Notice

This product is designed for continuous operation at ambient temperatures up to 104°F (40°C). It can operate at temperatures from 5°F (15°C) to 122°F (50°C) for short periods. Always operate outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from doors, windows, and vents. Maximum wattage and current are affected by fuel, temperature, altitude, and engine condition. Power decreases approximately 3.5% per 1,000 feet of altitude and 1% per 10°F (6°C) above 60°F (16°C).

Install Feet and Wheels

NOTICE: Install mounting feet and wheels before adding fuel or oil.

  1. Place the generator on a flat surface.
  2. Tip the generator onto cardboard or soft material to protect the frame paint.
  3. Install the mounting feet using the included wrench and bolts.
  4. Install the wheels using axle pins, washers, and cotter pins.

Note: Wheels are for hand transport only and not for towing.

Initial Oil Fill

NOTICE: The generator is shipped WITHOUT OIL. DO NOT attempt to start the engine before adding the recommended oil. Failure to do so will result in serious engine damage.

Use SAE 10W-30 engine oil. Refer to the chart for recommended oil types based on ambient temperature.

Steps:

  1. On a level surface, remove the oil dipstick.
  2. Using the supplied funnel, add oil to the oil filler neck. Add oil incrementally, checking the level near the end of the bottle to avoid overfilling.
  3. Wipe the oil dipstick clean, replace it, and hand-tighten.

Fuel

FUEL REQUIREMENTS: Use CLEAN, FRESH, unleaded gasoline, 87–93 octane. Up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) is acceptable; non-ethanol fuel is recommended. DO NOT use E85 or E15. DO NOT use a gas oil mix. DO NOT modify the engine for alternate fuels. DO NOT fuel indoors. DO NOT create sparks or flames while fueling.

Using Fuel Stabilizer: Adding a fuel stabilizer extends fuel life and prevents deposits. Always mix stabilizer with gasoline in an approved container before fueling. Run the generator for five minutes after fueling to treat the system.

Filling the Fuel Tank

  1. Turn the generator OFF and allow it to cool for at least two minutes before fueling.
  2. Place the generator on level ground in a well-ventilated area.
  3. Clean the area around the fuel cap and remove it slowly.
  4. Fill the tank slowly with recommended fuel, DO NOT overfill. Fill only to the red maximum fill ring on the fuel screen filter.
  5. Install the fuel cap.

NOTICE: Fuel can damage paint and plastic. Use caution when filling. Damage from spilled fuel is not covered under warranty.

NOTICE: Clean the fuel screen filter of debris before and after each fueling.

Operation

Generator Location

? DANGER: Using a generator indoors CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES due to carbon monoxide. NEVER use inside a home or garage. Only use OUTSIDE and far away from windows, doors, and vents. DO NOT operate in any enclosed building or compartment.

? DANGER: Electrocution hazard. NEVER use in wet or damp locations. Protect from rain, snow, water spray, or standing water. Moisture or ice can cause short circuits.

? Fire Hazard: Operate on a solid, level surface. Avoid loose material like sand or grass clippings that can be ingested. Allow 30 minutes for cooling before transport or storage. Maintain 5 ft. (1.5 m) clearance from combustible material. DO NOT operate in the back of vehicles, under stairs, or near walls that impede cooling.

? Asphyxiation Hazard: Place in a well-ventilated area. DO NOT place near vents or intakes where exhaust fumes could be drawn into occupied spaces. Consider wind and air currents.

Grounding

⚠️ WARNING: Failure to properly ground the generator can result in electric shock.

The generator has a floating neutral. The ground terminal connects to the frame and receptacle ground pins. Electrical devices requiring a grounded receptacle pin may not function properly. If using only the generator's mounted receptacles with cord and plug equipment, grounding is not required by the National Electric Code. However, other uses may require grounding. Consult a qualified electrician or local agency for applicable codes before using the ground terminal.

NOTICE: Only use grounded 3-prong extension cords, tools, and appliances, or double-insulated tools and appliances.

High Altitude Operation

Engine power decreases approximately 3.5% for every 1,000 feet of altitude above sea level. High altitude adjustment is required for operation above 2,000 ft. (762 m). Operation without adjustment will cause decreased performance, increased fuel consumption, and increased emissions. DO NOT operate at altitudes below 2,000 ft. (762 m) with the high altitude kit installed, as engine damage may occur. (High Altitude Carburetor Kit Part# 518965)

Voltage Selector Switch

The 120V/240V selector switch allows for higher amperage for demanding applications. It switches the generator's dual 120V AC windings to produce 120V or 240V. For a 240V appliance connected to the L14-30R receptacle, the switch must be in the “240V” position. The 120V outlets will not function when the switch is in the 240V position.

