Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Yamaha Rio3224-D2/Rio1608-D2 Input/Output Rack. This unit is a Dante-compatible input/output rack for mixing systems. The Rio3224-D2 is an input/output rack with 32 analog inputs, 16 analog outputs, and 8 AES/EBU outputs. The Rio1608-D2 is an input/output rack with 16 analog inputs and 8 analog outputs. This manual explains the settings and troubleshooting procedures required by mixing engineers and operators when setting up or preparing a mixing system. To fully utilize the functions of this product, please read this owner's manual before use. After reading, please keep it for future reference.
Note:
- When the technical specifications for the Rio3224-D2 differ from those of the Rio1608-D2, specifications applicable only to the Rio1608-D2 are indicated in brackets (e.g., [INPUT] jacks 1-32{1-16}).
- Unless otherwise specified, illustrations in this manual use the Rio3224-D2.
- When technical specifications apply to both the Rio3224-D2 and Rio1608-D2, they are referred to collectively as "Rio-D2".
- The RIVAGE PM, CL, and QL series units can control the preamplifiers via a communication protocol that allows redundant connection. These units are referred to as "supported digital mixing consoles" in this manual. On the other hand, the TF series, Nuage, MTX, and R Remote units can control the preamplifiers via a communication protocol that does not allow redundant connection. In this manual, these are collectively referred to as "supported devices," including "supported digital mixing consoles."
Features
Dante Network Function
Using standard Ethernet cables with the Dante network protocol, low-latency, low-jitter audio can be transmitted between devices, up to a maximum distance of 100 meters*. The Rio-D2 can be used as a versatile Dante I/O interface. It supports sample rates of 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, and 96kHz. This unit supports AES67 for audio network interoperability and can connect audio to various compatible audio networks via AES67.
* Maximum transmission distance may vary depending on the cable used.
Display and Encoder for Enhanced Visibility and Operability
The front panel features an organic EL display and encoders with buttons and switches. Parameters such as internal preamp and HPF can be viewed and controlled via the Rio-D2. Internal errors and status of the unit are clearly displayed on the screen.
Remote Control of Internal Preamplifiers
Internal preamp parameters can be remotely controlled by supported devices.
Digital Output (Rio3224-D2 Only)
The Rio3224-D2 is equipped with XLR-3-32 type balanced connectors, enabling digital audio input via AES/EBU format.
Gain Compensation Function
If the Gain Compensation function is activated on a supported device (such as RIVAGE PM, CL, or QL series) or R Remote, fluctuations in analog gain will be compensated by the Rio-D2's internal digital gain. The audio signal will be output at the gain level to the Dante network, with the gain level fixed before the Gain Compensation function is enabled. For example, this means that if the same output is shared by FOH and monitor, changing the FOH gain will not affect the balance of the monitor mix.
Redundant Power Supply
Dual power supplies provide continuous operation in the unlikely event of a problem with one power supply unit.
Quiet Operation
Quieter operation is achieved by incorporating noise reduction measures for the fan.
Firmware Update
This product's firmware can be updated to improve operability, add functions, and resolve potential issues. The following two types of firmware are available for this unit:

Front Panel
1 [INPUT] Jacks 1-32{1-16}: These jacks are XLR-3-31 type balanced input jacks. Input levels range from -62 dBu to +10 dBu. +48V phantom power can be supplied to required devices via the input jacks.
2 [+48V] Indicator: These indicators light up when +48V phantom power is turned on for the corresponding input channel. Turning on/off can be controlled from the front panel display of this unit or from a compatible digital mixing console. However, if the [+48V MASTER] switch is off, phantom power will not be supplied even if the phantom power for individual channels is turned on (the +48V indicator will flash). If this unit has a serious error, all channel indicators will light up or flash.
Caution:
- If phantom power is not required, you must turn off the [+48V MASTER] switch or the phantom power setting.
- When turning on phantom power, ensure that no other devices (such as condenser microphones) are connected to the corresponding INPUT jacks. Applying phantom power to devices that do not require it may damage the connected devices.
- When connecting or disconnecting devices to the INPUT jacks while phantom power is on, do so carefully. Doing so improperly may cause malfunctions in the connected devices or the unit itself.
- To prevent potential damage to speakers, turn off the power amplifiers and/or active speakers when turning phantom power on or off. Also, it is recommended to turn the output volume knobs of all digital mixing consoles to the minimum when turning phantom power on or off. Sudden level peaks caused by the switching operation can damage the equipment and the audience.
3 [SIG] Indicator: These indicators light up green when the signal level for each channel reaches or exceeds -40 dBFS. If this unit has a serious error, all channel indicators will light up or flash.
4 [PEAK] Indicator: These indicators light up red when the signal level for the corresponding channel reaches or exceeds -3 dBFS. If this unit has a serious error, all channel indicators will light up or flash.
5 Display: Displays parameters for each port, such as preamp settings, or error and status indicators.
6 ◀(DEC) / ▶(INC) Buttons: Use these buttons to move the cursor on the display.
7 Encoder with Switch: Rotate to edit parameter values displayed on the screen. Press the encoder to select or confirm settings, or to switch displays.
8 Power Indicator: Lights up when the AC power to this unit is turned on.
9 Power Switch: Turns this unit on or off.
Caution: Even when the power is turned off, a small amount of current flows through the product. If you do not plan to use the product for an extended period, be sure to unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.
