Important Note: Many items in this kit can also be everyday kitchen items. However, once used for candle making with fragrance oils or dyes, these items should be dedicated solely to candle making. Fragrance oils can degrade certain plastics, and items used for candle making should not be reused for food. Please read all instructions before starting.

Cleaning Tips: After pouring wax, clean the melting pot immediately by wiping away excess wax. Wash the pot with warm, soapy water.

How to make Homemade Scented Candles

  1. Prepare the Wick: Place a glue dot on the bottom of the white cotton wick. Peel off the other side of the glue dot to reveal the adhesive. Stick the wick to the inside bottom center of the candle tin. This anchors the wick. Stabilize the cotton wick with a bow tie clip.
  2. Melt the Wax: Use a double boiler method for safe and even melting. Weigh out 2.65oz of beeswax per candle tin. Pour the wax into the melting pot. Place the melting pot into a larger pot with 1-2 inches of water. Heat on the stove at medium heat.
  3. Monitor Temperature: Once the wax begins to melt, insert the digital thermometer into the melting pot. Stir the wax occasionally as it melts. Do not heat the wax above 200°F (93°C), as higher temperatures can cause discoloration. Always use a thermometer and never leave heated wax unattended.
  4. Add Color and Fragrance: When the wax reaches 185°F (85°C), shave pieces of the color dye block into the melted wax. Stir gently until the liquid appears uniform in color. Remove the double boiler from heat. Add fragrance oils to the melted wax. Adjust the amount based on desired scent strength. Stir to combine.
  5. Check Wax Temperature for Pouring: Stir the wax until it is smooth and has a clear liquid color. Ensure the wax is uniformly mixed. Check the temperature. It is generally safe to pour when the wax is around 130-160°F (54-71°C). Some prefer pouring at a lower temperature for smoother tops. If candle tops are not smooth, try pouring at a lower temperature or use a hairdryer or heat gun on the top after pouring.
  6. Pour the Wax: Stir the wax one more time. Find a flat surface. Slowly pour the wax into each candle tin, leaving about a quarter of an inch from the top. Hold the wick tip up as you pour. Do not disturb the containers until the wax is completely set.
  7. Cure the Candles: Allow candles to cure for 24-48 hours at room temperature.
  8. Finish the Candles: Once the wax is fully hardened, trim the wick to 1/4 inch above the candle surface. Place a warning label on the bottom of each container. Your candle is now finished and ready to burn.
