Warnings and Precautions
Handling Li-ion Cells:
All M7 devices contain an internal Lithium-thionyl Chloride (Li-Ion) battery and require proper handling during installation, use, and removal. Li-Ion cells store significant energy and react violently to moisture. Risk of fire or explosion arises from improper handling, mechanical, electrical, or thermal abuse. Batteries must NOT be subjected to:
- Short circuit
- Puncturing
- Recharging
- Crushing
- Incineration
- Immersion in water
- Exposure to temperature exceeding rated limits
Ensure units are not punctured or crushed during installation and decommissioning. In case of battery ignition, use ONLY Class D fire extinguishers. DO NOT USE: water, sand, CO2, Halon, dry powder, or soda ash extinguishers. Consult the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Lithium Thinoyl Chloride batteries for more information.
Disposal of Li-ion Cells:
Lithium Ion batteries are subject to local, state, and provincial disposal laws. They cannot be disposed of in regular trash. Check with your local landfill/recycling facility for hazardous waste disposal requirements and safe options.
1. Installation Document Requirements
For installation reference, bring the following documents:
- Control panel Installation & Operation Manual relevant to your equipment package
- Schematics of the asset you are working on (if applicable)
- M7 Installation Guide
The device installation may be nearby the asset's body, with a distance potentially less than 20 cm.
2. Electrical Requirements
The M7 requires the following electrical connections for power and signal:
- Power Supply Operational Range: Battery Supply = 6 – 90V DC
- Digital Input Signal Range:
- Logic High (true, ON) = 6 – 60V DC
- Logic Low (false, OFF) = -0.3 – 5V DC
- Digital Output Signal Range: Sinks voltage signals between -0.3 – 60V DC @ 200mA
- Analog Input Signal Range:
- Voltage = 0 – 60V DC
- Current = 4 – 20mA
3. Supplies
This section details the contents of the install kit and suggests additional supplies.
A. Available M7 Telematics:
Your kit includes:
- M7 device
- M7 Installation Guide
B. What is Not Included in the Kit:
Optional supplies you may need:
- Cable Ties
- Cable Tie Anchors
- Rubber Cable Gland
4. Location and Installation Considerations
The M7 device needs clear cellular and GPS signals. Choose mounting locations that allow unobstructed transmissions.
Optimal Mounting Locations:
- Horizontally mounted under a fiberglass or plastic hood
- Horizontally mounted on the equipment's top side, facing the sky
Other Mounting Orientations:
- Vertically on the side of the machine
- Inside the equipment/machine with an open view to the sky (e.g., Operator Cab)
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Avoid locations that limit communications, such as inside metal control cabinets or areas completely surrounded by metal. Mount the M7 where it will not be exposed to potential physical damage during normal equipment use.
5. Wiring
The M7 features a 36-inch wire harness with loose wires. Figure 1 shows the wire designations. Refer to Section 2: Electrical Requirements for detailed connection specifications.
Figure 1: 12-Pin Connector Pin References
| Pin | Wire Color | Designation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | RED | Batt + (6V to 90V DC) |
| 2 | BLK | Batt – (0 VDC) |
| 3 | WHT/BLK | GND |
| 4 | WHT | Input 1 |
| 5 | BLU | Input 2 |
| 6 | WHT/BRN | Analog 1 |
| 7 | GRN | Output 1 |
| 8 | WHT/VIO | Serial RX |
| 9 | WHT/GRY | Serial TX |
| 10 | ORN | Input 3 |
| 11 | YEL | CAN-High – J1939 |
| 12 | GRN | CAN-Low - J1939 |
6. Testing
After connecting and powering up the M7, confirm that the LEDs illuminate as shown in Figure 2.

FCC STATEMENTS
WARNING: Unauthorized modifications may void the user's authority to operate the equipment. This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules, subject to two conditions: (1) no harmful interference, and (2) acceptance of any received interference.
NOTE: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with Class B digital device limits (Part 15 FCC Rules), designed for reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. It may generate radio frequency energy and cause interference if not installed per instructions. If interference occurs, try measures like reorienting the antenna, increasing separation, using a different circuit, or consulting a technician.
SAR (Specific Absorption Rate):
The device's radiated output power is below FCC radio frequency exposure limits. Minimize human contact during operation. The SAR limit is 1.6 W/Kg. Tests are conducted at the highest certified power level, but actual operating SAR may be lower. The device operates at multiple power levels to conserve energy, with lower output closer to a base station. Minimize human proximity to the antenna to avoid exceeding FCC exposure limits.
Industry Canada Compliance
This device complies with Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS standard(s). Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) no interference, and (2) acceptance of any interference.
This EUT is in compliance with SAR for general population/uncontrolled exposure limits in ISED RSS-102 and had been tested in accordance with the measurement methods and procedures specified in IEEE 1528 and IEC 62209. This device and its antenna(s) must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.