⚠️ WARNING: Only change the Voltage Selector Switch with the generator OFF. DO NOT switch voltage while the generator is running or powering appliances.

Break-in Period

For proper break-in, DO NOT exceed 50% of rated running watts (2650 watts) during the first five hours. Vary the load occasionally to allow stator windings to heat and cool and help seat piston rings.

Before Starting the Generator

Verify:

? DANGER: DO NOT move or tip the generator during operation.

Starting the Engine

  1. Verify fuel in the gas tank.
  2. Turn the fuel selector switch to gasoline operation.
  3. Turn the fuel tank valve to the ON position.
  4. Push the Run/Stop switch to the Run position.
  5. Firmly grasp and pull the recoil handle slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly.
  6. After starting, allow the engine to run for several seconds, then move the Choke lever to the fully OFF position.

Stopping the Engine

  1. Turn off and unplug all connected electrical loads.
  2. Let the generator run with no load for several minutes to stabilize internal temperatures.
  3. Push the Battery switch to the OFF position.

Note: For infrequent use, turn the fuel tank valve to OFF to drain residual fuel from the carburetor float bowl. The engine will stop when fuel is exhausted.

Frequency of Use

For infrequent or intermittent use (more than one month between uses), refer to the Storage section for information on fuel deterioration.

AC Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers automatically switch OFF during a short circuit or overload. If a breaker trips, check the appliance and ensure it does not exceed the receptacle's rated load capacity before resetting the breaker.

Generator Capacity

NOTICE: DO NOT overload the generator. Exceeding capacity can damage the generator or connected devices. Ensure the generator can supply enough continuous (running) and surge (starting) watts for all items used simultaneously.

Calculate total running watts and add the highest surge watts needed for starting electric motors. Refer to the wattage reference chart for estimates.

Power Management

To prolong generator and device life, add electrical loads sequentially:

  1. Start the engine with nothing connected.
  2. Plug in and turn on the first load (preferably the largest).
  3. Allow generator output to stabilize.
  4. Plug in and turn on the next load.
  5. Allow stabilization.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for additional loads.

Extension Cords

⚠️ WARNING: Extension cords running indoors increase carbon monoxide poisoning risk. ALWAYS use battery-powered carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure generator is in an open, outdoor area, away from occupied spaces with exhaust pointed away.

⚠️ WARNING: NEVER use worn or damaged extension cords. They can overheat, arc, and cause injury.

Before connecting: Use grounded 3-prong cords, tools, and appliances, or double-insulated items. Ensure tools/appliances are in good working order. Verify electrical ratings do not exceed generator or receptacle capacity.

Transporting

⚠️ CAUTION: Weight hazard. Always have assistance when lifting. Allow generator to cool for 30 minutes before transporting. Replace protective covers. Use the generator's frame for lifting or securing. Keep the unit level during transport; drain fuel or run the engine until the tank is empty if possible.

Maintenance

⚠️ CAUTION: Fire hazard. DO NOT up-end or place the generator on its side. Fuel or oil leaks can damage the unit.

⚠️ WARNING: Disconnect the spark plug boot before performing maintenance to prevent accidental start-up.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance improves performance and extends service life. Follow hourly or calendar intervals, whichever comes first. More frequent service is needed for adverse conditions.

Air Filter Maintenance

Clean the air filter every 50 hours or six months (more often in dusty environments).

  1. Place generator on a level surface and let the engine cool.
  2. Release clips and remove the air filter cover.
  3. Clean the air filter with compressed air. Replace if damaged.
  4. Ensure the air filter and rubber cap are correctly installed. Secure the air filter cover.

Engine Oil Level Check

NOTICE: Always use the specified engine oil. Failure to do so can cause accelerated wear or shorten engine life. Change oil more frequently in dusty conditions or extreme heat. Ambient temperature affects oil performance.

Check oil level before each use or every 8 hours of operation.

  1. Place generator on a level surface and let the engine cool.
  2. Clean around the oil dipstick with a damp rag.
  3. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.
  4. Insert the dipstick into the oil filler neck (do not screw it in). Verify the oil level is between the low (L) and high (H) marks.
  5. If low, add oil incrementally and recheck. DO NOT overfill. If over the H mark, drain oil to the full mark.
  6. Replace the oil dipstick and hand-tighten.

Engine Oil Change

Change oil while the engine is still warm from operation. Change more frequently in dusty conditions or extreme heat.

  1. Place generator on a level surface and let the engine cool.
  2. Clean around the oil dipstick with a damp rag. Remove and wipe the dipstick clean.
  3. Place an oil pan under the oil drain bolt.
  4. Using a 10mm wrench, remove the oil drain bolt and allow oil to drain.
  5. Install the oil drain bolt and tighten securely. A new crush washer is recommended.
  6. Slowly pour oil into the oil filler neck until the level is between the L and H marks on the dipstick. Stop frequently to check. DO NOT overfill. Maximum oil capacity: 0.74 Quart (0.7 Liter).
  7. Install the oil dipstick and hand-tighten.

