Introduction: The Need for Wireless Modbus
Traditional building automation systems often rely on extensive Modbus cabling, which can be costly and complex to install. This guide demonstrates how to connect your building automation system using wireless Modbus technology, eliminating the need for physical cables.

The diagrams show that Modbus cables are not required for installation, whether inside or outside the building. This highlights the advantage of wireless solutions.
Key Benefit: For installation, no Modbus cables are needed.
Product Variants: DIN Rail and Wall Mount
RG2i offers two primary form factors for the W-Modbus gateway to suit different installation environments:
- W-Modbus DIN rail: Designed for mounting on standard DIN rails.
- W-Modbus wall mount: A compact enclosure suitable for wall mounting.
You will need one of these devices for installation.
System Integration and Gateway Functionality
The W-Modbus device, often in conjunction with LumenRadio technology, acts as a gateway between your building management system and wireless Modbus devices.

[Diagram B: Wall mount setup showing W-Modbus device connected to a 'Building MGMT system' via a LumenRadio gateway.]
The LumenRadio device, positioned next to the Modbus master (client), functions as your gateway. Both DIN rail and wall mount options are available for integration.
Gateway Set-Up: Serial Configuration
Configure the serial communication parameters on your gateway (either DIN rail or wall mount) using the DIP switches.

DIP Switch Configuration Table:
Setting | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
9600 baud | OFF | OFF | - | - | - |
19200 baud | OFF | ON | - | - | - |
38400 baud | ON | OFF | - | - | - |
76800 baud | ON | ON | - | - | - |
No parity | - | OFF | - | - | - |
Even parity | - | ON | - | - | - |
1 stop bit | - | - | OFF | - | - |
2 stop bit | - | - | ON | - | - |
Use local serial config on Node | - | - | - | ON | - |
Use Gateway serial config on Node | - | - | - | OFF | - |
Use the DIP switches (1-5) to set your Baud rate, stop bit, and parity.
Installation Step 1: Initial Switch Configuration
Configure the initial switch setting on your chosen gateway device.
[Diagram A: Hand pressing switch on DIN rail device, moving it to 'COMM'. Close-up shows switch detail.]
[Diagram B: Hand pressing switch on wall mount device, moving it to [square symbol]. Close-up shows switch detail.]
Action:
- For DIN rail (A): Move the switch to "COMM".
- For wall mount (B): Move the switch to [square symbol].
After this step, proceed to install the LumenRadio node next to your field devices, beginning with the device closest to your gateway.
Installation Step 2: Connecting Nodes to Controllers
Connect the LumenRadio device (node) to your chosen field controller.
[Illustration: Example of connecting a node to a zone controller. A door is shown, a zone controller icon, and the LumenRadio device.]
Example: Node to Zone Controller
Connect the LumenRadio device with the chosen device (e.g., zone controller). You can optionally set a local Baud rate for this connection.
[Illustration: Example of connecting a node to a room controller. A door is shown, a room controller icon, and the LumenRadio device.]
Example: Node to Room Controller
Place the LumenRadio device preferably above the chosen device (e.g., room controller) and connect it. You can optionally set a local Baud rate.
Status Indicators: Pairing and Connection
Observe the LED indicators on the LumenRadio node to understand its status during the installation process.

Initial State: The lights on your node will now sweep in blue ?, indicating it is initializing.
[Diagram A: DIN rail device with blinking green lights.]
[Diagram B: Wall mount devices with blinking green lights.]
Gateway Discovery: When the lights start blinking green ✔️, the node has successfully found the gateway. This process can take up to five minutes.

Return to Gateway: After nodes connect to the gateway, you may need to return to the gateway for further configuration.

[Diagram B: Wall mount device with switch being moved to a square symbol. Close-up shows switch detail.]
Setting Gateway Mode:
- For DIN rail (A): Move the switch to "GATEWAY".
- For wall mount (B): Move the switch to [square symbol].

[Diagram B: Wall mount devices with blinking yellow lights.]
Secure Mode: The devices blink yellow ? entering secure mode. This process may take up to 5 minutes.
Finalizing Installation: Using the W-Modbus App
Once the installation is complete, you can verify and manage your system using the W-Modbus application.
[Illustration of a smartphone displaying 'W-Modbus app' with wireless signal icons.]
To prepare the gateway for connection with the W-Modbus app ?, press the button on the gateway three times. The gateway's indicator light should blink blue twice, signifying it is ready for connection.
Verify your installation in the app. For a detailed overview, select the 'Network Map' feature.
Congratulations! You now have a wireless connection ? for your building automation system.
