This document provides instructions and safety information for the Chapin Home & Garden Tank Sprayers, models 16200 (2 Gallon) and 16100 (1 Gallon).
Important Safety Warnings
WARNING: Improper use or failure to follow instructions can result in explosive failure causing serious eye or other injury. Always read and follow all instructions. Do not leave a pressurized sprayer in the hot sun. Heat can cause pressure build-up. Do not store or leave solution in the tank after use. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and full foot protection when spraying. Never use tools to remove the pump if there is pressure. Never stand over the tank when pumping or loosening the pump. Never pressurize the sprayer with anything other than the original pump. Do not modify the sprayer. Replace parts only with original manufacturer's parts. Never spray flammable, caustic, acidic, chlorine, bleach, or other corrosive solutions, or heat, pressure, or gas-producing chemicals. Always read and follow chemical manufacturer's instructions before use.
Assembly and Use Instructions
1. Hose to Tank
Insert the outlet tube portion of the discharge assembly into the tank adapter (Fig. 1A). Firmly insert the outlet tube into the tank adapter, ensuring no gap between the tank adapter and outlet tube adapter. Firmly tighten the retaining nut to the tank adapter (Fig. 1B, 1C).
2. Extension Wand to Shut-off
Loosen the retaining nut from the shut-off (Fig. 2A). Insert the extension wand into the end of the shut-off until the line marked on the wand is no longer visible. Tighten the retaining nut (Fig. 2C).
3. Pre-Use Check
- Check tightness of the hose nut to ensure the hose is securely attached to the tank outlet.
- Inspect the hose for deterioration, cracks, softness, or brittleness. Replace if any of these conditions are found.
- Remove the pump and inspect the interior and exterior of the tank for signs of deterioration. If any signs are found, discard the tank immediately. Do not attempt to patch leaks.
- Follow Filling, Pressurizing, and Spraying Instructions, but use only water. Pump 10-20 strokes and inspect for leaks.
- Direct the shut-off away from you and open it to ensure the discharge is not clogged.
- If the unit passes the water test, release pressure, empty the tank, and proceed with filling and spraying instructions.
- Inspect all metal parts (wand, nozzle, fittings) for rust, corrosion, and pitting. Replace affected parts if necessary.
4. Filling
- Turn the pump handle counterclockwise and remove the pump.
- Prepare the spray solution according to the chemical label's directions and safety warnings.
- Fill the tank to no more than the proper gallon marker. Do NOT overfill.
- Check the pump to ensure no debris is stuck to the barrel. Replace the pump in the tank and tighten securely.
5. Pressurizing and Spraying
- Turn the handle clockwise to tighten. Push the handle down and turn 1/4 turn counterclockwise to release (Fig. 5A).
- Pump until you feel resistance (Fig. 5B).
- Push the handle down and turn 1/4 turn clockwise to lock. Begin spraying. Re-pump as required to maintain spray force (Fig. 5C).
- Turn the end of the nozzle to adjust the spray pattern (Fig. 5D).
6. To Release Pressure
With the pump facing away, turn the locked handle counterclockwise until air begins to escape. Stop turning when you hear air escaping. Keep the sprayer pointed away until all air has escaped.
7. Care, Storage and Maintenance
- Rinse the tank thoroughly with water only, empty, and refill with water. Pump 8-10 strokes. Ensure the wand and nozzle are thoroughly rinsed with water after each use.
- Open the shut-off and allow water to run through the discharge assembly.
- Release pressure, remove the pump, and empty the sprayer.
- Store the sprayer tank upside down, with the pump removed, in a warm, dry location.
- Periodically oil the pump by dropping 10-12 drops of light oil down the pump rod through the opening in the cover.
8. Fatigue-Free Spraying
To Lock: For constant spraying, push down on the shut-off handle and slide forward (Fig. 8A, 8B).
To Un-Lock: To release, press down and slide the handle back (Fig. 8C, 8D).
