Before You Begin

Essential Steps:

  1. Choose a control method (front panel or third-party controller).
  2. Plan the system: list sources, define Zones, determine speaker requirements, and assign locations.
  3. Perform basic setup via the front panel: configure inputs/outputs, assign outputs to Zones, and name sources/Zones.
  4. Connect sources and speakers.
  5. Set up advanced features like Groups, Sound Scenes, and Overrides.

Rack Mounting: The SF-16M can be shelf-mounted or installed in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Follow instructions for removing feet and using rack adapters.

Connections - Source Inputs

RCA Line Inputs: 16 inputs configurable as mono or stereo. Input configuration is done via the PC Setup Utility or front panel menu.

DB-25 Audio Connections: Used for linking SF-16M units or connecting to other Audio Authority matrix systems. The DB-25 loop output passes source inputs from the DB-25 or RCA inputs to the next chassis.

Speaker Outputs

The SF-16M provides 16 amplified speaker outputs. Factory default is mono, 50% volume, and muted. Outputs can be configured as mono or stereo.

Speakers and Impedance: Each output supports a 4 Ohm speaker load. Two 8 Ohm speakers can be connected in parallel per output. Avoid connecting multiple 6 Ohm or 4 Ohm speakers, or speakers wired in series.

Mono and Stereo: Outputs can be designated mono or stereo based on room acoustics and use. Mono is generally preferred for whole-house or commercial audio to simplify placement, while stereo is suitable for TV viewing or specific listening environments.

Third Party Control

The SF-16M integrates with third-party control systems via:

  • Serial (RS-232): Recommended for full functionality and customization.
  • Telnet (Ethernet): Reliable control with full functionality.
  • IR: Offers most available functions for basic installations.

Detailed serial command lists and IR hex codes are available on the Audio Authority website.

Configuration and Setup

Front Panel Configuration: Basic setup and control are available via the front panel controls, including Zone Control, System Control, Source Setup, Zone Setup, and System Setup.

  • Zone Control: Adjust volume, select sources, and manage loudness, bass, and treble for individual Zones.
  • System Control: Manage Groups, Overrides, and Sound Scenes.
  • Source Setup: Configure inputs as stereo or mono and adjust input gain.
  • Zone Setup: Assign outputs to Zones and configure stereo/mono settings.
  • System Setup: Adjust front panel settings, network status, update firmware, reboot, and perform factory resets.

PC Setup Utility: For advanced configuration, use the SF-16M Configurator software, available for download. This utility allows detailed control over DSP, scenes, overrides, and more.

FlexPort Module Details

Appendix A details the optional FlexPort modules (FPM-B, FPM-X, FPM-D, FPM-U) for expanding audio inputs. Rear panel connections and dipswitch settings for these modules are described, along with the FlexPort RJ-45 pinout.

FlexPort Module "Override" Button: Allows designated outputs to switch to a FlexPort input when the override button is pressed. This can be configured for momentary or toggle action.

Firmware Updates and Fuse Replacement

Firmware Update Procedure: Latest firmware can be downloaded from the Audio Authority website and installed via a USB drive inserted into the SF-16M's rear panel USB port.

Changing the Power Fuse: Instructions are provided for safely replacing the fuse, including identifying the correct fuse value and orientation for different voltage regions.

Serial and Ethernet Command List

Appendix D provides a comprehensive list of serial and Ethernet commands for controlling various functions of the SF-16M, including source selection, volume, mute, balance, tone control, EQ modes, overrides, and scene presets. These commands enable integration with automation systems.
