Product Description

About the Manufacturer

The Hilti Group is a global leader in construction and energy industries, providing technologically advanced products, systems, and services. With approximately 33,000 employees across over 120 countries, Hilti is known for its direct customer relationships, quality, and innovation. The company reported annual sales exceeding CHF 6.3 billion in 2022 and is headquartered in Schaan, Liechtenstein, where it was founded in 1941. The Hilti Group's purpose is to improve construction through a passionate, inclusive team and a performance-oriented culture.

Product Details

The HIT-Z is an ultimate-performance anchor rod for injectable hybrid anchors (carbon steel) designed for demanding applications. Key features include:

  • Suitable for very high loads in cracked and uncracked concrete, including seismic applications, meeting ICC-ES and ETA C2 approvals.
  • No hole cleaning required (above 5°C / 41°F) when used with HIT-HY 200.
  • Offers a more reliable and productive solution by potentially eliminating the hole cleaning process.
  • Features variable depth of embedment for full anchor capacity utilization.
  • Includes head marking for easy verification of rod length post-installation.

The product is made from 100% basic oxygen furnace (BOF) produced steel with 20% recycled material content. This includes approximately 30% pre-consumer recycled material (6% of steel components) and 70% post-consumer recycled material (14% of steel components).

Applications

  • Fastenings in cracked and uncracked concrete using Hilti HIT-HY 200.
  • Seismic anchoring (e.g., bracing of reinforced concrete buildings).
  • Anchoring structural steel connections (e.g., steel columns, beams).
  • Anchoring secondary steel structures (e.g., racking, guard rails, sound barriers).

Product Life-Cycle

System Boundary

This EPD covers the following life-cycle modules:

  • Product Stage: Raw materials (A1), Transport (A2), Manufacturing (A3)
  • Assembly Stage: Transport (A4), Installation (A5)
  • Use Stage: Use (B1), Maintenance (B2-B7) - Impacts considered negligible.
  • End of Life Stage: Deconstruction/demolition (C1), Transport (C2), Waste processing (C3), Disposal (C4)
  • Beyond the system boundaries: Recycling (D)

Manufacturing and Packaging (A1-A3)

This stage covers the manufacturing of raw materials, packaging, and ancillary materials. It includes fuel use by machines and waste handling during production. Material losses during manufacturing and electricity transmission are also considered. Electricity used is sourced from green certificates (wind energy). Packaging is typically a cardboard box. Transport of raw materials and packaging uses EURO 5 lorries (>32 metric ton) over distances of 600-670 km. A 1% production loss is accounted for.

Transport and Installation (A4-A5)

Module A4 covers transportation from the factory to the construction site, involving road transport (908 km by EURO 5 lorry) and sea transport (4325 km by container ship). Module A5 covers installation, with no material loss or additional materials/energy required. End-of-life assumptions for installation waste include 83% recycled, 8% incinerated, and 9% landfilled. Transport of A5 waste is via road (50 km by EURO 5 lorry).

Product Use and Maintenance (B1-B7)

Emissions due to installation are considered negligible, as installation is performed with hand tools for a short duration. The product is embedded in the building structure and requires no routine maintenance. Air, soil, and water impacts during the use phase were not studied.

Product End of Life (C1-C4, D)

In a global average scenario, 85% of the steel is assumed to be recycled, with the remaining 15% sent to landfill. Actual recyclability may vary by region.

Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process involves the following steps:

  • Steel wire is processed through Extrusion.
  • The extruded material undergoes Helical rolling.
  • Following rolling, the product is Galvanized/Coated.
  • Finally, the product is Packaged for distribution.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Cut-off Criteria

The study includes all major raw material and energy consumption and does not exclude any modules or processes mandatory in the reference standard or PCR. Neglected unit processes are less than 1% of total mass/energy flows, and module-specific neglected flows do not exceed 5% of energy or mass. Excluded are capital equipment production, construction activities, infrastructure, maintenance, personnel-related activities, and company management/sales energy/water use.

Validation of Data

Data collection used site-specific information. Upstream calculations relied on generic data from the bibliography. The analysis was performed using One Click LCA EPD Generator with the 'Cut-Off, EN 15804+A2' allocation method and relevant characterization factors.

Allocation, Estimates and Assumptions

Allocations were performed as per reference standards and PCR. Data types and their allocation methods are detailed in the original document. For example, raw materials and packaging material had no allocation, while ancillary materials and manufacturing energy/waste were allocated by mass or volume.

Product & Manufacturing Sites Grouping

The EPD is product and factory specific. No grouping was applied.

LCA Software and Bibliography

This EPD was created using One Click LCA EPD Generator, adhering to ISO 14040/14044 standards. It utilizes Ecoinvent v3.10.1 and One Click LCA databases. Key references include:
