Introduction and Operator Focus

Fabtek is dedicated to being the most operator-oriented company in the game industry. This means providing clear instructions, useful information for maximizing earnings, and informing operators about proper game settings for different locations. Fabtek uses operator input to create games designed for operators, ensuring they have the necessary information for maximum profit.

Thank you for purchasing a Fabtek game. The Fabtek way is designed to bring operators back for more.

Important Warnings and Safety Precautions

Federal Crime Warning: Operating or possessing unauthorized or counterfeit game boards is illegal and constitutes a federal crime, subject to significant penalties ($250,000 or five years in prison per offense). Ensure all boards have the AAMA seal and notify Fabtek of any missing seals.

DANGER: High Voltage Hazard

  • The high voltage present on the monitor can be very dangerous. Extreme caution must be used when working with or around monitors.
  • Ensure the grounding strap is attached to the monitor frame.
  • The picture tube is a hazard and should be handled with care. Do not strike, scratch, or apply excessive pressure, as it may implode, causing serious injury from flying glass.
  • Ensure the control panel, power supply, and coin door are properly grounded to the ground wire inside the line cord. Do not remove the ground prong from the plug.
  • An isolation transformer must be used with the monitor and power supply for safety.
  • The game must be equipped with a three-wire 110-volt plug.

FCC Warning: This equipment generates and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not installed and used according to the manual, it may cause interference with radio communications. While temporarily permitted by regulation, it has not been tested for compliance with FCC rules designed to provide reasonable protection against interference. Users in residential areas causing interference will be required to correct it at their own expense.

General Safety: Always wear safety goggles when removing or replacing the monitor. Monitors may retain a charge for an extended period.

Installation Guide

To Disassemble an Existing Cabinet:

  1. Open the back door and remove the old board set and power supply (if using a new switching power supply).
  2. Remove marquee glass and monitor glass.
  3. Remove the control panel and set it aside.
  4. Remove the old wire harness, leaving the 110-volt wiring intact. Ensure grounding straps to the monitor, coin door, control panel, and power supply remain intact.

Installation Steps:

  1. Mount the board set on the side panel of the cabinet, approximately 10-12 inches off the bottom. Ensure the edge connector faces up. Avoid mounting directly below controls, vents, or cracks where liquids or dropped coins might reach the board.
  2. Mount the power supply on the bottom of the cabinet with connectors facing the rear. An optional mounting location is on the side panel below the board set, connector to the rear.
  3. If the game lacks an isolation transformer, install one between the 110-volt line and the monitor/power supply for customer and game safety.
  4. Connect the provided JAMMA wiring harness to the board. Connect the +5V, +12V, -5V, and ground wires to the corresponding lugs on the power supply. Failure to connect all wires may damage the board connector.
  5. Run a wire from -5 volts to the coin door lights and a wire from +12 volts to the coin counters.
  6. Connect the Audio (+) and Audio (-) wires to the speaker.
  7. Connect the video Red, Green, Blue, Ground, and Sync wires to the corresponding monitor connections. Refer to sync modifications charts if the monitor does not use negative composite sync.
  8. Cut the marquee to size, replace the marquee lamp if needed, and install the marquee panel.
  9. Connect the coin 1 and coin 2 wires to the coin switches. Connect the coin counter 1 and coin counter 2 wires to the coin counters. If only one coin counter is present, it will function correctly even if rated at 6 volts, as the pulse is short enough not to cause damage.
  10. Disassemble the control panel hardware. Do not remove the old panel overlay. Determine placement for new joystick and buttons, cutting new holes if necessary. For plexiglass overlays, use 1/2" polycarbonate with scratch-resistant coating (e.g., General Electric ALEXAN MR5 with margard or TUFFAK CM-2). Apply the new overlay over the old glue, using an Exacto knife to cut button/bolt holes. Apply decals for player controls. Assemble the control panel.
  11. Bolt the control panel to the cabinet. Connect player 1 and player 2 control wires (up/down, left/right, fire, jump, start) to the correct switches. 2P control wires are only needed for cocktail tables, not upright cabinets.
  12. Power up the game, listening for unusual sounds and checking for smoke or sparks. Wire tie all wires neatly. Clean the cabinet inside and out. Measure the +5 volts at the furthest point from the edge connector and adjust to 5.05 volts. Use tinted plex (bronze or grey) over the monitor if screen burns are present. Touch up the cabinet with fresh paint and repair dents/chips using an auto body product like Duraglass.

Cabinet Recommendations:

Fabtek recommends installing the Toki kit in a new or refurbished cabinet for optimal earnings. Installing in an older, heavily used cabinet may result in lower earnings. Recommended cabinet features include:

  • Horizontal monitor
  • 11 amp or larger power supply
  • Monitor not laid down flat

For arcade locations, the Dynamo 25-inch or KD 27-inch cabinet is recommended for a potential 20% increase in earnings due to the larger monitor size. The JAMMA connector allows for quick installation, often requiring only control panel wiring. 19-inch cabinets may be more suitable for smaller street locations.

Technical Specifications and Wiring

Monitor Requirements

Toki is designed for a horizontal raster scan monitor with negative sync (RGB). It will not work with X-Y monitors (e.g., Tempest, Space Dual, Star Trec). An isolation transformer is mandatory for safety, as monitors use extremely high voltages and can retain a charge.

JAMMA Connector and Wiring

The game utilizes a JAMMA 56-pin connector, a standard for operator-friendly features. This ensures consistent placement of video and joystick functions across different JAMMA-compatible games.

Happ Controls Joystick Information

The Happ Controls Spring Action Joystick features nylon and solid steel construction, spring return to center, and individually replaceable micro or leaf switches. It comes standard with a long shaft and a 1.5-inch diameter red knob. Detailed mounting dimensions, a parts list, and pricing for various configurations (8-way/4-way, micro/leaf switch, 1.25"/1.5" knob) are provided.

Star Tech Tips: Monitor Sync Solutions

These tips address common monitor sync issues:

  • CURE 1 (Horizontal Wave/Curl): For monitors with different negative sync signals, a circuit using a 74LS04 IC can be installed to correct the mismatch. Diagrams show how to "piggyback" the IC and connect the sync wires.
  • CURE 2 (Sync Correction): For Wells-Gardner Video-Sync boards with positive sync, traces on the board need to be cut, and an MPSA56 transistor and 1N4148 diode are added to correct sync. A diagram illustrates these connections.
  • CURE 3 (Horizontal Tearing): For GO7-CBO monitors, replacing capacitor C303 with a 10uf 25V radial lead capacitor and C501 with the original C303 capacitor can resolve horizontal tearing. Alternatively, 1N4148 fast-switching diodes can be connected across positive and negative sync inputs. For Wells-Gardner K4600 series monitors, specific capacitor replacements and adjustments to horizontal hold and width pots are recommended.
