MEM button to turn it on, then press and hold the SET button for 4 seconds. Press SET again to toggle between 'DEL NO' and 'DEL YES'. Confirm by pressing the START/STOP button.

This procedure deletes the entire memory bank, not just a single measurement. Once deleted, the memory cannot be recovered.

Additional Information on Blood Pressure

Your heart functions like a pump, circulating blood through all blood vessels. Blood pressure measures the force exerted on the walls of blood vessels by the blood. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart pumps blood out, and diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart rests between beats, reflecting arterial resistance to blood flow.

Blood pressure is typically written as: 120/80 mmHg (systolic/diastolic).

Fluctuation of Blood Pressure

Blood pressure fluctuates constantly throughout the day. It is generally higher during the daytime and lower at night, reaching its lowest point around midnight. Pressure begins to rise again in the early morning. Due to these natural fluctuations, it is impossible to get a consistent reading at all times. Therefore, it is important to take measurements at the same time each day.

[Diagram Description: A simplified diagram of a human heart is shown with arrows indicating blood flow. Labels indicate "Systolic" and "Diastolic" pressure concepts related to the heart's pumping action.]

Recommended separation distance:
d = 1.167√P 80 MHz to 800 MHz
d = 2.333√P 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz
Where P is the maximum output power rating of the transmitter in watts (W) according to the transmitter manufacturer and d is the recommended separation distance in metres (m). Field strengths from fixed RF transmitters, as determined by an electromagnetic site surveyª, should be less than the compliance level in each frequency range.b Interference may occur in the vicinity of equipment marked with the following symbol: ?

NOTE 1: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency range applies.

NOTE 2: These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by absorption and reflection from structures, objects and people.

ªField strengths from fixed transmitters, such as base stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and land mobile radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio broadcast and TV broadcast cannot be predicted theoretically with accuracy. To assess the electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF transmitters, an electromagnetic site survey should be considered. If the measured field strength in the location in which the Digital Blood Pressure Monitor is used exceeds the applicable RF compliance level above, the Digital Blood Pressure Monitor should be observed to verify normal operation. If abnormal performance is observed, additional measures may be necessary, such as reorienting or relocating the Digital Blood Pressure Monitor.

bOver the frequency range 150 KHz to 80 MHz, field strengths should be less than 3V/m.

1 1.167 2.333
10 3.689 7.379
100 11.667 23.333

For transmitters rated at a maximum output power not listed above, the recommended separation distance d in metres (m) can be estimated using the equation applicable to the frequency of the transmitter, where P is the maximum output power rating of the transmitter in watts (W) according to the transmitter manufacturer.

NOTE 1: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency range applies.

NOTE 2: These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by absorption and reflection from structures, objects and people.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between systolic and diastolic pressure?

Your heart functions like a pump, circulating blood through all blood vessels. Blood pressure measures the force on the wall of the blood vessels caused by the pressure of the blood. Systolic pressure is the pressure of the blood when your heart beats to pump blood out. Diastolic pressure is the pressure of the blood when your heart rests in between beats, reflecting how strongly your arteries are resisting blood flow.

What if I want to retest?

If you want to measure again, press the START/STOP button twice. Leave at least three minutes between measurements to allow blood circulation to the arm to return to normal. Do not measure your blood pressure too many times in one session, as it may cause discomfort in the arm.

When is the best time to test my blood pressure?

Blood pressure fluctuates constantly during the day. It is higher in the daytime and lowest at midnight, rising again in the early morning. It is impossible to get a consistent reading at all times. For this reason, please take your measurements at the same time of day. Relax for 10-20 minutes before measuring and remain relaxed during the process. Do not move or talk during measurement, as this affects accuracy. Measure one hour after eating and avoid measuring immediately after bathing. Measure one hour after smoking or drinking alcohol/coffee.

Do I need to test at the same time, every time?

We recommend that measurements are taken at the same time, under the same conditions, and in the same position each time, because blood pressure constantly fluctuates depending on the time of day. This helps you keep a more accurate record over time and reduce any possible variances in your readings.

What if I get an error or abnormal reading?

Please see the "Abnormality & Troubleshooting" section at the end of this manual.

How do I know when I need to change the batteries?

When the Low Battery Indicator 'Lo' ?⬇️ is displayed, new batteries must be inserted immediately to ensure accurate results. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries.