NOTICE: Dispose of hazardous materials properly according to EPA guidelines and local authorities.

Spark Plug Maintenance

Inspect and clean the spark plug every 100 hours or six months. Replace after 300 hours or yearly.

NOTICE: ALWAYS use a Westinghouse OEM or compatible non-resistor-type spark plug. Resistor-type plugs can cause rough idling or misfires.

  1. Place generator on a level surface and let the engine cool.
  2. Remove the spark plug boot by pulling it directly away from the engine.
  3. Clean the area around the spark plug.
  4. Remove the spark plug with the included socket wrench. Avoid side loading the plug.
  5. Inspect the spark plug. Replace if electrodes are pitted, burned, or the insulator is cracked. Use only a recommended replacement.
  6. Measure the spark plug electrode gap (0.024 – 0.032 in. / 0.60 – 0.80 mm). Adjust by carefully bending the side electrode if necessary.
  7. Carefully install the spark plug finger tight, then tighten an additional 3/8 to 1/2 turn with the wrench.
  8. Attach the spark plug boot.

Spark Arrestor Service

Allow the muffler to cool completely before servicing the spark arrestor. Check and clean it every 100 hours or six months. Failure to clean degrades engine performance.

  1. Place generator on a level surface.
  2. Slide a screwdriver into the side slot and remove the screw holding the clamp (A) on the spark arrestor. Pull out the assembly.
  3. Carefully remove carbon deposits from the spark arrestor screen with a wire brush. Ensure the arrestor is free of breaks and tears; replace if damaged.
  4. Reinstall the spark arrestor.

Storage

Proper storage preparation ensures trouble-free operation and longevity.

NOTICE: Gasoline stored for as little as 30 days can deteriorate, causing gum and varnish buildup that can restrict fuel flow and prevent starting. Fuel stabilizer significantly increases storage life.

Short Term Storage

Long Term Storage

For storage of two to six months, drain the float bowl to prevent gum and varnish buildup in the carburetor.

Draining the Fuel Tank

For storage longer than six months, drain the fuel tank to prevent fuel separation and deposits.

  1. Unscrew the fuel tank cap. Remove the fuel screen filter.
  2. Using a gasoline hand pump, siphon fuel into an approved container. DO NOT use an electric pump.
  3. Reinstall the fuel screen filter and fuel tank cap.
  4. Start the generator and let it run until the engine stops.
  5. Push the Run/Stop switch to Stop.
  6. Remove the spark plug.
  7. Put a teaspoon of engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the recoil handle until resistance is felt (piston at top dead center, valves closed). This helps prevent internal corrosion. Return the handle gently.
  8. Reinstall the spark plug. Leave the spark plug boot disconnected.

Draining the Float Bowl

  1. Turn the fuel tank valve to the OFF position.
  2. Locate the drain screw on the bottom of the carburetor float bowl.
  3. Place a gasoline container under the drain screw to catch drained fuel.
  4. Loosen the float bowl drain screw and allow fuel to drain. Tighten the screw.

Fuel Valve Maintenance

The fuel valve requires no regular servicing if maintained with fresh, clean fuel. Perform maintenance if fuel-related troubleshooting is needed.

  1. Allow the generator to cool completely.
  2. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position.
  3. Remove the sediment cup, o-ring, and screen from the fuel valve.
  4. Wash these components in a nonflammable solvent and dry thoroughly.
  5. Reinstall the screen and o-ring into the fuel valve, then install the sediment cup securely.
  6. Turn the fuel valve to the ON position and check for leaks. Replace the fuel valve if any leaks occur.

Valve Clearance

NOTICE: Check and adjust valve clearance when the engine is cold.

  1. Remove the rocker arm cover and gasket. Replace the gasket if torn or damaged.
  2. Remove the spark plug to allow easier engine rotation.
  3. Rotate the engine to top dead center (TDC) by slowly pulling the recoil handle. Observe through the spark plug hole; the piston should be at the top with both valves closed.
  4. Both rocker arms should be loose at TDC on the compression stroke. If not, rotate the engine 360°.
  5. Insert a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and valve stem to measure clearance.

  1. If adjustment is needed, hold the rocker arm pivot and loosen the pivot adjusting nut.
  2. Turn the rocker arm pivot to achieve the specified clearance. Hold the pivot and re-tighten the adjusting nut to the specified torque: 106 inch-pound (12 N·m).
  3. Repeat for the other valve.
  4. Install the gasket, rocker arm cover, and spark plug.

Troubleshooting
