- Do not operate a chainsaw in a tree unless specifically trained.
Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback
Kickback occurs when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood closes in and pinches the saw chain. Tip contact can cause a sudden reverse reaction, kicking the guide bar up and back towards the operator. Pinching the chain can push the bar rapidly back towards the operator. These reactions can cause loss of control and serious injury.
Prevention:
- Maintain a firm grip with both hands, encircling the handles, and position your body to resist kickback forces.
- Do not overreach and do not cut above shoulder height.
- Use only manufacturer-specified replacement guide bars and saw chains.
- Follow sharpening and maintenance instructions; decreasing depth gauge height can increase kickback.
Safety Devices on the Product
- Do not use a product with damaged or malfunctioning safety devices.
- Regularly check safety devices. Refer to Maintenance section.
- Contact a Husqvarna servicing dealer if safety devices are damaged or not operating correctly.
Functions of the User Interface
The user interface includes the start/stop button, SavE button, battery status, and warning indicator. The warning indicator flashes if the chain brake is engaged or if there is a risk of overload. Overload protection stops the product until the temperature decreases. A solid warning light indicates a need to contact a servicing dealer.
The Automatic Stop Function
The product stops automatically if not used for 3 minutes.
Chain Brake and Front Hand Guard
The chain brake stops the saw chain during kickback. It decreases accident risk, but operator vigilance is key.
- The chain brake engages manually (pushing the front hand guard forward) or automatically via inertia release.
- Kickback can be sudden and intense; most do not engage the brake. Hold handles tightly during kickback.
- The front hand guard also protects your hand if you let go of the front handle.
- In the felling position, the chain brake can only be engaged by inertia release.
Power Trigger Lockout
Prevents accidental operation of the power trigger. Push the lockout forward and then against the handle to release the trigger.
Chain Catcher
Catches the saw chain if it breaks or comes loose. Correct chain tension and maintenance reduce this risk.
Right Hand Guard
Protects your hand if the saw chain breaks or comes loose and prevents interference from branches.

Kickback Information
Kickback can cause serious injury or death. Understand causes and prevention.
Kickback occurs when the kickback zone of the guide bar touches an object or wood closes in and pinches the chain. This can cause a sudden reverse reaction, throwing the product towards the operator.
- Kickback only occurs if the kickback zone touches an object. Do not let it touch.
- A smaller bar tip radius decreases kickback force.
- Use a low kickback saw chain.
- No saw chain fully prevents kickback; always obey instructions.
Common Questions About Kickback
- Hand engagement: The hand may not always engage the chain brake during kickback, as sufficient force is needed. Hold handles firmly with both hands.
- Inertia release: The inertia release mechanism must operate correctly and requires sufficient kickback force to engage.
- Protection: The chain brake must operate correctly and be engaged during kickback to stop the chain. It may not stop the chain before it hits you if you are too close.
Only you and correct working technique can prevent kickbacks.
To start the product
- Check power trigger and lockout.
- Engage the chain brake.
- Insert the battery into the battery holder until it clicks.
- Push the start/stop button until the green LED comes on.
To use the SavE function
The SavE function decreases chain speed and power.
- Press the SavE button; the green LED lights up.
- Press again to disconnect; the green LED goes off.
To stop the product
- Press the start/stop button until the green LED goes off.
- Press battery release buttons and remove the battery to prevent accidental start.
Pull stroke and push stroke
Cutting can be done with the bottom (pull stroke) or top (push stroke) of the guide bar.
- Pull stroke: Better control, kickback zone position is away from operator.
- Push stroke: Saw chain pushes product towards operator.
If the saw chain gets caught, the product can be pushed at you. Hold tightly and prevent kickback zone contact.
To use the cutting technique
Use full power when cutting and reduce to idle after each cut. Do not let the motor operate too long without load.
- Place the trunk on a saw horse or runners.
- Remove cut pieces from the work area.
To use the spiked bumper
- Push the spiked bumper into the trunk.
- Apply full power and rotate the product, keeping the bumper against the trunk to assist cutting.
To cut a trunk on the ground
- Cut on the pull stroke, keeping full power. Be prepared for sudden accidents. Ensure the saw chain does not touch the ground when completing the cut.
- Cut approximately halfway, then stop. Turn the trunk and cut from the opposite side.
To cut a trunk that has support on one end
Ensure the trunk does not break during cutting.
- Cut on the push stroke approximately halfway through the trunk.
- Cut through the remaining part on the pull stroke until the two kerfs meet.
To cut a trunk that has support on two ends
Ensure the saw chain does not get caught in the trunk.
- Cut on the pull stroke approximately halfway through the trunk.
- Cut the remaining part on the push stroke to complete the cut.
If the saw chain gets caught, stop the motor. Use a lever to open the kerf and remove the product. Do not pull by hand.
To use the limbing technique
For thick branches, use the cutting technique. WARNING: High accident risk when limbing. Refer to Kickback Information.
- Cut limbs one by one. Be careful with small limbs; do not cut bushes or many small limbs at once.
- Cut smaller branches before the limb near the trunk.
- Remove limbs on the right, top, and left sides of the trunk, using appropriate cutting techniques.
To use the tree felling technique
Experience is required for felling trees. Consider training.
- Keep a safe distance: Ensure people are at least 2.5 tree lengths away. Ensure no one is in the danger zone before or during felling.
- Calculate felling direction: Examine natural fall direction, wind, branches, snow load, and obstacles. Check for rot or dead branches. Do not fell onto another standing tree.
- Clear trunk and prepare retreat path: Cut branches up to shoulder height. Remove undergrowth and debris. Ensure a clear retreat path at approximately 135 degrees away from the felling direction.
- Felling hinge: Crucial for controlling felling direction. Must be uniform and at least 10% of the tree diameter.
- Directional cuts: Make two cuts (top and bottom) at a 45° angle, meeting at 1/4 of the tree diameter. Ensure the directional cut line is horizontal.
- Safe corner method: Make the felling cut slightly above the directional cut. Use a bore cut for the hinge width, then cut on the pull stroke. For trees wider than the bar, make a bore cut to complete hinge width, cut 3/4, pull back, then cut remaining to form a safe corner. For trees narrower than the bar, bore cut 3/5, cut remaining, then cut from the other side to complete the hinge, and cut on push stroke to complete the corner.
- Wedge: Insert a wedge into the kerf from behind.
- Felling: Cut off the corner to make the tree fall. If it doesn't fall, hit the wedge. When the tree starts to fall, use the retreat path.
To free a trapped tree
Very dangerous; high accident risk. Keep out of risk zone. Use winches (tractor-mounted or portable).
To cut trees and branches that are in tension
- Identify tension side and point of maximum tension.
- Determine the safest procedure to release tension; a winch may be necessary.
- Position yourself safely away from the branch's path.
- Make cuts to decrease tension at or near the point of maximum tension.
- Do not cut straight through a tensioned tree/branch.
- If cutting across, make 2-3 cuts 1 inch apart and 2 inches deep. Continue cutting until tension is released.
- Cut from the opposite side of the bend after tension is released.