Note: Repeatedly turning the power on and off quickly can damage the unit. After turning off the power, wait about 6 seconds before turning it on again.
10 [+48V MASTER] Switch: This is the main switch for the unit's +48V phantom power. If the [+48V MASTER] switch is off, phantom power will not be supplied to the unit's input jacks, even if the phantom power for individual inputs is set to ON. In this case, the [+48V] indicator for the channels with phantom power turned on will flash.
11 [AES/EBU OUT] Jacks 1/2-7/8 (Rio3224-D2 Only): These XLR-3-32 type balanced jacks allow the unit to send digital audio signals in AES/EBU format from the corresponding output channels. Each jack can output a two-channel digital audio signal.
12 [OUTPUT +4dBu] Jacks 1-16 {1-8}: These XLR-3-32 type balanced jacks allow the unit to send analog audio signals from the corresponding output channels. The nominal output level is +4 dBu.
Note: If you must connect the unit's balanced output to an unbalanced device, ensure that the magnetic polarity of each device is matched, as differences in magnetic polarity may cause malfunctions. For cables connecting to unbalanced devices, connect pin 3 (COLD) to pin 1 (GND).
Rear Panel
13 [PRIMARY]/[SECONDARY] Jacks: These etherCON (RJ45) ports can be connected to other Dante devices using Ethernet cables (CAT5e or recommended cables), such as RIVAGE PM, CL, QL, or TF series units. If the SETUP menu's SECONDARY PORT parameter is set to DAISY CHAIN, signals input from one port will be sent to the next port. Refer to "Daisy Chain Network" in the "Connections" section (page 25) for more information on daisy chain networking. If the SETUP menu's SECONDARY PORT parameter is set to REDUNDANT, the [PRIMARY] port is used for the primary connection, and the [SECONDARY] port is used for the secondary (backup) connection. If, for any reason (such as cable damage or accidental disconnection, or network switch failure), the [PRIMARY] port of this unit cannot send signals, the [SECONDARY] port will automatically take over the connection. Refer to "Redundant Network" in the "Connections" section (page 25) for more information on redundant networks.
Note:
- It is recommended to use Ethernet cables with Neutrik etherCON CAT5e compatible RJ-45 connectors. Standard RJ45 connectors can also be used.
- STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cables are recommended to prevent electromagnetic interference. Ensure reliable connection between the metal part of the connector and the STP shield using conductive tape or a similar method; conductive performance must be good.
- Only connect Dante-compatible devices or GbE-compatible devices (including computers).
14 [LINK/ACT] Indicator: These green indicators show the connection status of the [PRIMARY] and [SECONDARY] jacks. They will flash rapidly if the Ethernet cable is connected correctly.
15 [1G] Indicator: These indicators flash when the Dante network is operating in Giga-bit network mode.
16 DIP Switches: These switches are for future functional expansion. Currently, no functions are assigned to these DIP switches.
17 AC Power Input: Connect the AC power cord here. First, connect the power cord to the unit, then connect the power cord to the AC outlet. The power cord features a special locking mechanism (V-LOCK) to prevent accidental disconnection. Insert the power cord fully until it locks. Connections
There are two ways to connect the Rio-D2 to a Dante network.
Note:
- Daisy chain connection is suitable for simple systems with a small number of devices. For connecting a large number of devices, please use a star network.
Daisy Chain Network
A daisy chain is a connection scheme where multiple devices are connected in sequence. This method simplifies networking and does not require a network switch. If you are connecting a large number of devices, you must set a high redundancy level to avoid audio dropouts caused by increased signal transmission delay between devices. If a connection in the daisy chain network is broken, the signal flow will be interrupted at that point, and no signal will pass through that point.
Star Network
In a star network, each device is connected to a central switch. Using a GbE-compatible network switch, you can configure large-bandwidth, large-scale networks. We recommend using network switches that support control and monitoring networks, and other features (such as QoS, which can assign priority to data streams - such as word clock synchronization or audio transmission on certain data loops). This technology is generally used for redundant networks, which can eliminate the impact of unexpected network issues on the stability of audio or data transmission.
Redundant Network
A redundant network consists of two loops: a primary and a secondary. Generally, the network operates on the primary loop. However, if the primary connection is interrupted, the secondary loop will automatically take over the connection. Therefore, using redundant networks with star topology can improve the stability of data exchange related to daisy chain networks.
Preamplifier Control
Dante Network Settings and Audio Routing
The Rio-D2 does not have functions to change Dante network settings such as sample rate, latency, or encoding. Dante network settings are controlled by Dante Controller or supported digital mixing consoles. For detailed information on Dante network settings, please refer to the owner's manuals of the respective supported digital mixing consoles.
The audio input and output of multiple Dante devices can be freely routed within the Dante network. This means that settings are required to specify the destination for each channel's signal transmission. Use Dante Controller to specify Dante network and audio routing settings.
The Dante Controller software can be downloaded from the following URL:
http://www.yamahaproaudio.com/
For details on Dante Controller, please refer to the Dante Controller owner's manual on the same website.
Remote Control
The Rio-D2's preamplifiers can be remotely controlled by host devices, such as compatible Yamaha digital mixing consoles.
